Now, everyone should know my pedigree. Therefore it should come as no suprise that it has taken me until now to realize we're going to need a settler pump for the resettlement of the south. I started doing a dotmap and realized that's a lot of ICS. Now I needs to cipher where to put the DT. I probably miscounted on my 22 digits, but if I reduce the size of Headed that way, it should make a decent pump. I'm going to follow a coastal resettlement strategy to prevent alien incursions.

1210 - trebs 0-4 at CI. BFR kills a bow.

IT -Toku demands 35g. If he declares, do we get war happiness? Can't remember? I do remember the AI can't do landings in Civ3, so I refuse. Toku declares. Smoke lives up to his name and declares on Henri. Smoke wants to talk. No. Smoke RL a bow to kill a 4/4 keshik. Rioting in All the king's horsemen. Scroll ahead. No problem, but I'm gonna need to MM again.

1220 - build Tomb of the Unknown Idiot. 5/5 Origami kills a 2/3 bow. Gambling again. Send BFR after a 4/4 musket in Calakmul. It wins, but loses half strength. Another musket is uncovered. Build Whomp's Ski Palace. Spend 74 to build embassy with Osman. My earlier sacrifices to the PRNG are paying off. All Osman wants for war with Toku is our WM and 3 gpt. K

IT - smoke loses a bow to a sleestack and then uses a bow to kill an MI

1230 - 4/4 keshik kills 4/4 spear at Tulum

1240 - trebs 1-5 at tikal. Army of Heroes kills 3/3 musket at tikal. AoH then kills 3/4 musket at Tikal. Order of Idiots then attaks across a river, killing a 4/4 LB and taking Tikal. trabs go 2-4 at CI. 4/4 MI kills 4/4 jav at Tulum and takes the city. 4/5 keshik kills 4/4 bow, no joy.

IT - Henri signs on with Toku against us. Somehow I have now misclicked and it is 1255. We're doomed. I played an extra turn.

Maybe screenies will be up later, maybe they won't. Does everyone know whomp's secret? I'll never tell unless bribed in a suitable manner. ;)

Not my best set, but its coming back as to how to play this game. :crazyeye:

Two more of Smoke's cities gone...Coba and Tikal. He'll have a hard time recovering now.

Good idea getting Osman to help. I wonder if he's got Sipahis yet.

Wonderful!!!!!!!!!! Now I wish he'd trade a few sipahis to us for a couple of armies...or do I only get one wish? :hmm:

Thanks, AK. :D

Good stuff AK. Looks like your out of spring training and back in rare form.

Which secret? Have you been talking to Holly again? :hmm: I'll bet we cut off all of Osman's luxs he was getting from Toku so that's good too. How about we take this dealio overseas and grab those pyramids?

In-flight check, 1255 AD.

F3 shows us strong to everybody...Swap Capital Crone to Settler...

Let's see what I can do to keep ol' Tokugawa off balance. Dial up Caesar and sign peace w/ Rome. Rome and Maya are in a MA v. Henry...Portugal won't talk. Rome will sign MA v. Japan for Spices. Done.

GMA1_Rome_Alliance.jpg

At Chichen Itza, Trebs reveal a pike under two muskets... then a regular musket. I'll wait for reinforcements before really getting after this one, but Iron Gold's Army whacks a musket for good measure.

At Calakmul, Bede's First Regiment takes out a Musket, a Spear, and a longbow...taking the city.

GMA1_take_Calakmul.jpg

Army of Heroes is dispatched to the theater of operations against Chichen Itza. Order of Idiots advances on Lagartero, with Catapults in support. A musket and some Keshiks advance on ...something I don't want to spell.

Whip an Explorer at Tikal as a short rush for a Temple. Whip a Longbow as a short rush for a Temple in Bede's hill.

Scroll through the cities... hiring the occasional clown in an unhappy town.

Culture check: 17,113

Press <Enter>

IBT - Portugal and Rome sign peace.
Let's Make a Split Court>Granary
We get a Palace Expansion.

Turn 2/1260

I no longer have to worry about spelling the name of that Mayan town I sent troops against last turn. I call this screenie "sack what I can't spell".

GMA1_sackwhatIcantspell.jpg

Scratchin' Post founded, so Harriet's cats won't feel left out of this game either.

Army of Heroes takes a bit of damage whacking a pike as it joins Iron Gold's Army at the siege of Chichen Itza.

Whip a longbow at Tikal as a short rush for a Temple.

A little wheeling and dealing here... look closely and you'll see why the Ottomans don't yet have Sipahi...

GMA1_Ottoman_Trade.jpg

Culture check: 17,385, +272 last turn. Victory in 304 turns. There are only 298 turns left in the game, but our Libraries have not yet started to "age".

Library Age Analysis:
  • Capital Crone: 350 AD
  • BedeTucket: 360
  • Rumble Teddy: 400
  • MadVikingsHome: 360
  • Thar She Blows: 410
  • Lurkerborough: 430
  • Animal Farm: 420
  • Academy Idiotechnica: 360
  • Fumbahlieah: 430
  • Banana Rama: 410
  • Kazan: 350
  • WhomperRoom: 320

So that's a dozen libraries that will add an additional 3cpt each (36cpt) by 1,430 AD. By 1,530 AD our libraries in HeadedThatWay (500) and IronGold (520) will double in cultural value. Plus we're going to "whip out" some more culture. (I know...bad pun...)

IBT - IronGold Settler>Settler
Fumbahlieyeah Cathedral>Keshik
Animal Farm Aqueduct>Cathedral
TharSheBlows Caravel>Court
Hordeville MDI>Cathedral

Turn 3/1265

Order of Idiots make short work of the garrison at Lagartero.

GMA1_invest_lagartero.jpg

Dispatch some Keshiks to the Northeast, to meet our Caravels on the northern peninsula.

At Chichen Itza, Iron Gold's Army whacks a musket and two pikes while Army of Heroes takes a break to heal.

Marshamarshamarsha gets a clown, Dahran gets a tax collector. Whip a Temple in Crowded House at the cost of 2 citizens. Same-same in Smokey Wheat. For some reason I can't whip one for 16 shields at Nalayh... but it's producing 2spt anyway... I could whip a University at Rumble Teddy... but it'd cost 5 citizens, and I think that's a little over the top for a town producing 11spt net.

Culture check: 17,660, +275 from last turn, +3 in the change, Victory in 300.

IBT - A Portugese Carrack starts patrolling in the west... Capital Crone Settler>Redux
Whomper Room Settler>Redux
HeadedThatWay Settler>Keshik
Crowded House Temple>Library
Smokey Wheat Temple>Library

Turn 4/1270

Lob rocks at Chichen Itza again. Whip an Explorer at Lagartero as a Temple short rush. Bede's First Regiment moves to support the siege of Chichen Itza from the East, Order of Idiots from the south. This is the part I hate about Feudalism and Democracy in C3C... I have moved all 4 of our armies to within striking distance of Chichen Itza.. we are winning this war...

...and there are forty-two cities that will riot next turn. :dubious:

...more to follow...

Turn 4 - Continued

A "little while" later, after hiring a bunch of clowns and levying some "Extremely Heavy" taxes on Piedras Negras, I've got things set to where we shouldn't have any riots next turn... and I'm only losing 33 gpt. :crazyeye:

As much as I hate to do it... I trade silks to the Ottomans for his WM+90g. Hopefully that will give me the cash I need to finish the war against the Maya.

At least now I know that Pisae and Ravenna are Japanese, San Francisco is Ottoman, and Oporto is Japanese...nice to have a map.

Culture check: 17,939, +279 from last turn, +4 in the change, Victory in 295.

IBT - we have a Portugese Carrack off the coast of Idiot Bay... and in other news..a Japanese Galley and a Portugese Carrack and Galleon off the coast of Capital Crone... I do not like this. I do not like it at all.

Turn 5/1275

Swap CC to Keshik. Wake a Horse in HeadedThatWay, send him to RumbleTeddy and upgrade.

At Chichen Itza, Trebs knock hit points off the Musket and Pike. Stimpy goes after a spear, but no promotion. Army of Heroes whacks the 2/3 Pike, then a 3/3 Spear, then the redlined musket, and the city is ours. Other armies move out to the north to counter enemy landings.

GMA1_fallof_Chichen_Itza.jpg

Culture check: 18,218, +279 from last turn, Victory in 294.

IBT - Japanese and Portugese ships wander, then withdraw. :hmm: Japan and Ottomans sign peace :hmm: Chichen Itza riots (surprise) but the resistance is completely quelled by the 2 Armies I jammed in there. I will pull the armies out and start whipping citizens next turn.

IronGold equips a settler, Bedetucket finishes its court.

Turn 6/1280:

The gold situation is getting tough, and upgrading that Keshik hurt. I've got 20 in the treasury, and running -30 gpt defecit spending.

Oh yeah! I've got barbarians near Chichen Itza! :hammer:

I cannot remember needing 25g from a barb camp more than that! Gotta love the blitzing ability of these armies, as it had 2 warriors in it...and I am desperate to get solo Keshiks to the other end of this continent to get on a boat and finish the Maya.

Smokey's Bane founded.

Culture check: 18,497, +279 from last turn, Victory in 293.

IBT - A Portugese Carrack attacks one of our Caravels and sinks!

Mayans drop a longbow off next to Chichen Itza.

Something produced a granary, but I muffed the "zoom to"...so I have no idea what's next in the queue. MadVikingsHome finishes a University, starts a Cathedral.

Turn 7/1285

First order of business: Rush the Temple at Chichen Itza at a cost of 3 citizens. :whipped:

Stimpy whacks the longbow, no leader.

Middle Finger founded.

I have to put some of our towns on starvation diets to do it... but i get us from -32 gpt to +8. I hope that buys me just enough time to finish off the Maya.

Culture check: 18,780, +283 from last turn, +4 in the per-turn rate, Victory in 287. With 293 turns left from this point... victory is officially in reach.

IBT - Japanese drop off a Cavalry, while the Portugese drop off a Longbow.

Chichen Itza Temple>Library
Capital Crone is training Keshiks..
Jungle Hill riots.

Turn 8/1290

Bede's First Regiment whacks the Portugese Longbow and Japanese Cavalry.

Henry will finally talk to us. Dial up Henry and sign straight up peace.

The treaty with Portugal seems to help... I start the turn at -8gpt, and finish it at +75gpt. (I fired "one or two" clowns. :D )

Whip a Temple at Bede's Hill. What a lovely metaphor that temple will be.

Urban Sprawl founded.

Dial up Caesar and buy Metallurgy for 57gpt.

Culture check: 19,065, +285 from last turn, +2 in the per-turn rate, Victory in 284.

IBT - Bede's Hill Temple>Library

Turn 9/1295

Short rush the Library at Chichen Itza with a longbow at the cost of 2 citizens.
Whip a Settler as a short rush for a Temple in Tulum.
Whip the Library in PointFlank at a cost of 2 citizens.
Pass on the opportunity to whip the Temple at Ake for 2 citizens, we could wait 3 turns and whip it for 1. Same Opportunity at Nalayh.
Whip the last 20 shields for a Temple at Tahdah for 1 Citizen.
Whip the Temple at Tikal for a citizen.

Land 3 Keshiks outside the new Mayan Capitol, Xcalumkin.

We can buy an alliance w/ Ottomans v. Japan for ... basically our treasury. I'll let the team decide.

Culture check: 19,352, +287 from last turn, +2 in the per-turn rate, Victory in 282.

IBT - Ottomans request an audience. They want to trade Territory maps. Not until I get this continent settled buddy.

IronGold keeps pumping settlers... though we may need to build a few Keshiks there soon.

We build some other stuff... I'm tired of typing at this point.

Ottomans start Newton's.

Turn 10/1300 AD

SilkPoint2 founded.

Xcalumkin Captured. It somehow seems fitting that the last battle of the last war between the Mongol and Mayan nations was fought between a Keshik and a Javelin Thrower.

GMA1_Maya_Gone.jpg

Now that the war is over and Chichen Itza will sustain a content citizen, I short rush the library at Chichen Itza with a Musket.

[lecture mode]
Chichen Itza is now size 1; citizens born henceforth will be Mongol, and its borders will expand in 2 turns. All this a scant five turns after its capture. That, my friends, is how you deal with a captured Pop 11 city when you're in a government that allows you to whip the citizens.
[/lecture mode]

I am able to take lux down to 40% with no observable ill effects. That puts us at +103gpt...even after shelling out 63gpt to the AI for Metallurgy and such.

Culture check: 19,352, +294 from last turn, +7 in the per-turn rate, Victory in 274.

Since this one is about to shift gears in a major way... I think I'm going to stop here and hand a mid-turn save off to Harriet.

@Harriet: You're good at micromanaging, and this one needs that right now. I had to curtail growth in order to deal with the war weariness. Quite frankly, the cities are a mess for the most part. Sorry.

From here there are a couple of things we need to work on. First, we need to work towards something that resembles tech parity.

See if you can salt some money away and buy a tech or two for lump sum payments. The AI tend to spend lump sum on military, while spending GPT on research. If we can buy tech for lump sum payments we can likely fan the flames on the other continent, and actually slow the AI research machine down a bit.

Buy from the poor... for as little as you can.

It would be nice to get Military Tradition, upgrade our trebuchets to cannon, get into the Industrial Age, and get Steam Power. The AI on the other continent have Nationalism... and we are in no shape to take them on with the kinds of troops we've got. But if we can get rails, we should have no trouble defending our own continent.

We should probably keep the fire lit under Tokugawa's butt... my guess is that he's researching Fascism or Communism. Japan's in Monarchy, the others are Republics. If we can get them all to switch to Fascism it will severely curtail the AI. If they go fascist, they'll lose population and likely stay at war for the rest of the game.

Here's >>> The Save <<<.

Yup! I don't think I've seen a single save that didn't have one or more riots...ongoing, just fixed, or on the verge, but I think 42 is a record so far. Nothing seems to make our peeps happy.

Got it and will try to play tonight. Will try to MM cities for gold, get new techs (esp MT and Steam Power), stay at war with Japan, maybe buy MA with Osman (the least he could do after getting horses from us) and, of course, continue to build culture. :hmm:

Regular roster update:

Gram H. - up
Whomp - on deck

Ain't that the truth. More luxs would make them happy. I wonder what the going price is overseas? We could use a lux or three but at what cost?

I'll look at that also. Maybe 2 of ours for 1 of theirs plus some gpt? Our income may go up if we can put some of those deadbeat citizen clowns back to work, huh?

gmaharriet said:

That's what I was thinking. We probably have a couple to hook up and I'd bet our income could actually go up without clowns in the core.

the problem with the lux trading is that the AI just don't have much to go around... I think the Portugese might have some free dyes...but that's about it...

Though it just pains me to think about it... if we want another lux I guess we'll just have to get industrial, build some rails and some troops...and go out and TAKE another lux.

scoutsout said:

I haven't played yet...just studying our towns. The Portuguese will trade their dyes for, um, I think it was horses and salt...the extras aren't doing us much good, though they are at war with the Ottomans.

Most of our gpt is coming from taxmen, so I'm wanting to make the dye trade, lower our lux slider and put the taxmen back to work for growth (for pop to spend on culture).

We can buy Military Tradition for our entire economy right now, but that includes gpt and I believe the idea was to buy for straight gold. It sure would be nice to be building our own cavs, rather than relying on another civ's alliance against the Japanese. I'm not sure how all this would fit together after buying dyes and subsequent MMing (my lack of experience is showing again.)

I probably won't get this played tonight, so input will be gratefully accepted. :)

If Henry is at war with anybody (especially Japan) trade him the horses and salt for the lux.

That deal right there is the closer on this game. Selling strategic resources into a cat fight on another continent will accomplish what scout was getting at above - dragging the other continent into inefficient governments and crippling their research and productivity

Now you're talking!! But be sparing of the whip.

And don't fall into the trap of thinking that a working citizen has to be better than a tax collector. In your current government unless you need either food or shields, better have them collect the surplus directly. If there is a field that has a commerce bonus use it if you can. But working a roaded field for gold is a mug's game in feudalism (unless you have been wasting shields on markets, or even worse banks).

Get thee behind me, Satan. You don't need cavalry until they start bringing infantry. And relying on the other guy is the best way to pull this one off. So resist that temptation. But keep training the cheapest troops you can for garrison duty and as a deterrent. In fact train troops right up to the support limit.

Nothing discourages an AI bent on landing on your shores more than staring into the hairy faces of 500 angry Mongols waving sharp sticks.

Good...that's what I wanted to do. Maybe he will go after Japan as well as Osman with the needed resources.

Whip only in corrupt towns, right? And I think I can get many towns growing again without putting ALL the taxmen to work...there are 2 or 3 in several towns.

But keep training the cheapest troops you can for garrison duty and as a deterrent. In fact train troops right up to the support limit.

Ok, (and this question is mostly for Scout) but there are some longbows training in towns without rax, a couple of caravels and I think a granary in a corrupt town. I'm assuming these are placeholders for whipping and not meant to complete? Maybe the caravels are needed though if we will be going on the offense later?

Another question...some of our core towns are fairly large...do we want to halt growth if building military (and not settlers) and the happy/unhappy citizens are about balanced?
