Suppose I know this guy, which for some reason have a "system" pop up every now and then, asking him if he want to registrer and get windows genuine. He is really tired of it, because when he plays a game online is crashes when the popup comes.

Why is it there? And what can be done about it?

Thanks in advance.

Windows was already on the computer from the store.

Then there should be no problem activating it. Just tell your friend to d/l the update and let it run.

If you click on it, it takes you the the windows website where you can set it to stop popping up.

Wild guess: since it's related to Windows Update, check the settings for that in Control Panel. Maybe your friend has set it to automatically download and install updates and somewhere in the process of doing this it asks him to register.

I've got the same thing from windows update. Choose not to install it and check the box that says do not suggest to install this again. I read the eula of that dang update and I don't want to install it. If we are talking about the "Windows genuine advantage notification" that is.

Microsoft snuck in Windows Genuine Advantage as a default "critical update". No one noticed. Kind of scary, seeing as how the typical user has nothing to gain and much to lose by installing it (sometimes genuine copies get false-positived as non-genuine). Anyways, at least they let you avoid it if you specifically tell them not to install it.

The best way to avoid it is to have Windows Update have you review updates before installing, and when it comes up, you can opt to not install it and never ask you about it again.

Microsoft has a page about killing it.

Scary as the typical user doesn't check what the windows suggests them to install. It's really easy to sneak it in among the security patches.
