i was knocked from the top spot of a couple tables the last update. it seems one strategy used was to hike the first worker around until a settler was popped from a hut. probably abandoning the game if not found within so many turns. in one game: 230BC Huge Regent Domination, the start has a hut next to the starting units. two cities were founded in 3950BC. i tried to replicate this start, but i am unable to pop a settler from the starting hut.

looking at further saves i can see that the settler was moved one square SW. next turn founding the capitol. knowing the settler has to move i try a few restarts to repeat that beginning:

1. 4000BC move settler SW, worker any direction within one move of hut. 3950BC move worker to hut after settling --> 25 gold.
2. 4000BC move settler SW, worker stay in place. 3950BC move worker to hut after settling --> 25 gold.
3. i don't think you can get a settler from a hut if you already have one around, but just to see i tried to pop the hut without settling --> this time i get masonry.
4. confused, i attempt to pop the hut in 4000BC with the settler around --> only maps.

i'm sure a hut would be needed to get two cities on 3950BC. i thought with save random seed the hut would always pop the same. i see that it depends on the turn as well. what else contibutes to the randomness of huts? how come i am unable to pop a settler? i wanted to replay a little of the beginning of this game to see if i am able to keep the same pace, but without popping a settler how can it be done?

IIRC you only can pop a settler from a hut, if you don't have one already. Thus, you have to settle your first town before try ing to pop the hut. And I believe on 4000BC, you'll never pop a settler...

I think you can't get the settler in 4000 BC because you need to have no more than the average number of cities/civs on the map...the AI don't have any cities until you end your turn in 4000BC.

Thanks for the input. I thought moving the settler then next turn settling, followed by the worker popping the hut would produce the settler, but instead i only get 25 gold.

I believe preserve random seed does not always give the same result from computer to computer, though it should always give the same result on a computer.

You cannot pop a settler from a hut if you have one.
You also cannot pop a settler if you pop the hut with a city formation.
The only way to pop a settler with a hut in 3950 BC is with a worker or a scout.

There exists no guarantee that you'll pop a settler. It's a PRng event. Oystein had an article around here somewhere on that.

thanks. the preserve seed thing had me confused. i was thinking that it might not work form computer to computer. i'll do a search for oystein.

tanks for the link. i was going to run scenarios through the editor for this purpose. time well saved.

Interestingly in a recent game I had with the Russian's I popped a settler with a scout quite early and while moving him to where I wanted, I popped a city.
