I need a strategy to beat the American Revolution scenario. I managed to take Boston, but a lot of my minutemen were taken out, and the naval fleet makes my cities weak for the enemy to come in and kill us.

yea i pick the british

Minutemen? I just started playing Civilization, but I thought that the American UU was the Navy Seal?!? and aren't you England?

Oh, why id you have to capture Boston? I thought that Boston was on the American's side during the Revolution.

American History 101: ;)

Washington took back Boston from the British after the Green Mountain Boys took artillery from Fort Ticonderoga, gave it to colonial forces under Henry Knox, who took it to the heights above Boston and fired on RN ships and troops, forcing the Redcoats to abandon the city.

What I did to win (as America) was to immediately pull back the troops that are stationed next to boston. Usually, a portion of the garrison will come out of Boston and attempt to capture Albany, Philidelphia, or NYC. what you need to do is ambush the troops when they are out in the open, NOT in a forest that gives them a defense bonus, as the British troops are much stronger than the American regulars, so you should also attempt to use overwelming force as well. after that, hole up in your cities and start pumping out soldiers, who take a lot less time to make than the Brits'. British ships will constantly bombard the defences of your cities, but rarely do they drop off troops outside of Halifax. Once you get a good force together, make a couple armies to take cities like Pensacola, Ft. Ritts, and Quebec. while this is happening, amass an army to capture Boston. be aware that a couple turns after that, a massive wave of hessians troops will arrive at Halifax, and you will probably lose at least Portland, and maybe Boston. Do everything you can to slow the Hessians down, as Spain and France rarely give any real help outside of random attacks by Spain on Mobile, and a couple French Frigates cruising around. If are lucky and are able to take and hold some cities of Britain, as well as holding your own, you will probably win a score or time victory, as it is just about impossible to totally destroy the British. Don't even bother with a navy, as British ships are better and more numerous that yours, and they send ships to block your harbors so that you cannot amass a fleet from several different cities.

I won a score and a time victory but was not real excited because all you can do is defend. I wished I had more power to blow their doors off. If you just hold the cities you have you win. In one game I took small towns like Detroit and others on the West but on the next game I skipped doing that and focused more on defense alone however I almost took Boston even though I figured it wasn't needed. I stood on a hill outside and provoked them. Overall you should get continental soldiers on a hill, maybe with a fort, to taunt the British, that gives a defense bonus. If they attack your city, that's the best, because you are outgunned all the way and defense is the name of the game. You can let them walk about your turf somewhat unless they pillage, then wipe them out if the passers by do that. They tend to crusie the appalachian mountians, probably for safty. Keep your workers with a military unit. Go about the British areas pillaging everything but avoid combat. Upgrade troops with defense bonuses. If they drop off troops in mass amounts on your land it will be near NYC. Keep that town and Phily well stocked with continental soldiers. Use the south for economic growth. Calvary (though weaker) and an extensive road network help for quick manuvering of units when needed for back up.

Actually I came here thinking my strategy was lame but it seems others use a similar one.

I've tried a couple, but here goes my best shot:
All those troops near Boston? Screw em. Get out of Boston till you have 5 Cannons and more troops. Fortify those troops in Philadelphia, New York, etc. Build Barracks after the first soldier in each city, then set em all on full troops. Use Workers to build Workshops and Watermills. Make all your cities production cities! Research is nonexistent. Once you have 40 troops, send 20 to Boston, and 20 to Halifax. Capturing Halifax will keep British reinforcements from getting south. Build some Ships and put em near the North. This'll dissuade the Brits from blockade running. For the last strike, make even more troops and grab the Canadian cities. Let the Spanish take the british cities down south.

Winning with the British is tough since you must be ahead on points or have captured all cities to win before the clock winds down. Two main challenges with the Brits are :

1) Money - you can't win the war if you have none as your soldiers will strike
2) Mobility - British are dropped off in Halifax. They must come a long way to attack the American cities. Its best to use transports to shuttle them down, but sometimes you have more troops then transports so they better get walking..

Here's how I overcame these and changed history forever!

1) Use the Lower Canadian cities of Montreal, Trois Rivier etc as your Gold producers. Immediately build workers, farms and cottages as you can defend them by having one or two pickets in the forest between Albany. Once growing, have them build markets, banks etc. Near the end of the game you can build soldiers when you are cash rich. This solves #1.

2) Have a worker building roads exclusively starting in Halifax down to Portland. Once you take Portland, Albany and New York, use the workers to connect these to the Lower Canadian cities. This will increase mobility of workers and soldiers and trade. Have a worker follow your army linking up roads to newly captured cities. This solves #2.

3) Ships. Ships actually sap your gold as they cost one gold each to support. Early in the game, disband a bunch of them. Only keep about 4-5 war ships, and two transports at most. Use your war ships in a picket format to destroy french transports bringing soldiers to the aid of the colonies.

4) Use terrain, there's lots of advantage in forest and hills.

5) Simply defend the southern cities. Build some farms etc to grow them but dont worry to much

6) Interestingly enough, your cities may demand emancipation. I switched over and my cities were happier and grew faster

Once you take Philidelphia you should have little resistance.

This thread is two and a half years old.

Why did you post in it?

actually, i found this relevant to what i was searching for =D
could any of you upload a link to where i can download the scenario, cas i hella want to play it and for some reason when i go to civ 4 vanilla it just isnt there (i got civ 4 gold)

Wow. Been a long time since I played this one. I remember putting a stack in a forest near Boston and watching mass suicide by the Brittish.
