Even though Civ V is my first Civ game, I've watched my friend play Civ 4 a few times. However, one thing I noticed was that "Warlords" and "Beyond the Sword" were separate applications/programs (was there a way to access the content of both at the same time?). So, do you think Gods & Kings and Brave New World will use separate applications or the same application? (I really hope the latter ends up being the case).

Considering G&K and a whole lot of DLC is out already, we know the answer to that - it's one application, but you can uncheck using any extras in the main menu.

To answer your first question, if you had Warlords installed, but were playing Beyond the Sword, you got all the new features and civilizations that came with Warlords, but not the scenarios. To play the scenarios, you had to actually boot up Warlords. For Gods & Kings and Brave New World, I really hope they aren't separate applications. Better yet, I want all Gods & Kings civs to appear in Brave New World scenarios whenever it seems necessary, and vice versa. It doesn't have to happen upon launch, but they seem to be doing something along those lines with their inclusion of a "deluxe" Conquest of the New World scenario.

What we know :

1. Due to the nature of the game, both G&K and BNW are "DLCs" and are loaded upon the launch of Civ 5, but you can choose to "disable" them via the DLC menu

2. BNW will have everything that G&K with the exception of the 9 civs and 3 scenarios, but will consist of religion, 100 hp system, etc.

In case of G&K, consider it like DLC or even mod, that is by default loaded, and can be disabled from the menu.

If disabled and game is restarted, you get vanilla Civ5.

Anyway, it's only one application. Unlike Civ4, new patches for Civ5 apply to both vanilla and G&K users, since G&K is considered a DLC, or a "mod" of Civ5.

Now I'm not sure how will this work with Brave New World.

How would game look with BNW on and G&K off?

EDIT:
Ok, TheKingOfBigOz did answer this. New rules from G&K will apply to BNW, but without G&K extra civs and scenarios will not be present.

I kinda like it. Keeps G&K relevant, while not compromising gameplay without it, as long as you have BNW.

You didn't even need to have warlord installed in order to play the civilizations.

This is correct. If you bought BTS, the only thing owning a Warlords CD got you were the scenarios. When installing Civ4 on a new PC, I skip the Warlords installation completely, since scenarios do not interest me.

So knowing this, I had the same question with BNW, since the steam sale is going on right now. From below it sounds like it's still worth me picking up G&K for the nine civs. Has this been confirmed somewhere? The other bonus would be to actually play with the updates between now and BNW release, since I'm considering finally getting into Civ5.

They have confirmed that the nine civs in Gods and Kings will not be part of Brave New World. You should get Gods and Kings not just because of the civs, but because it completely ruins vanilla Civ V by being that much better.

^But if you get BNW, G&K only matters for civs and scenarios. All other aspects are already included with BNW.

Well, that why "gold upgrade" (G&K plus all DLCs) is pretty cheap. 10€ total (without current 75% discount).

Have no idea why is G&K still sold separately for 30€.

Why is there not a mod that will allow a folder named say "Civ 5 - Vanilla" then a folder named Civ 5 - Gods and Kings" so that two versions of Civ3 to be held at the same time. There seems to be only one entry under Docs and Settings.........My Games ....... Civ 5 into which all mods and DLC are put. Back in the good old days of programming "%/" was the code to indicate use the current folder as a root folder. Now it would appear that "C:\Documents and Settings\user name\my games\Civ 5\Mods"etc has been hard coded into the fabric of the code. I find this very hard to beleive. Back in the past when we filled in coding sheets by candle light we could always build a variable to find the correct folder. Can someone reply and would it be difficult to constuct a mod to allow this.

Thanks to all that reply I am fairly new to Civ 5 but started in IT learning Assembler in 1965

Not sure what such a mod would accomplish that you can't already do inside the game.

Launch Civ V, go to the DLC tab, select what expansions and DLCs you want to play with, and then start your game.

Civ 4, not to mention Civ 3, are old games. They did not have modern DLCs. Because of that their expansions had separate exe files and your gaming experience depended on what you initially launched. The 2nd expansion, BTS, caused natural problem of covering the huge gap between vanilla and BTS, so it pretty much had to have everything from Warlords included. Otherwise, C4W and C4BTS would have to be completely different games, but it would be insane to develop BTS as anything other than further expansion of Warlords.

Civ5 is modular. It allows us to add and remove elements of gameplay at whim. The best example of it is steam workshop. There is no need for "separate games" anymore. As it has already been stated several times, we can enable dlc/extension content any time we want without the need of restarting anything or using different folders/exes/whatever.

The problem with the gap between vanilla and BNW is exactly the same as it was with c4 and its expansions, hence we have almost all GnK elements in BNW expansion. Why is GnK still sold separately? Because why not? Firaxis won't mind if someone pays 30€ for it.
