i want to get a military academy going...but in order to do that..they say i must have had a victorious army....so..

in order to build an army to go fight and win...i need a hero..

i have bunch of elite units (all air, ground, and sea) and i just cant get a single one of them to achieve hero status no matter how many fights i get them into...

now why is that...is there someone else that have this problem?

thx

1)it's easier to achieve great leader status by being the aggressor, in my experience...
2)I'm not sure if all units could turn great leader or just the conscripts and horsemen.
3) use a militarist civ. It helps. :king:

I can't confirm this, but unit seem more often be premoted and produce leaders when they win a fight against a superior unit..

I hear some people are having trouble, but I've got a leader in every game I've played. (Romans, Greeks and Japanese)
Two with the Japanese! Wish I knew what I was doing that works...

I guess the only advice I have is keep those elite units alive.

In current game, the Egytians attacked my horsemen with swordsmen. My horsemen pushed them back.

I was granted a hero.

But its still the Egyptian's turn.

They attack again. And this time, they kill my horsemen. And thus my hero.

Moral of the story.

Kill the egyptians.

When you get a Hero......:king:
SAVE!!!!!!!! :p

LOL WankersRevenge. :)

I myself have never gotten a hero and I've actually fought a lot. It's probably because my elite units die really often before they really see any action.

I think I read somewhere that an elite unit has a 1/16 chance of becoming a hero (1/12 with heroic epic) whenever it fights a battle. I dunno, if this is true, but I have 2 heros as the Japanese in the middle ages

I played one game as the Chinese and was put on my own islands away from the rest of the civs. As a result my forces didn't get much combat experience until the end of the game. My first leader came in 1973!

My next (and current) game as the Romans has involved more fighting (I decided that I needed to wipe out the nearest civ to give my people more room to grow:) ). In that game I was able to get a great leader in about 800 AD. However its now the 1800s and I have yet to get another one:( . Fortunately the first one is really all you need because after forming a victorious army, you can build the Military Academy and produce armies without a great leader. Still, I wouldn't mind seeing a few more great leaders so that I can use them to rush production of great wonders.

I think that its just an odds thing. I read somewhere that the chances are something like 1 in 16 that when an elite unit wins a battle it will produce a leader. After you get "Heroic Epic" it goes to 1 in 12. Must have been it the strategy guide.

I have gotten a great leader in nearly every game I've played.

My current game I am playing as the Greeks. I have gotten TWO great leaders.

The only problem is, I'm at war with ten different civs on a huge map and currently six of them are stomping all over my empire ripping everything up, it's pissing me off to no extent that they keep tearing up the roads, but I can't do anything about it because if my hoplights leave the city they will be quickly slaughtered.

city walls, three hoplights(1/3/1) most are now elite.

YOU WILL NOT TAKE THAT CITY PERIOD.

Unless you have something that attacks on at least a 6 you're not going to get thru the cities. So I've managed to turtle it up, and as they pound on my walls I've gotten two great leaders, each within a turn of each other. I'm almost ready to go on the offense with my new Hoplight army. Just need some archers and some more D.

I also have no strategic resources, and no luxury resources. I'm strictly a aggrarian country. I was attacked I think because I built the Collosus. I will not surrender. I will not give up. I WILL PREVAIL! I WILL NOT FALTER. Every step into Greek territory shall be paid for with the blood of thousands upon thousands of soldiers!

Also I have been reading a Sun Tzu's: Manual for War. So I think I've got a pretty good plan when I finally go ahead on it. First, I isolate the agressors, I get their neighbors to take advantage of their new found weaknesses. Then, while their soft underbelly is being ripped apart, I cut thru the front lines like a eagle striking its prey.
OK I'm officially rambling! Back to civ3 for me!
I'm just glad they haven't got any siege engines out to my cities!

I got my first hero today also and i'll be damned if he was not killed before I could use him.

I am not saying that I put him off to use him... I got attacked by a unit and got a herro, then before it was my turn, I got socked by three more units... taht sexy whore hit two of them off but feel to the third... and so I didnt even get to use him :(

Just remember, with a hero.

Once you build an army, you can't change the makeup of the army. Don't be afraid to hold the leader for a bit .. especially if you are close to a new tech like gunpowder.
