Getting religion

Religion seems to be fairly well balanced, IMHO. There are benefits and drawbacks to it, just like anyother part of the game, and it makes the game more true to life.
Well said! Religion dovetails into diplomacy and if you don't get the hang of diplo then your gameplay will be limited. As for Izzy, I rejoice when she's in a game. Zooming in on the slap-attacks of her Conquistadors (Usually against units that are a couple of techs ahead.) provides some welcome comedy relief.

I recently had an odd game WRT religion not spreading. I was on a continent with 5 civs. Two were Confucian and 3 were Buddhist. I had open borders with the religion founders for most of the game. Religion never autospread to any of my cities, and neither civ sent missionaries until right when I started teching Liberalism, when they both sent missionaries almost simultaneously. Needless to say, I said "screw you" when the game asked if I wanted to convert, and switched to Free Religion as soon as possible.

Actually, FR gives +1 :) per religion present in the city but you do not have a state religion. The other religious civics only give +1 :) if your state religion is present in the city. So FR can allow for more happiness in the city than having a state religion if you have multiple religions in your cities.

Yes, I know that, but you (and others) seem to be intentionally missing my point. If none of your cities has any religion in it whatsoever, then it stands to reason that none of your cities will gain a :) for each religion present in those cities - they have NO religion at all. None. Nada. Naught. Zero. Zip. Zilch. None of them gain a :) for your state religion, since you cannot have one. Read that part again, please: You CANNOT have a state religion if you do not have a religion established in any of your cities. The game will not allow it. And none of them can gain a :) for each additional religion since if you don't have a single city with at least one religion in it, then you certainly don't have any cities with more then one religion in them.

Giving advice on civics based on religion is a moot point, since the question at hand is: How do you get *any* religion into your civ. Not what to do with them once they are established.

The question of how to increase your chances of getting a religion spread into your empire has been very suitably answered. Thanks.
