how does this work? Do the city retain its culture? does it get we yearn to join or motherland penalty? Or can you just gift away a city to build a granary by an expansive leader then gift back to whip in a courhouse as organized?

Not the best person to answer as I never do it but I guess:

Does the city retain its culture?
- No each civ builds up their own culture - it will get it back though once its yours again

does it get we yearn to join or motherland penalty
- Probably for the reason above

Or can you just gift away a city to build a granary by an expansive leader then gift back to whip in a courhouse as organized?
- Yes but if it works its an exploit. Also you are likely to lose cultural buildings and possibly others in the swap. So you may lose the courthouse you just buiilt

Oh i forgot to mention. This was mostly ment for team play. Does allied culture count the same as enemy culture for these purposes? Or is it still like you just captured a city from them?

Im not sure why you would want to do this. Doesn't gifting the city cause anarchy for the city? And if so, then thats lost turns flipping back and forth just to build specific buildings.

IT does? I have no clue how gifting cities work much less how gifting cities inside a team work. Thats what i want to know. If it does indeed cause anarchy then it is ofc a bad idea, i kinda doubt that though. Noone knows?

oyzar I'm pretty sure it does, but you could always go online and try it out, and post the answer.

me and my roommates play alot of team games and found that

-giving the city to a teammate takes all culture away
-didn't notice any lost buildings but i guess its possible
-building prod bonuses work
-you can't build a unique building and give it back (it will revert to the reg)

i can't remember if the culture points came back when we returned them, i guess that would be a huge plus but all in all it wasn't worth the effort anyway

In teamplay, if I take a city nearer an ally, sometimes we gift it to them. I once gifted a city to an AI ally (the player had quit) because I could not stand the economy especially so far from home, but wanted pyramids. We 2 (was an inland 3v3) won.

Also, it happened to me the other day. I had a civ choked at 1 city in a 3v3, and suddenly he had a 2nd city and axemen. Apparently, a teamate donated a city to him (no way any unit entered his cap fat cross) and began gifting him axes at that city. This divided their workload, and I got overrun (lost 1 of my 2 cities after burning his 3rd city) but rebuilt and held. Fortunately, our 2man effort on the other front completely overran them.
