Just saw over at Apolyton that Civilization 4 is going gold this week... That seems concerning to me, I'm wondering when we are going to start hearing about gameplay details? Correct me If im wrong, but didn't we know much more about Civilization 3 when it was at this point in it's dev cycle? I trust Firaxis, but I'm a little skeptical, all it seems like they've shown me thus far is promises of cool features and graphics, but not much detail on how the game clicks (AI, political, etc).

It was (originally) in the Pcgamer Podcast or whatever it is that TF has brought up on both the mainpage and a thread here. The MP3 with an interview of Sid Meier. They opened it up with "Civ IV is going gold this week"

I've read so much about it that I'm ready and can't wait to play NOW. I've read about the tweeking of the AI as far as respect for boarders and negotiating with regard to religion and government. I really like what I've seen and read and JUST CANT WAIT TO PLAY.

I doubt that's true. "Gone gold" means the game is finished and the final CD is sent to manufacturer for duplication.

Usually a game goes gold a week or two before the release date. Civ4 is coming out in late October (assuming the 25th), so we are still like 6 weeks away from the release date.

It IS rather suspicious.

Lets say it is going gold like in monday (19th) and it will be a world wide release then they need more time to ship it around and they need to press more disc ect
Then they hold on to it a bit for marketing and release it in mid october the 17th. The faster it is out the better for us and for Take 2, right.
Call me stupid but I belive in the power of a "not-delayed" release of a game!!

Usually its out in 2-3 weeks from the day it goes gold.

Info from local game retailer: Civ 4 available in Sweden October 21!! :D

Did they release a demo for CIV 1 2 or 3?

I think there is one for SMAC.
no idea. I didn't follow Civ 1-3 as much as I am with Civ 4. Anyone else out there know if they did? But this is Take 2 publishing it so it depends on what they push too.

Well, once they decided upon a release date, wont mean they will release the game earlier just cus it went gold.

To someone outside the gaming industry it might seem reasonable to release it as fast as possible, but timing the release is very important nowadays. The two biggest markets is the christmas and summer market, and they dont want to outcompete other releases from the same producer, or release at the same time as another similar game they think might steal the glory. Take Two seem to have other reasons to release it in october tho.

Thats what the guys in the podcast said.

Didn't Sid say it also?

@TF: Do we know it's late October, or just before Holloween? Of course, the amount of time between the Gone Gold date and the release date can vary...

Best guess for release date is October 25 at this point. I expect it to go gold a week or two before that.
