got dsl, wanna host full game, super map(30000 sq.) everything optimized by expert

Narz, try that conversion process out, shown in that file on the site, and if it doesnt work, well, only way we can try it is to play, or try to play, so post up here as soon as you configure all the right things. Then we'll go from there.

we are, but it seems certain players have not the commitment to this challenge as i thought, perhaps they need a nudge, and nothing more, we will see.......

well I'm back from holiday now, what is the hold up guys? Narz, did you manage to figure out the conversion process? Lets get underway...

If that is indeed the case, then you as host and uncharacteristicaly quiet emcee, need to get to nudging, shoving, and pushing! Crack that whip Nic!:whipped: I have turned down many offers to play because I don't want to commit to another game with this one looming in the shadows. So I am not getting the play time I desire!! So please, oh verbose one, get those e-mails, private messages, instant messages, and whatever else need be done to get these folks inline and online. :D

I have been lazy. I'll be honest, I hate fiddiling with files and codes and reading instructions just so things work as they should. Coincidentally I had a semi-nightmare about being back in school last night :D

But I will do it :sigh: because I know know one will do it for me...

Damn Sid Meier, don't want to make Civ II scenerios compatable for Mac, huh? Let Narz do all the work... :walks outside grumbling:

- Narz :king:

The text file was no help, I'm at a loss here... Isn't there anyone who has played a scenerio with a Mac user before??

Its homecoming at my alma mater this weekend, so I am headed to Duke for drinking and bad football.

Nic, I hope you werent hoping to start this weekend. Once I am back schedule availability resumes as indicated.

Later friends.

What's an alma mater? Sorry, I intentionally avoid learning about contemporary social practices since they're all the same thing to me; people getting together and yapping standing up on uncomfortable shoes and well-behaved pleasable faces (formal) or a bunch of people talking and drinking in a house or somewhere else sitting down with giddy little giggling faces (casual). That should cover it, but please, enlighten me, maybe there's some tremendous virtual-symphony/game playing/hallucinogenic-group-transcendance experience i might be unaware of....

Relax father, just a potshot at the world.....

As for this latest development, damn the anti-trust laws. So we'd be living under a powerful almost communist-like capitalist regime if we didn't have them but at least we'd all have EXACTLY the same computer, and possibly the same haircut and clothing too, so we'd be complete dorks, but again, a small price to pay for playing on my master gameboard. Minimum wages and tenement living along with no labor union or work-place health regulations? Pleeeaaasssseeee..... you ain't seen Mobile SAM's in action yet! it'd be worth it. 8>

Now though, this is the will of Nicosar. It will be followed:

I want Narz to try and deal with the intricacies of that file and possibly the last one before that, since though I wish it otherwise nobody can do it for him unless they have a mac (I dont, that's for sure, I traded my Imac for a PC from some bum, remember, and without regrets), and Narz, I want you to get on this ASAP, or you will BECOME an ASAP (A Sorry Assed Player) for delaying everyone, even though I respect your efforts on the matter so far. But alas, despite good intentions, we are not playing yet, and if these trends continue, my graphs indicate a serious delay, and this must be fought against. A WAR! A war I SAY! A war against incompatibility and bad programming! But we need YOU! (that means you Narz)

OH! and everyone else, you think you're scott free, for some damn silly reason?!!! Hell NO! The will of Nicosar continues:

I want everyone to look, as often as they think it necessary, to actually find some concrete information on the issue and report it here; post the website up so that Narz doesn't have to spend time looking for these things as well as tinkering with them. I myself believe that manuals and all computer instructions of any sort were most probably written by one-eyed, dyslexic sweatshop monkeys while bathing in mud and picking their own fleas, so let's not torture Narz further by piling too many tasks upon him, deciphering the ancient and elusive, yet incomprehensible, nerd-language is enough.

As for my scenario, I've been playing it just to pass the time slaughtering pitiful computer simiants (I know, it's quite degrading) but also with the reason in mind to catch and iron out any last problems; most of them that I have encountered up to now having nothing to do with the game physics themselves, with only some city improvement and terrain improvement changes which will be documented in detail, I decided, and sent out to everyone. These are just minor perfectionizations but most of the other problems include only partially obscured unit shields, city-garrison flags that cover up too much of the gorgeous city graphics, all just microscopic visual problems and nothing more. I do realize, however, that most of you have probably not even read all of the information or maybe not even looked at them in full at all, and though I could therefore send all of you pictures of my bare ass and get away with it unnoticed, I will not, for honor's sake, though it would be quite hilarious when those foolish people ask in-game what the price of a library is and i tell them to refer to their notes.

As for the game in general, it is a masterpiece, truly. Eisntein ain't got NOTHING on Nicosar, because this game is foremost in all of history as the single most important brilliant work of genius. As I play it, I am refreshed by the movement of units and attempts to veteranize my armies (since barracks are so expensive you will not be able to have instantly-veteran armies except at a great price) take the spotlight in the game ahead of bulding city improvements and keeping up with sciences, which take the backseat as the slowly developing physics of the game and not major events which players must race around. It is beautiful. Also, because of the unit changes, all the units are valuable and you will find yourself building alot of different ones instead of just the few best ones, since units have been divided further inbetween their various classes (infantry, siege, mounted, and so on). Soon you will all see for yourselves why I deserve to be a desert sultan and get his weight in gold every year. I wouldnt want to be that fat though, the AHI doesn't recommend it.

Ok, I got good news and bad news...

The good news is, the scenerio works! When I play in single player mode I can see what I need to see, the units move properly and the science and improvements take the appropriate (for this scenerio at least) time to build.

The bad news is, the graphics are still not completely right, sometimes I am unable to pass through a river so I can only assume it must really be an ocean square. Also, looking at the Civelopedia I can tell the new unit graphics are obviously not quite right. For example, one of the new ships shows it's graphic as the barbarian leader to the 4th power

I will try to edit these files myself with GraphicConverter but at least the scenerio itself is working, though I wonder if it will work properly in an MP game... I will continue to fiddle with the scen. files this weekend and hopefully everything will be perfect by Monday, then we can figure out when to get this show on the road.

BTW, Nico, how did you make a map that big? My version of "Civ II map editor" won't let me make a map bigger than 10,000 squares...

- Narz :king:

There was this utility i downloaded from the CFC that lets you build maps with a limit of 32,767 squares (odd number...), have pop. of over 130 million and have more than 30,000 gold, the last two which i neglected, only using the first tool. If you pass 130,000 million people that just means the number on the display screen dosnt register it, i dont think the computer actually physically limits the growth of your cities, probably, but anyway, if a player is even close to being that big i would worry about the unit limit being broken before anything... And as for the gold, I've always spent all my money before I even had half that much, so that shouldnt be a problem.

As for the rivers, perhaps it is not a glitch; I made some rivers be followed to a certain length by ocean squares interspersed by 'diagonal land crossings' to simulate the navigability of some rivers by boats (which I was allowed to implement because of the larger map) up until they hit an impassable cataract (the end of the ocean squares), but without sacrificing the crossibility of it by land units since a river body of water is still a land feature, which means that along most rivers' courses there is a line of ocean squares placed mostly diagonally to each other so that boats can traverse them but also land units can pass it at very frequent 'diagonal breaks'. This does seem a bit odd, that both ships and land units could cross each others' paths like that, and so that is why, I believe, they took it out for civ 3 so that only land units can cross such diagonal ocean/land squares and boats cannot, but civ 3 is plagued and a faulty P.O.S. and they forgot that my river systems, which they apparently never thought to do, was the perfect reason for having such a useful device as this.

Is this what you are experiencing? There is supposed to be a
line of diagonal ocean squares with actual rivers running along side them and then past them when the 'ocean rivers' end, but which can be crossed at many points, but if you cannot cross the bigger rivers, the ocean rivers, at all, then there is indeed a problem.....

As for the units..... so... do you see any of the new unit graphics, or just the old ones? I remember before that when we played you said you did see my new units but that the phalanx looked like pikemen (which made sense since a missing rules.txt would do that) but since the rules didnt work and you still saw pikemen for phalanx that means you must of had my new graphics, right?.... or else you wouldve just seen the old pikemen where they should be, which would correspond with the default rules.... But if you saw a barbarian for one of the new ships that would mean that you are not seeing the new graphics, then, since most of the empty slots where an editor can make new units is filled by barbarian figures as the default.

So, try the procedures again for unit conversion and make sure everything else works properly (but without revealing TOO much of the map in your efforts I hope...) and remember about the rivers..... strange about the units though, you did say you saw them before and in fact that in our game they were the ONLY new graphics you saw, which is quite ironic, considering..... goodluck Narz, we all appreciate the technical drudgery you've performed so far and we urge you on still though, because just a little tiny bit more of this mundane tinkering will land us on the greatest civ game of all!

And let us know if you follow the directions perfectly but the desired effects are still unfound, because then new methods must be searched for and brought to you.

Well Nico ol' buddy, I've been working on this, the converter I downloaded didn't do the most spelndid job and my computer froze three times so I tried to convert the files manually. This was my end result :
NicoScener.gif

Is this how its supposed to look?? I have a feeling its inverted or something... I hate this s***! Hopefully I will be able to play without the graphics or perhaps someone has some ideas to get them working.

Nic, let me know when you're online so we can try out a two player game with the scenerio because I have a feeling that things may get more complicated with someone else running the scenerio than when I run it directly on my machine...

Perhaps we can test it out tomorrow afternoon if you're online. I have my MP tourny from 11AM-2 or 2:30PM (EST) so if you're online right at 2:30 or 3 perhaps we can do a test run... Let me know.

- Narz :king:

that's totally fu*%ed up the @$$..... i dont know what to say, i see none of my beautiful graphics except an evil warrior, messenger of Sauron the enemy of the free peoples of Middle Earth, dressed in a black cloud coming to take poor little psychedelic Toledo which looks nothing like my cities would.... but otherwise, i think we had better find another way to do this, and forgive me Narz, but I must start to look, (only LOOK now, relax) for replacement players in case this does not work out at all....

This is truly disheartening, apparently the background 'pink and grey' colors which are translated as a transparent alpha layer (graphics industry linguo) into the game are different on the Mac and therefore some ungodly weirdness has arisen......

Soooooo... I dont know. The terrain, rivers and resources all look the same as the original, but WORSE even, and no progress has really been made except for Angwar, captain of the black riders of Mordor, coming to dry off in Toledo after getting dehorsed in the river (dont worry, I'm a true Tolkien fan, i think Peter Jackson should be castrated and put in a little rocketship to go live on the moon alone..... for that pompous display of hollywoodism destroying a work of genius.....BAH! replacing Glorfindel with arwen, I should take up ARMS! "Noro lim, Asfothel, noro lim" those were HIS lines, you filthy New Zealand Bastard!!!).

Oh, the game, yeah, you KNOW, Narz, that I am sitting here with admiration and amiable respect for you, though I would still like to play you through a whole game some time if not this one to see if you are not merely a master of building ;) , since you clearly are devoted enough to play to go through such drivelous procedures, which despite your noble mentality only make the original game worse, and in the end, we are no closer to playing.

So.... where do we go from here? Ill look for more information, but, the prospects looking grim, it seems one needs a degree from MIT just to convert a few godammned game files!

FUKK GOOD LANGUAGE AND PROPER NOUNS, IM PISSED. ITS BEEN A MONTH NOW!!! DAMN YOU STEVE JOBS!!! DAMN YOU ANTI-TRUST DO-GOODER MOTHERFU%$ERS!!! AND DAAMMNN YOU TO HELLLLLL PETER JACKSOOONNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!

Nicosar does not use stupid little faces, by the way, that winking stain on my angry piece about many fu*$ed up things wasnt intentional: i put a ";" followed by a ")", which wouldve been more subtle but the damn website translated automatically into that abominable sticky-faced blemish that only belongs on the backpacks of small japanese girls.

Listen Nico, I may be able to play without the graphics files... of course that didn't work b4 but b4 my scenerio file was messed up too (it now seems to be working properly)... I regret that I will not get to see your nice graphics in action but if I am able to play without them I can accept that.

Like I said before, sometime when you and me are both online at the same time, send me a messege and we can test out the scenerio to see if it works and perhaps do some experimenting without having the five (is it still 5?) others waiting impatiently for things to work out right.

If all fails I suppose I will step aside and let another play in place of me. And I would be glad to play you a full game one on one Nico, either with the original rules or an edited version that we can both agree on.

BTW, you're slow science and longer city growth and building times are not so bad in practice though I still think your game, once underway, will take quite awhile. I also like the idea of barbarian cities.

I plan to continue playing Civ II MP for quite awhile and to host a couple more "tournaments" after my current one ends, even if this does not work out, I'm sure our paths will cross again. Of course, I hope this one does work out and will carry on attempting to figure out these irratating problems until all hope is lost!

- Narz :king:

I like your use of the word "drivelous", is that really a word. I gotta find a way to use that in conversation sometime, seriously!

No, no.... its all going down, the whole world is falling a part, i feel myself hurling down towards a black hole at the center of a spiraling storm of chaos and confusion, no gravity, no orientation, just madness.....

....ok, 'drivelous' ISN'T a word but 'drivelingly' is, and so many nouns turn into adjectives in so many ways, its hard to know which way they'll go: it could be 'drivelous' or drivelant' or 'drivelsome' or 'drivellied' but no, its 'drivelingly', that's fine, but one cannot know all of these suffixes and attachments even if he knows all the words in the language, so most of the time one must guess based on his sense of the phonetics specific to the language and structure but this often goes awry..... but at least, i always check any word im merely guessing about before writing it in more formal papers, where such errors have no excuse.

Welll, it doesnt look like we're even going to have 7 players, and if Narz is forced to withdraw, a most malicious prospect, then we will be reduced to 5 again and a whole continent, in which there is a most beautifully laid out terrain I'd hate to give up to the clutches of the insidious 'AI' (horrible movie by the way), will be sacrificed for the sake of human opposition from the start....but, i will do some more scouting around, there is deity who said he might have wanted to play but then withdrew..... but maybe we can find some more determined players.... there's a few bragging would-be champions at Apoly too, and despite their defamation by a crowd of gathering elite-bashers, these are just the kind of players who give the most challenge, even though they may not be true masters of the game such as myself, tried and true and rightfully so.

-The Gameplayer-

Well even if its not a word, "drivelous" has the best ring to it.

Seriously though, if someone else can figure out this terrain problem (it doesn't show up on my map, i.e. : I can't see what I'm doing) great, but if not then sadly after all this I guess I'm out.

I really can't spend more time trying to figure this out, I have very pressing matters to attend to in real life, such as tracking down my van's title papers : I have a van without a Title which basically means I don't have a van. My advice everyone, never make an impluse purcahses in excess of $5, if you're too lazy to figure out all the details don't buy it. Shoot!

On a lighter note, I will be online around 10PM to play an MP game if anyone is interested.

Damn, 5 players again. I know, I know, I should've kicked his sorry Mac-using hide a long time ago and this game couldve been well under way, though still quite ancient, but....well, little ol' Nico's got a heart. Besides, It might've been possible, though i had my doubts of course, as is common with me and modern technology nowadays (ALL modern tech.... check your car, if it runs perfectly fine, let me know, but I doubt that too unless it came out of the shop yesterday) and so this was expected but nonetheless I wanted to give Narz a sense of comradarie among fellow players, even though as soon as I became aware of his Macness I practicaly considered him withdrawn by technological default, and this was just about 10 days ago....so I have been fair, despite this announcement. Well, whatever, im still rather reluctant to play with only 5 players, so far its me, dr eamer, the general, the father and hartster, and id really like to have at least 6 players.... Of course i also dont want to delay this game anymore, though if I had known this about Macs I wouldve put it as a playing condition from the start, which I will on the next tournament, and we might've been playing for quite some time now.

Yes, I know, it's been more than a month...live and learn.

Narz, I am truly sorry about your inability to play. As soon as I figure out a way to take my screenshots and post them up then I will begin a new thread, as I have done at Apoly, though this time the thread, which will still be called NICOSAR'S MASTER CHALLENGE, will be christened with pictures, perhaps even various sequences of pictures to explain strategies or whatnot, and dialogue and results and so forth. Then, Narz, when you see that thread, you will truly lament this incompatibility, but I will not do it just to spite your Macness, it will be for everyone to see who once had no idea what sort of games a master plays. Maybe then some activity will be generated to figure out your problem which im sure many share so that they can play this scenario of mine, with or without me (though, I AM a vital component to the beauty of the game, since gameplay is all that really matters and I play with a fire that's hard to match), and so this thread will be more to your benefit than anything. I have searched for solutions to this problem but the ones that you already received seemed to me the most comprehensive, and so I am at a loss on this issue. we all bid you happy civing otherwise, and maybe someday we will cross paths in the battlefield, as I still hope to do!

Now,as for the game..... I WANT at least one more player, and I will GET one more player, at the LEAST, because The Blessed Lord (who doesnt really exist except in our minds) KNOWS that Nicosar deserves a full game.....just for being so damn sexy.

Seriously though, ask your fellow players, message people you think are both worhty and willing to play in this game, the ones in your ICQ list, the ones you know and talk to...as for me, i have already done this, and I will not, can not, post a million threads everywhere begging people to play. I have done this, the contacting of people, with not much response, and i have put up this thread, which despite its more than 2000 hits has only garnered 10 players or so during its course, but which has had many more visitors than just this number, since I, the host, who come here most often (except maybe for harster in his first days) have only done so perhaps 50-60 times, and all of this is all i can do for now. I am asking you then, to try and find two, just two players, to enrich all the game more and make it completely devoid of any AI, the scourge of civ.

I will try also, of course, but in my own little ways, nothing so grand as hunting for masters or posting ads, but nevertheless, whatever efforts shall bring, the game will start in no more than a couple days, maybe 3 if the schedule warrants it, but the game is finally, decisively and irrefutably close at hand.

Once this game begins, you will only see the present and the future, for all this monotonous idleness of the present and constant disapointment of players leaving and other problems will all have seemed nothing in relation to the prize that is playing this game, and it will be thought of merely as a test for the unfirm and fickle who did not realize the tremendous benefits of just a little patience.

I'll see you all soon, I guess! But by the way, I recommend you print out ALL of the information I gave you, the techs, the units and the rules and honor code, or else you will either be lost without them or you will break rules left and right and then consider them frivolous in dissent simply because you would rather argue than admit to not having known them. Especially the units though, since the tactics have been changed, for the better, of course, as I keep stressing, and you will not be able to use units like you could in normal civ: your options are wider, your units are better belanced, your variety of strategy is greater, and the better players should do fine under these changed but still superior conditions than the lesser ones who would complain of their unfamiliarity, for which they anyway have no excuse given the thorough info and ample time which they had to study it .
