Gotm 1-14?

I was interested in toying around with the past GotM entries and possibly joining in on the fun. I noticed from reading the description of GotM 15 that there was a major standards change, and I see that 1-14 are no longer available (not that I can find). I was wondering if there were still copies of the zip/sav files floating around somewhere. I have this compulsion to have complete sets of things and this is now one of them. :)

On a related note, in the Civ2 GotM collection, #s 28, 30-33, and 36-39 have dead links to the original saves. But I should probably post on the Civ2 board for this...

I've played most of them. I think I've got the saves out there. At last check they were still available on-line. I'll take a quick look around and get back to you.

I tried to track them down a little while ago as a result of a previous request, but had no luck. I think your best bet is if someone has old copies on their hard drive. If anyone wants to volunteer one or more of the game start files I'll happily restore them to our current server and make them available.

Once upon a time I had them all on a backup. If I can find the disks, I'll e-mail them to you.

I'd like to second that "Awesome. Thanks." I was just looking for these GOTMs, saw that the GOTM server is down and happened to find this thread. Thanks Redbad!

Wow big bump.

I was just thinking about finding an old gotm to play while we wait for the next new game. Not one of the modded squid games but one I played when I was still figuring out how to play this game. Anyone remember when we stopped the heavily modded games? And I assume the old starts still exist in this forum. I will have to look later.

The start files from GOTM 15 onwards are all available on the GOTM web site.

Near the bottom of the left hand side-bar on every page is a drop-down menu. Select any game and click the Game Details button to open the Game Release page complete with game details and the download buttons.

We started using substantial graphics and resources mods during Cracker's era, around GOTM 17. We stopped using them with GOTM 32.

You can also see a gallery of maps and basic game settings for all the finished games from 14 onwards here.

Yes, that is a big bump all right. :)

I am now thinking about picking up CivIV, but I think I want to work on building up some CivIII skill first. It's a damned addictive game, but I find it a little overwhelming toward the modern era.

Guess I need to get better at wiping out competitors in the early turns.... :scan:

This is oh so true. So much work goes into the late phases of the game and for what? Saving one turn researching Atomic Theory? Getting Hoover Dam completed 1 turn earlier in your 20K town, so that you get a boost of 0.01% of what is required for a 20K win?

The only way I'll do any of those things again is if the conditions (civ traits, starting position, etc.) are absolutely perfect. But I don't think the staff will (or should) oblige me. They must not undermine the all-time-fastest-and-highest table by making the conditions too favourable. Not after almost 200 G/COTMs.

Still, some games that are equally favorable to the old ones are more than welcome. I've had a look at GOTM1 and I'm wondering if perhaps with all the methods known today it could yield an extremely early domination date. Has anyone played it out recently?

Overall, I wonder if there have been any easier games in the past than GOTM103 (Iroquois) where the previous conquest and domination records were beaten.

I am actually playing through GOTM1 right now, but I am hardly a good measure of how fast it can be won. I am at 420 AD and have taken a stop for about 24 hours to think about things.

I have reached a point where I realize I am not getting where I want to go, so I am about to undergo an extensive analysis of everything and develop a new plan. Effectively I've gotten where I am by just kind of winging it rather than undergoing any real strategy.

In the early going, I was cranking out warriors and later immortals, because I had a feeling I would need them. Somewhere around 1000 BC, Montezuma got uppity on me and had to be taught a lesson. He didn't learn it the first time through, however, so I had to teach him again.

I am now paused after making peace, and realize I need to heal, retool my military, and then start a massive campaign of killing Montezuma, because he's just annoying and in my way. In the meantime, he is working on Shaka and Hammurabi for me, so that's a good thing. Makes life easier.
