Gifting units to city states broken

I was gifting the City States units throughout the game with no problem. But when I moved deeper into the tech tree, the gifting of units to City States was not working.

I do not know when it exactly occurred but I was gifting battleships and other advance units and the CIV STATES receiving of gifts stop functioning. As a matter of fact, on one occasion that I was aware of, the turn I clicked to gift a City State a unit, 'poof' one of its units diappeared!!

This happened over two dozen times (I am kiiling the AI so that I can experiment with late game techs) so there is no way I am mistaken in my observation.

BTW, Future Tech sucks. I thought it was going to do something cool, it just gives you points.

BTW (2) You cannot achieve a SpaceShip Victory if you win with United Nations and keep playing. The last piece of the SpachShip (engine) just sits in your capital. So I never got to see what a Space Victory looked like.

1. Future tech has never done anything cool. If you're getting to future tech before you win the game, you're either utterly crap, or delaying victory for whatever reason (same goes for disabling victory conditions)

2. You've already won. You don't get to see any other victory conditions. YOU'VE WON

In civ4, each future tech gives you score, happiness and health. Since civ5 done away health, I think it should give excess happiness in addition to score.

I guess the only time that you would ever use Future Tech is if you were going for a Time victory and that's it, but really why would you do that?:undecide:

i'm not totally sure, but i would imagine city states have military upkeep just like civs, and if they spend all their money, they have to disband units.

Because you fumbled your strategy to have a more conventional victory, making this the only way to achieve victory, I guess... I did it once when I didn't know the game very well.

On the other hand, I also scored my very first victory on Civ V on the diplomatic front as I didn't plan well enough for anything else but pumping lots of gold to buy all the city-states.

If you gift through the diplomatic screen, then don't gift more than 3 units at a time and wait for them to appear before you gift more. They take a few turns to appear in a CS, and anything more than 3/turn tend to dissappear forever. It's really dumb and I think it's a bug but there it is.

Yeah they disappear, that is so lame.

Fix one bug, other bugs arises. Neverending. I loved gifting CS and now this side of the game is lame boring and frustrating to me. Firaxis, fix this .....

Oh, so this didn't use to be a bug? I actually just found this feature recently and tried gifting like 5 units/turn to an embattled CS ally. Only to find the bug. :(

Yeah..it is a bit lame...but having said this, gifting to a CS can have a signficant effect....In one recent game I was able to stop the Mongols from taking over one of my CS allies....I was well ahead in technology, but I wasn't ready to take on the Mongols...they were a bit far away and it would have been a bit tedious to have to grind them down...

The CS was able to turn the tide with my military units, but they certainly didn't use them very well.... Once they started beating on the nearby Mongol cities, they would move the units...including modern armour, into position, then let them be destroyed within a few turns.... I was trying to get them to take out the Mongol cities and then raze them, but they kept screwing up....so I eventually went down there and did the job myself...;)

In another game I gifted Janissary units to a CS...it seemed to help, and it was interesting to watch my units fighting some far-off proxy war...:)

I actually don't mind when you gift units to a CS and then watch it fail to use them correctly. It strikes me as highly realistic - think of all the military hardware we gave to South Vietnam only to have the state collapse 2 years after we pulled out. There is alot of gifted war material from the USSR and US floating around the world, fueling proxy/civil wars...and just because one of the superpowers picked a side and dumped material on it doesn't mean it always worked. Often the 'gifts' just added to the casualties and made things worse without one side ever winning.

OT, I know...

But the whole proxy war thing falls apart when you can't gift units because they just dissappear. As i've said before, it's not always practical or possible to send units across the globe to gift directly. I wish someone would add this to the bug report.

Good point... when "I" as the civ "superpower" am trying to fight a proxy war, and the "locals" are simply not being effective, it does smack of reality, doesn't it....

Maybe, in my little "war', the CS just wanted the Mongols to go away and stop bothering them...

Load atomic bombs onto carriers, then gift the carriers to the CS. Give the Mongols a nice surprise :nuke:. Lol

Why be the superpower if you can't use your superpowered weaponry??

Also one new feature in G+K: if you gift a unit by *moving* it into the CS's territory, and then gift it using the "present" icon in their command panel, it immediately become's the CS's unit. (I'm pretty sure in vanilla Civ5 it would disappear and then reapear 3 turns later, just as it does now in G+K if you gift via the CS diplomacy screen.) Very handy for getting units to CS's fast, and they don't seem to disband them in this case. Doesn't work for aircraft though (which I've never seen a CS accept).

Yeah you can't land an aircraft in any city but your own. So i think the only way you could possibly (haven't tried this) gift an aircraft is to load it on a carrier and gift it.

But... what if I want to win again? What if I like that world, that setup, and so on? :(

.

Good point indeed, still we should be able to gift them and let them fight the proxy wars no matter how bad they are :-)

It takes a gifted unit to "arrive" 3-4 turns, if you see a Civ going for your fav CS, gift now! Not later.

You can gift aircraft from the CS diplomacy screen by clicking on one of your cities where an aircraft is based. (You have to move land units out of the city first, else they will be gifted instead.) But the CS never seems to use gifted aircraft.

Thanks for the tip, brohammad:goodjob:.

There isn't an equivalent to gift units diplomatically for full AIs is there? I'm trying to prop up an ally with advanced tech weaponry, but I really dont want to have to build a carrier to gift planes. Based on how he's (not) using the two battlewagons I gifted, he wouldn't know what to do with a carrier.
