Hi I'm currently using Byzantium Basil II for my domination victories but the Porphyrogénnētos. cavalry ability trivialises the impact of walls. What's the best basic civ to learn storming walled cities the normal way with siege weaponry & Ballista - Rome?

I'm not sure I understand the question correctly, but the Ottomans are a great civ for rushing sieges of cities near your territory thanks to the -50% Production cost modifier

1) Ottomans
2) Ottomans
3) Ottomans
4) Gran Colombia (bonus movement)
5) Macedon (though Macedon is rather siege equipment, not siege units, so better use Ottomans)

Also bonus siege strength have civs with increased diplovisibility - Mongolia, France base Catherine

Basically I would say if you are looking for fairly "basic" civ, go with Catherine. She does not get any direct buffed units, but diplovisibility and early promoted spy helps to learn warmongering without getting addicted to certain OP unit. It basically levels strength between a player and high difficulty AI.

sorry I may have worded it badly,I'll try to rephrase it I want a civ with no bonuses to seige weapons etc but I'm going to give Ottomans a shot no pun intended :)

I still don't understand. You want to directly assault cities with melee units as opposed to ranged attacks with siege units?

no I want to play a fairly straightforward civ that requires siege units to attack walled cities ( so no Religion allows walls to be ignored ability or any other anti-wall siege abilities ) does that make sense?

As far as I understand it they want to learn the game mechanics of laying siege to a city.

Using Ottomans or Byzantium or other Civs with a combat bonus impedes learning the 'normal' mechanics.

I suggest a Civ that has no direct combat bonus to units. Maybe go for Wilhelmina, Gitarja, Kristina, Kupe, Ludwig, Pedro, Poundmaker or anyone like that.

yup thats it! thanks

My recommendation(s) are Macedon and Persia. Neither have direct bonuses against walls but are strong military civs that will give you the tools to learn how to capture cities.

Macedon is especially great- they’re designed to let you focus solely on fighting and ignore the rest of the game. Plus, they can familiarize you with both the Melee and Heavy Cavalry lines.

Rome is my pick. Even with their uu, you still won't be able to just steamroll cities with walls. Of course give them a battering ram and it's gg.

That's explain a lot. So France, very very basic civ in terms of military, no useful unique unit to spam (Guarde Imperiale is meh and not for attacking cities), but still a little of warmonger because of instant +3 strength from diplomatic visibility, negating bonus AI strength (emperor?) or decresing their combat advantage.

With a civ with basically no OP unique unit you can leran how to use siege units and/or siege equipment, use support bonus, great generals etc.

(Attacking fortified cities is also a bit of spying for another level of diplovisibility and Catherine Black Queen is just one promotion to level 2 spy/)

If you don't need +3 strength for all units, go with any civ without unique unit or strong faithbuying support, but with strong early game: Cree, Netherland or sth

I think this is right though I might give France a bash, Rome is Vanilla turned up to 11 but still a solid civ

You can't actually win a domination with Byzantium. The Taxis ability means you get stuck with a religious victory if you dominate.
Macedon and Rome are both great CIVs for early rushes because they have early unique melee units that you can use with battering rams to overwhelm your opponents even if they have walls. The Gaul's gaesatae is also great if you have a productive capital that can spit them out quickly right from the get go (no techs or resources required). Because they get a boost against units that have higher base strength, they remain relevant a bit longer.

You can play pretty much any civ then, as only Basil gets the wall damage from non-siege units.
If you want someone who is nearly identical but without the wall damage, just go for Theodora.
Personally I prefer her to Basil anyway, because she is flexible for other victory conditions apart from just domination.

I'm tempted to go Gaul tonight :)

If you're interested in getting a quick heads up about how to judge your starting location when you play them, I made a video where I assess five random starting locations and am confident that they come up. You can watch it here:

watching the video I thought you were being sarky about Tamar,I love the civ 2 music as well :)

Thanks! I haven't played Tamar in ages, and I know she gets a lot of flack in the CIV community for being terrible, but I visited Georgia some years ago and loved the country and am pretty sure I played as her while I was there (or soon after). I had a great time because (well, I won, which is always nice) but I loved her play style and her bonuses because I love golden ages and thought the focus on city walls was a nice little way to play the game that opened up new policy cards that were really cool. It was just a lot of fun. Thanks for watching.

Hope you had fun playing as Gaul.
