Anyone have a favorite DVD Codec that is freeware?

Have you ever used K-Lite Codec Pack? I'm just curious if there's any obvious reason to consider changing to CCCP?

Not recently, I doubt there's any compelling reason switch if the k-lite pack is working fine for you.

I recommend the CCCP because of its release quality (they do releases every 5 months, and they releases are stable and usable for that time) and it's relatively small size, since they don't include support for obscure formats or for video encoding.

And it's now official endorsed by the Mastroska project, since they stopped with their own pack. :)

VLC media player is the way to go. I have yet to find something that it doesn't play, even weirdly packed mpeg4 spin offs.

I found the player itself terrible. Clumsy and non-intuitive controls pushed me back to K-Lite and Media Player Classic.

I find VLC to be the best player for dvd's as it can play any region disks. Other than that, it is somewhat clumsy. Its not designed for every-day use, but rather for playing those weird formats ( I think it can even play partially finished bittorent files, although I might be wrong).

Every media player can play unfinished files. Well, except if you're using some ancient OS (*ahem* Windows)... :)

Also, I've found VLC to have problems with QuickTime movies. Other than that, everything goes.

The interface may look clumsy, but the only annoyance I have with it are the subtitles. Although they work and are customizable, you can't move them under the video. If you want nice subtitles, use BSPlayer, which is also a great player, sadly for Windows only.

Have you ever used VLC in fullscreen mode? First problem is the lack of "pause on LMB" and the second is the playback controls as a whole (I can't think of any benefit for that movable panel but it's always in the way when you're switching between windowed and full screen; and it doesn't remember the size and location so I have to resize and drag it every damn time).

I found the GOM player (freeware from Gretech) to be the easiest I've tried (Had to watch a DVD for homework, and WMV wasn't helping, turned out it was MPEG-2, and all those plug-ins are for money on WMV).

Nice thing about it is makes a guess about the specific codec you need based on the file, and then downloads it for you.

I havent had problems playing mpeg-2 with wmv using the k-lite codec pack.

I like CCCP and VLC. VLC isn't perfect but it plays DVDs nicely. I'd much rather use VLC than hunt down my copies of PowerDVD or the other DVD player that is bundled with CD/DVD drives.

I use VLC in fullscreen mode on a regular basis. Switching between windowed and fullscreen couldn't be easier (double click), and I don't really know what movable panel you have in mind.

Also, what's LMB?

What I had in mind is the play controls. In fullscreen mode they weren't (or at least weren't in the version I had) part of the full video screen but as a separate panel that could be positioned any way you want, but it didn't remember it's position or size between restarts.

Also if I exited fullscreen (easily by double-clicking) and later wished to return to fullscreen again the stupid controls were maxed to fullscreen too and the actual video was under it! Then I had to resize and reposition it again to both have it as I want and to see the film beneath.

That would be Left Mouse Button.

I think the movable panel he is talking about is when you go from non-full screen with always on top selected to full screen. It leaves a window that is the same size as the original screen behind that is still always on top. I have been meaning to submit a bug on that.
