Well, after a pair of really good games on King I decided that that was my level. Well...maybe it isn't. I've just lost two straight games as Japan at the hands of massive AI attacks (you know...the classic, "It's 125 turns into the game but EVERY AI is going to declare war on you!"). Now, I don't know how I feel about this. Sure the computer had WAAAAAY more units than it could ever have afforded, and I suppose they were taking advantage of that strength.

The first game I had a really weak military and they rushed me with warriors and archers and took out my entire Civ...fair play. The second time it did that thing where I was BEST friends with Alexander from the very start....and he then proceeds to attack me and take me out (not before suffering horrible casualties to my catapults and horsemen though ;))

The ONLY thing that made me jump out of my seat and start cursing was when a companion cav with TWO hit-points took my city which had maybe 3-5 hit points. C'MON!!! The way they calculate city-defence is all screwed up. Sure they say it fights at full strength all the time but if that were true why have I seen so many melee attacks against cities where the attacker is dwarfed in terms of strength but the battle ends with both sides taking equal damage?

Anyways....not much to say here. I'm sorta glad I've been beat, but I do wish it wasn't by the world declaring war on me for no reason and sending wave after wave after wave of soldiers that a human couldn't possibly pay for until they finally broke through my defences.

Best game I've had yet, I have 4 cities and I'm stuck in the middle of huge Aztec and Ottoman empires. The whole continent is at war.

Notice my city defence values. I am Oligarchy and have Himeji Castle too.

Walls matter. Castles are awesome. Emperor level on large map btw.

I just tried my first game on King. Washington just took half of the continent and just launched an invasion on the other continent. Meanwhile, I just can't beat him because he has all the oil/aluminum in the god damn map, and I can't even expand because he also has most of the happiness resources. And due to a failed attempt at a specialist economy, I have no good production city. I just don't know if I should carry the game any further =(

go for a space race victory or something :)

You can see the musketman I have to the east of Bursa got a hiding. Monty has given me peace for about 20 turns the whole game, he's just too big. My istanbul border is solid enough, and I'm sinking everything that tries to come over the sea.

It's a game going nowhere in terms of victory, but it's pretty cool to just hold off wave after wave of the Aztecs. ;)

Was my point from the get go. But I think (no, I'm sure) I screwed up the specialist economy, so I got a mediocre amount of beakers (don't have as much land as washington) and I have no good production city. I want to press on and try a comeback, but Washington is double my score and I'm afraid I'll just waste time on this game, instead of trying a new one and doing things right.

I like king alot. In single player it's my go-to if I want to try something different or just play a 4-5 hour relaxed game. Anything below just is boring and gives no satisfaction to win.

And Alex is a backstabber like August and Ram. Oda is a much better ally, or Washington/Zetian better still.

King is my difficulty of choice too. It is challenging enough so I can't just dominate every civilization as I please and cruise to victory, but it's not so difficult that I'm constantly defending wave after wave of AI attacks. I have about a 60% winning percentage on King, which isn't bad I guess.

what map type is that

It could just be the leaders you're playing against in each particular game.

Take a look at the files in the %CIV5%\Assets\Gameplay\XML\Leaders directory. Be wary of anyone who has a large bias (say, 7 or more) for MAJOR_CIV_APPROACH_WAR (likely to DOW you), MAJOR_CIV_APPROACH_DECEPTIVE (likely to be your best friend right up to the moment that they DOW you), or FLAVOR_EXPANSION (likely to be generally annoying). E.g., Oda has values 7,7,8 for these three, making him one of the worst of the bunch, Washington has 5,7,7 making him middling bad, while Gandhi is 3,3,3 making him a pretty safe neighbor most of the time.

Replacing a few Oda-types with a few Gandhi-types is equivalent to dropping the difficulty level by one, and vice-versa.
