Getting the Most out of Religions

When I first read about the concept of reliogions in Civ, I thought it was a great idea. But after months of playing I feel that they have not tapped their potential. There are probably already some mods that include some of these things, but if I had any modding knowledge I would combine them all and make a good Religious Wars mod.

First of all, there is just about every victory type except religious. Why not have a religious victory. Imagine building Crusaders or Jihadist and stamping out all the other religions in the game, making yours supreme. It would be a kind of half war between missionaries and crusaders. Once you got 75% of the world converted, you win a religious victory.

Another idea I have read is having some type of civic options were you could determine whether your religion was fundementalist, militeristic, etc. That could be a cool way to tweak things a bit further. Each option woudl have pluses and minuses.

And just like there are civil wars, why cannot we lower the number of starting religions (and or make it more likely for the starting ones to die out and be replaced) and have religious splits--especially when two countries of the same religion hate each other. Budhism can spring from Hinduhism, Christianity from Judiasm, etc.

I have always wanted 'the will of the people' to play some part of civ as well. (Kind of like how you get unhappiness for no emancipation and such). You could have unhappiness when you are of no religion, or maybe if you had non-state religions creeping in that could make people unhappy sometimes.

And prehaps most on a could do list...

Maybe a way to make it so that each religion was 'neutral' but still different would be to have it so that when the religion was founded its traits were picked as well by that civ. You could choose a preferred religious civic that gave some small bonus when members of that religion had that civic; choose a small reward for having the religion in the first place (focus on honesty causes 5% more taxes to be collected) and some type of penalty (dang pacifist make unhappiness when you declare war).

Any thoughts and suggestions as well as additional ideas would be appreciated. Then maybe some day I will have the time to invest to figure out how, or someone that can could make a mod for this type of thing.

Well, unhappiness is very well expressed in Civ, in that a state religion automatically gives +1 :) in every city. Religious buildings also build extra happiness if they're of state religions. Not to mention, you get diplomatic bonuses for similar religions to your opponents.

Religion is a very sensitive issue. I'm surprised they even put it in. And in the manual there is a bold text stressing out just that.

Though I agree on the will of the people.
Maybe if you start a war then war weariness should increase as opposed to when war is declared on you - the people fight for their nation!

Yes and by the looks of it they want to keep it an aesthetic feature of the game. Any more and the game could get in trouble. Remember the Danish cartoons? :mischief:

Yep, I remember the Danish cartoons.
And also see what is happening in the middle east.
There is war weariness and civilian casulties.
The Israeli army and Hezbollah fighters are getting expreience points.
But unlike a computer game, you can't reload or start all over again.
Once the game is over - IT'S OVER!
