goodhut turns into city

I did post this in the newbie thread and got sort of a response from one person. Thought maybe some of you could shine some light on it.

In the game I have going now (PtW), I stepped on a goody hut. A city was made right where that goody hut was. I never seen this happen in civ3.

I didn't want the city there at that time. It was out in the middle of nowhere and early in the game. On top of that I was playing the elimination victory condition, so that's really scary. I did end up reloading the game from autosave

Is this what happens now instead of getting a settler or is this concept in civ3 minus ptw?

It is a new ability in PTW, you can still get settlers but you also can get cities. Cities appear mainly for expansionist civs, though it can happen for regualr civs, at a much lower rate.

It happened in Civ 3, just infrequently. I have several saved games of it, I will just have to dig through a number of them to find it; it is in the manual as well. It is not a new ability.

You can still get settlers in PtW; they follow the same rules as in Civ 3, though. So, if you have more cities, a Settler, or a Settler in production, then you won't get a Settler out of a hut, but you can still get a town from a hut.

I thought it started only in PtW, I never saw it in regular civ3. :hmm: Can anyone else confirm this?

I played a lot of civ3 and never seen it happen either. Of course, I didn't play expansionist civs all that often.

Kind of wish there was a way to make it not do that. Stepping on goody huts in the middle of nowhere is scary now.

This has not happened to me yet, but from what I have heard, if in regular Civ3 your borders expand to capture a goodyhut, there is a chance that if that goodyhut had originally intended to become a settler will automatically turn into a city.

Read the manual; it is in the Civ 3 manual.

I will see if I can find the saved games when I get to my Civ 3 computer (much later tonight). Barring that, I will play a straight Civ3 game until it happens. It happens most frequently with Expansionist Civs (don't remember if it happens with non Exp. or not). It seems that it may have been temporarily disabled (for practical purposes, odds reduced drastically) in one of the earlier patches.

Page 67 of the civ3 manual. Weird I never seen it happen, until today. I was playing an expansion civ, Vikings.

It doesn't happen anywhere near as much in Civ 3 as it does in PtW. In PtW, I get them on a regular basis.

Firaxis said in PTW they increased the odds of getting cities from huts. I've popped thousands of huts with expansionist civs in Civ3 and the only times I ever got cities was when popping huts with culture.

I don't know if the same rules apply for getting cities as getting settlers, but I'm sure they are. I prefer the settlers, because I don't want a city that is 1 tile from the coast  (but I guess that is better than getting nothing or barbarians).

I had to make a scenario to make it happen in civ3: a city that expanded over a goody hut on an island! It is really hard to get in civ3! :)

In the game I'm in the middle of right now it happened. In fact it was the second city built. It was vanilla Civ, and I was playing China. No settler - boom: an entire city. It was definitly the only time I've ever seen it. I'll go back and check my saves, and see if I can post the game.

No, you can get a City when you can't get a Settler, at least in PtW. I had a Settler on the move when I popped a Town from Hut using a Scout; I was shocked, I didn't think you could get one in that situation. In that circumstance, I wouldn't have been able to get a Settler because I already a live Settler.

In PtW, I have gotten more Towns from Huts than I have Settlers from Huts.

Meant to make the topic goody hut. Ooops.

Agreed, it shouldn't be in the elimination game. I didn't hesitate to reach into that "auto save" folder.

I have YET to get a settler from a goody hut. :(

No way to change this around by playing with the text whatever it is or something?

This happened to me and I posted a thread about it called "Goody Hut shocker in PTW"

It happens to expansionist civs in alternation with settlers. You can only avoid this by not using huts.

Mike B Explanation Thread

In PTW, Expansionist civs can get cities from goody huts fairly frequently. (There are some rare circumstances where other civs can get a city from a goody hut -- as there were in Civ3.)

Also, are you aware of the requirements to get Settlers from Huts, alkayduh?

Mike B Explanation of Goody Huts popping Settlers Thread

Settler:
*Player must not have a settler (active or in production) or any unit with the Settle AI strategy.
*Number of player's cities must be <= (TotalCities / NumActivePlayers).

from what i know, in civ3, u must have popped a goody hut with an EXPLORER to get a city. i read this in 'poly forums.

Pretty tough requirements early in the game, can't be building a settler at all. Some town is usually building a settler in the early stages.

Makes the game more interesting I suppose.

I don't mind so much "not getting a settler".

I know the next time I play elimination, no goody huts. That can make it to easy for either side to lose. I know if the ai had a lone city out in the middle of nowhere on "elimination" early in the game, the temptation would just be to great. :)

well what i do is whenever im about to pop a goody hut and one of my cities are building a settler, i temporarily change the production to something else (eg. barracks, granary) and once the hut is popped i put it back on settler. it helps a lot as i seem to get a lot of settlers out of huts this way.
