Did you ever consider having a game of the month where you could do as many saves and restarts as you like? I know it is very difficult for me to not restart when my tank is destroyed by the preverbial spearman unit.

This has been discussed thoroughly in multiple threads (most recently in the CIV GOTM forum). Bottom line - there's no valid comparison between games, which belies the reason to have a GOTM. And relying on replaying a portion of the game to counter a bad RNG or to improve your situation does not lead the player to improve their play.

An interesting idea...but you would really destroy the essence of these games. What sets them apart from "everyday" games. I find it helps to think a little beyond the graphic limitations...that Spear unit may well have managed to sabotage the tank unit before the battle! ;)

Ah, the goal is to improve game play, not score. Makes sense. You can look at it another way, however. I try to maximize the potential of the position I am dealt at any given time. I view restarting as creating an alternate universe where my view of the "best of all possible worlds" is allowed to evolve.

I think it would be interesting to compare this type of game with "pure" games in terms of maximum scores achieved. Scores should be higher, but How much higher?

Anyway, if it has been discussed and rejected that's that. Thanks for taking the time to let me know.

There is, of course, nothing preventing you from taking old games and restarting them many teams to see what you could have done better.

I have found old COTM/GOTM to be very helpful in learning more about how to play...

I've started playing without restarting or reloading to practice for next month's game. It does make me a bit more concervative in handling workers and settlers! I'm also going to have to prepare my offensives a bit more because I won't be able to negotiate with the RNG about battle outcomes.

It should be fun and I am looking forward to participating.

I have to say, the first GOTM I played was great for me - it was the iroquois COTM, and my capitol rioted 3 times in the first 20 turns !!

After a while you learn to scope out when the rioting might occur so you're prepared to deal with it the turn before it happens.

Also, you can install ainwood's CivAssistII; it will provide notice for several events, including when rioting is about to occur.

yup - that game was a great one for me - I had been dealing with rioting by reloading a lot in my solo games, but I had to break that habit for that and the HOF games.

I reload many before,
Now I look my game like my real life, the life is not optimality.
mistake and error is essential of the life, try to adapt them and
know how to recover from them, further, avoid them before them happen,
like the real life!

It still happens to me now, after so many years. I am currently playing the GOTM 64 and my capital must have rioted at least 2 times in the beginning turns. Maybe I will learn one day!!
