Getting better at C3C but how?!

Hello everyone,

I'm ionize a casual Civ3 player. I didn't play C3C for a long time and I want to play some more games now and I want to get beyond Regent. My problem in the past was that I'd start a few games, and I'd also read the story and SG threads as well as strategy stuff.

After that I always wanted to try all of the learnt at once. This way I often quit playing out of frustration as nothing was working for me. So I'm still awful at Civ3.

I had the idea of starting a game with my personal settings and keep turn-logs like in the SGs and hope for some feedback (would provide saves and screens as well). Apart from that I'm at a loss. Just reading won't help me and trying on my own (without advice and criticism) is no good as well imo.

So is a game-log like this allowed? And if so, where? I would really like to get feedback on this.

People definitely have done things like that before, so from all indications I can tell it does come as allowed, if not positively encouraged. Doing this might fit better in the "Strategy and Tips" section, but since you have opened this thread already, I think doing such right here will work best.

Please tell us your settings, and post saves. Common advice, which many players seeking advice seem to have trouble with, comes as to train at least enough workers to develop any worked tiles (by citizens in the city center screen) in your core. Best of success!

My suggestion would be to post in the "Strategy" forum. And the guys here are really good at offering advice and critique... in the interest of gaining skills.

Thanks for your replay Spoonwood. As for your advice: I try to match my city count with my worker count (no slaves included).

Keep an eye on the SG section. Training Day Games open up now and again, and IMO, they're a fantastic tool. In my sig, you'll also see a link to an Archive of Training Day Games. Some of those might be worth reading.

I did that many years ago, Chieftain to Monarch: Game Two, and for the same reason. Not only do you get more eyes looking at it, but by playing a set number of turns at a time, it helps you to set short term goals and really think about what you are doing.

Go for it, you'll learn alot!

I'm only at Regent myself, so certainly wouldn't question the advice of higher players. At the same time, reading about newcomers problems mastering the game leads to this; This is not a peaceful game. You must have an attitude from day 1 that you will rule. Peace is fine only as long as it serves you. And you never attack until you're sure of a "quick" win. Keep in mind that even your best ally is ultimately your worst enemy. Don't hesitate to be dastardly when the moment calls for it. I hope this helps.

Or, to sum it up, don't be afraid of those AI units (they're pretty stupid but can be sneaky) Choose your battles wisely.

Well, ionize, I happen to know that someone just bowed out of a current TDG: Asterix the Gaul. I know this because I'm the one who bowed out. I hope Aabra01 proves instructive. It certainly was for me.

I played my Monarch game so much that I didn't read any more of the TDG stuff. But will continue soon. Thanks for the hint on the Asterix the Gaul game, I will look into it.
