GOTM 12 First Spoiler

Reading Requirements:
  1. Have reached at least 0 AD.
  2. Have contact with at least 3 other civilizations.

Posting Restrictions
  1. Please do not discuss events past 500 AD.
  2. No screenshots or discussions of events not on the starting continent.

Settled where I was (do 99% of the time - I'll only move settler if I see a better spot straight away).

BW first for chopping workers and settlers; then Hunting/Archery for Skirmishers (did make one scout to explore the country).
Ag, pottery, AH for worker upgrades.
Then Metal work in order to build forges.
Then aimed for Alphabet, then Construction for Cat's.
Now I'm aiming to get Maces.

4000BC - Timbukto in start spot
2680BC - Djenne 5W of start (Copper & Wheat)
1160BC - Kumblai Selei on Marble to get hroses and another wheat
800BC - Gao for wheat and bananas
All cities, except capital, go forge, library, barracks and then go 100% Military. I know all the best players don't build a library but I find they are great for culture points and allow one GS.

My military is huge and the French will cop it sweet (I owe them revenge from GOTM11 anyway! :D )

The screen shot is from 200BC as I forgot to save at 500AD :(

The red circle is my military build up of 8 skirmishers :)

Seeing as we had Mali, on Prince, I was thinking I should really go for a cultural victory as this would be my best chance in a while. Especially when I saw the second gold hills - Timbuktu was going to be a production powerhouse, with enough income at the start to nab the religions! I know the traditional route of cultural victory is cottage spam, but the terrain wasn't really suited well to that so I went for my preferred cultural method, builder spam - get all the wonders ASAP. So I didn't intend on using the financial trait much, but the spiritual would be useful in getting temples (not for my three legendary cities - but all the others so I can build cathedrals).

Tech/religionwise I got archery and animal husbandry before going for polytheism and founding Hinduism(2560 BC). I then slipped in Bronze working(1880 BC) before I founded Confuscianism(1320BC) and used the oracle to get Civil Service(925BC). Then I went for the arts techs (Alphabet Literature Drama Music - discovered in 200AD getting the artist) but on the way I founded Theology with a GP (500BC). Later, I managed to trade a few techs with Washington to get Calendar, Iron Working and Monarchy(225 AD). Then I got a second GP and was well on my way to discovering Islam at 500AD.

Buildings was pretty hectic. Worker/archer/stonehenge(2120 BC)/archer/settler/settler/Oracle (925 BC, for CS) in Timbuktu. Dejenne was founded to use all those floodplains and hills (more production), and Kumbi Saleh to the north to use fish, copper, corn and banana (put a few cottages there to keep things ticking over). So by 1200BC my candidates were in place. Dejenne built worker/archer/Parthenon(275 BC)/Theatre/Library/Great Library(200 AD)/Forge/Granary, while Kumbi built worker/archer/Sistine Chapel(175 AD)/Forge (Sistine takes a while yknow!). In the meantime, Timbuktu was busy building archers galleys and settlers to settle the islands, as well as a few monasteries, a temple and a library (Getting a temple before 0AD is important for the doubling). In 'other city' news, Gao was founded to the NE on our continent in 200 BC just S of the corn.

No problems with barbs or wars, contacts all friendly, the aim now is to get 9 cities founded, as many wonders as I can and then get spreading religions everywhere.

Here's me as of 75AD.

I settled on the spot, and was pretty happy to find the second gold. That was an even better start that the test games i played!

Went Hunting --> AH --> BW --> Writing --> Myst --> Meditation --> Priesthood --> COL --> Fishing --> Pottery --> Alphabet (which i got before 1000BC).

GP (scientist built academy in Tombouctou) in around 1400 BC and Oracle built in 1360 (CS Slingshot).

I built worker/warrior/warrior/settler (chopped)/library (partially chopped)/oracle (partially chopped)/settler and great library a little later (built in 225BC).

Founded 5 cities before AD (4000BC Tomboucton, 2480BC Djenné, 1600BC Kumib Saleh, 725BC Gao, 700BC Walata), Walata being around where Tours is located in your pictures. Actually, i had to raize a French city first with 3 skirmishers (louis built his city actually in front of my settler, i was kind of angry). That was a very short war. We made peace immediately afterwards.

Tombouctou was a super science / production city.

I declared again war on Louis in 175 AD. I had maces, axes and a couple of catapults. I took Paris in 250AD (GA from Music stopped immediatly any rebellion), Marseille in 325AD, Lyon in 350AD, Orleans in 375AD and Tours in 500AD. I kept all of them. By 500 AD, Louis had only one city left. I knew at this time i was to go straigth after Washington afterwards. But that will be for the next spoiler...

In the meantime i was also preparing colonization of the islands north of Tombouctou.

If was also beginning to notice that there was a lot of land on this map...

edit: i watched my replay to tell the right dates

This is a game where I feel I have been playing faster than ever. Maybe it's the Normal speed that causes me to lose track of how long it should be. The starting three cities I feel were excellent... despite the fact they need a border pop, I love them to DEATH!

Thanks to my practice games with Mali, I feel I can go for either Domination or Diplomacy on this one. We'll see if it works out.

Initial build for capital was Worker, Settler, Settler, Warrior, Warrior, Worker

Cities:
Timbuktu (in place, 4000BC)
Djenne (2N of the wheat, north of the flood plains, 2800BC)
Kumbi Saleh (1N of the Bronze, 1E of the fish, 2320BC)
Gao (ENE of the horses, 780BC)
Marseilles (captured from French, 1E of the banana, 400AD)

Wonders and Selected Techs and GP:
Code of Laws 1120BC
Oracle/Civil Service 900BC
Calendar 300BC
Great Library 200BC
Great Scientist 150BC
Machinery 1AD
Parthenon 125AD
Great Scientist 125AD
Engineering 200AD
National Epic 350AD
Optics 450AD
Great Prophet 450AD...
Kong Miao 475AD
Philosophy 475AD (via scientist)

Strategy and gameplay:
I forgone the "Skirmisher Rush" because I saw the Bronze. I set up an early Academy on the capital by running two scientists in Djenne to get the Great Scientist before the capital ever pops the Great Prophet. I got another Great Scientist in the capital soon, grabbed Philo. Third GP was a Great Prophet which who build the Confused Shrine. I forsee a diplomatic victory attempt. Or failing that, World Domination!

Time to go circumnavigate the world soon.

Right now, I am attacking France's northern cities with my shiny new Macemen.

What's funny in this game is that Louis declared war on me... then shortly, on Washington! I haven't ever seen the AI declare war on two enemies at once!

This is a really fun game so far. Good leader pick with a wonderful starting area. Under these conditions any victory you want is possible.

By 500 AD I had achieved the CS slingshot with The Oracle and was at war with Washington.

I had also met Louis and Mao.

Spoiler to 500 AD.

Denniz, thats where i put kumbi too. When i put a lighthouse there, it became my GP farm. I also did a CS slingshot. Built alot of wonders and went after Louis with axes. Took all his land in my second war with maces and cats.

I got a lot of my GPs from Kumbi, too. Although, in hindsight, I didn't use the land in the gap between it and Djenne(sp?) too well.

Well, this GOTM is going much better for me than WOTM2 did...

I came into this game planning on a Space Race victory, which I think I'll still aim for just because it's a little late for me to change my goal to a military one. Diplo remains a possibility because everyone likes me except Washington.

Timbuktu was founded in place, the second gold found beforehand(thanks to moving my warrior 1E). I planned to go hunting>archery then BW because the last few GOTM/WOTM didn't have close metal and I didn't want to get burned early(a result of WOTM2, I was much more militarily cautious, perhaps overprotective this game). My initial capital build was warrior>scout>worker>settler>warrior>skirmisher>skirmisher>settler

However, my first built warrior was killed by an attacking lion 4 turns after being built. Luckily my scout had better luck, surviving an encounter with both a lion and a wolf in the same turn, 3 turns after being built lol. He died 10 turns later though(beat one lion, lost to another in a 2 turn period, lots of animals this game). I got BW and found that copper so close to me, but since I have access to skirmishers, I am not too inclined to rush for it immediately. Of more import to me is the marble I've found next to wheat and flood plains!

I began a worker after my scout since I had just reached size 3 and estimated that I'd finish the worker shortly after BW. I was right, BW came in and AH then Agriculture were taken, with a couple forests being chopped to get my first settler out quickly.

Djenne was founded next to the FP, marble, and wheat in 2440BC and immediately began work on a skirmisher(I planned on rushing it in 8 turns once it grew to size 2.

In 2200BC, I began researching Mysticism to attempt to get the Oracle built, Timbuktu reached size 4, finished its 2nd skirmisher, started another settler, and Djenne rushed its skirmisher. It also marked my first foreign encounter worth mentioning, I met America in 2320BC, saw an American worker unescorted building a camp on Ivory, and did a worker steal on America in 2200BC. I didn't expect to get it home, since I wanted to keep the warrior around to slow Washington down and hurry the end of the war. I decided to keep the worker hanging around the periphery of American lands until I saw a french warrior walking around, then my worker tagged along with France until America was willing to end the war. I then met up with the exploring frenchman, and excorted the worker home.

In 1600BC, Kumbi Saleh was founded in the same place Denniz founded it, between the hill and lake, and two turns later Priesthood is discovered, giving me access to the Oracle. At which time Djenne begins building it, with some chopping help from my native worker.

At this point I'm teching pretty quickly thanks to the pigs in Timbuktu allowing me to work both gold mines already. I begin researching writing in 1360BC and finish in 1240BC! Confuscianism is founded in Djenne(I expected Gao-founded 925BC- to be the holy city) in 800BC, with the Oracle finishing in 725BC giving me a CS slingshot(the capital was too good to pass up Bureaucracy this early).

I sent the missionary to Timbuktu, where I promptly built a monastery for the science boost, then built a missionary to convert Louis XIV. 525BC sees my stolen worker finally arrive home. His first job? connect the copper! lol It was so unimportant to my early plans I still hadn't connected it.

450BC saw the Alphabet created, though tech trading didn't take place until after Poly(2 turns) and fishing(1 turn) had been researched. Sailing was traded for Meditation and Poly in 250BC. Literature was researched in a mere 100 years(350BC-250BC), as was Mathematics(225BC-125BC).

Walata was founded in 125BC on the coast E of Kumbi Saleh mainly to prevent France or Washington, who had run into each other, from gaining more territory I considered mine. I started building a mid-sized force of skirmishers in 250BC to take over a few barb cities I had seen, unfortunately, China, France, and America all took them before I could. Luckily however, I had enough surplus troops from that short buildup that when America declared war in 25BC for revenge, I was able to stop them cold.

I lost two skirmishers and killed 3 american archers in 1AD as America tried to take over Gao. In 25AD, I killed 3 american archers and lost zero troops when America lost the city of Zapotec to my marauding Skirmishers. I then went on the offensive, with construction being discovered in 75AD.

100AD saw Calendar traded for from Persia, the Great Library completed in Timbuktu, and the first catapult going into production. I also built my first boat, loading it with a skirmisher and settler to found a colony in far away Hokkaido(what I just now decided to call the northern island above Kumbi Saleh)

175AD saw the knowledge of Horseback Riding being filtered throughout Malinese lands. Niani is founded in 225AD on Hokkaido, whereupon my galley starts exploring to hopefully get a circumnavigation bonus. And 325AD sees the Americans lose another 3 archers to the malinese skirmishers, as Washington's attempt to retake Zapotec is repelled.

375AD sees Malinese troops take over Boston, lose Boston, then watch in dismay as the French enter the fray in order to take Boston for themselves!

Plato is born in 400AD in Timbuktu and starts his Academy, and the year 500AD ends with Malinese catapults bombarding the walls of New York while swarms of experiences skirmishers and a few green axemen march around the city blowing horns(hey, we're not Jewish, gotta have some backup for the horns just in case).

stats at 580AD:
@100%-research: 150 beakers, net income: 49, 8 cities(6 founded), 9 skirmishers, 7 catapults, 2 axemen, 1 HA(lost 4 skirmishers, 2 axemen, 1 HA, 0 catapults!), killed 15 archers, and built Oracle and Great Library.

I also have a tech lead of 4-7 techs over everyone I know(5 civs known), with Theology, Philosophy, and Currency the only techs others have that I don't.
Rankings:
GNP-2
MFG-1
Food-3
Soldiers-1(what?)
Land Area-2
Pop-4

Addendum: I just realized that other than me, Louis XIV is the only civ that can research feudalism...perhaps I should consider a military victory, seeing as how I've managed to become #1 in power and have a tech advantage with cats, skirmishers, and HA against archers and spearmen.

Comparing with the last really tough GOTMs, I feel this one should go swiftly. I haven't made my mind yet but I'm considering going cultural for my 1st time ever. I might even go read some related strategy threads. Or I might get lazy and go the beaten path of space race or diplo.

Warrior 1nW, nothing found, so Settled in place. I wonder if anyone didn't.
Early Tech path: Hunt/AH/BW/writ/fish/arch then CS slingshot techs. Before Oracle was done, some cheap stuff like Agri,Sailing,Masonry.
Early build:Worker/scout/warrior/settler. Scout did pop 2 huts in the tundra area, a warrior and some gold.

1360BC was a fine year: SH in Djenne, Oracle (CS) in Timbuktu. Wonder-wise, I also built GLight in 450BC (Timbu), Colossus in 250BC (Djenne). These ones should help me in terms of commerce, I plan to run a coastal-oriented economy.

Latest tech news: Machinery in 300BC, Construction in 175BC. Hmmm, I think it's time to start building some troops in my 4 cities... In 125BC all I had was 4 warriors, 1 scout and a galley! OK, in 1 AD we 4 cities with barracks, running theocracy, which should produce nothing but macemen and cats for a while. (that is, if I can keep the builder inside me silent, which I doubt!). :crazyeye:

Oh, yes, almost forgot to talk about our neighbours. Lou is confucian like us, he loves us. GW (Buddhist), dislikes us. Mao is cautious, but we have open borders. I also met 2 other guys from distant lands. As I write this, I was thinking going GW first, but on 2nd thoughts, Lou has only archers/spearmen and he's on our way to GW. You know, I hate to backstab a friend... Wait, he's just an AI, go for him!

I settled in place. My initial city production was Worker>Barracks (Inc)>scout>Settler>Barracks>Skirmisher>worker>Settler>skirmisher. Once I discovered Marble, I decided to go for a cultural victory (I was leaning that way from my practice game anyhow). Stayed at peace during this period.

After an adventurer win (although late in the game) in GOTM 11, on Monarch, felt I had to go with contender for this Prince game in GOTM 12.

On the road again, so just a comment on my start for now ...

Had been thinking of settling in place, or maybe going 2 south to settle on the spice. After the warrior 1 E move revealed the second gold hill, that ruled out the 2S move. Thought I would go up the 1 NE hill with the settler. Bingo, found the fish. So I decided to settle 1 S of the fish, to leave the pigs for a second city, figuring that a more centered capital might be a good idea. The copper being right there was a nice bonus.

Did anyone else climb the hill, and end up settling to get the fish for the two gold hills?

At the start, my plan is to go for domination (in that tortoise-like way that I am most used to).

More to come when I am back at the game computer.

I did the same thing and settled 1S of the fish. This worked well for me since this city had both the fish and the 2 gold (and later finding the copper beside it was a nice bonus!).

Because of the fish, I researched Fishing first, then went the Hunting/Archery route, followed by Bronze Working. The capital turned into a commerce dream with the fish and gold all in the same city.

Also discovered early that Louie XVI was very close by, and Washington was right beside him, so with my next settlers I tried to grab land to the East as far as I could, then settled the western peninsula on the mountain SW of the original starting position.

Doing OK in the game so far: Washington is not happy, and has declared war against me, but has nothing to match skirmishers and axes. I probably should go after France, even though they are very friendly right now. They are 'in the way' of future expansion. :)

Next GOTM I will get some screenies, plus take better notes, but in short, I researched CoL to convert to Confucianism, and was also successful with the CS slingshot. That is a nice advantage that will be more difficult to achieve in Warlords, so I should enjoy it while it's still available in 'Vanilla Civ IV'.

@goodenuf: are you using the autolog feature in the HOF mod? If so, then you may already have notes (you can set the detail in options screen), but detail depends on what you choose. There is a thread titled "autolog warning ..." that has some detail about how to use the autolog. Never take notes by hand again ...

Challenger (well, it is Prince level :) )

I was looking at the list of Techs available for various Great People, and thought that trying for some Great Prophets early on would be interesting to do, trying for CS. This seemed a good game to attempt this, especially with the level at Prince.

Founded in place So started on Mysticism and then Polytheism (3320 BC), using an unmined Gold for help.

Next, wanted to get the Pigs useful, so Agriculture and Animal Husbandry (2520 BC), and the Worker I'd finished just a few turns earlier was ready to pasture the pigs.

Wheel (roads to connect the Gold I was about to mine), Mining (to get the Gold) and BronzeWorking (slavery, copper and chopping!, in 1680 BC).

Timbuktu meanwhile, after a few scouting Warriors and the Worker, just completed Stonehenge in 1840 BC; the GProphet points could now start accumulating.

Masonry, IronWorking and Fishing (1120 BC); Djenne is founded on the SE river getting Marble, Wheat and Cattle within fat cross (1240 BC).

Time to get the other Religious Techs out of the way: Priesthood (want the Oracle), Meditation and Monotheism (850 BC) put me on the doorstep to Code of Laws. Meanwhile my 3rd and last city so far is founded in 975 BC, Kumbi Saleh, getting Bananas, Fish, Bronze and Wheat in the fat cross (same place to the NE, coastal and on the lake, that several others have used).

One nice thing about the early religion and Stonehenge - these other cities rapidly have their radius expanded gaining useful territory and more space.

Duh moment #1. I want Code of Laws and CS, so I think I can skip Theology in the GProphet free Tech sequence by not learning Writing. Too bad its a requirement for Code of laws! (Duh!)

So next is Pottery and Writing (725 BC). I already have Open Borders with China (who apparently learned Writing earlier), and I sign them with America. Next with France. For some reason Louis signs, then declares on me the next turn! At this point I'm building Oracle in Timbuktu; perhaps he was also and knew I was (in his AI manner) and was trying to disrupt it. I don't know.

So we've been at war for a long time, and he insists I give him Djenne for peace. As if! I had just hooked the Copper up, so I started popping Axemen and have been fending him off reasonably well. RNG has been very 'R' - I lost an Axemen on a hill to a Chariot, but later on the same hill, another Axemen successfully defeated 3 Chariots in one round! (Looking at the Log, 2 of the chariots were wounded already) I've pushed a few units forward and done some pillaging but at this point I think I'll pull back and wait for Maces.

Oracle was completed in 525 BC, and Theology taken as Free Tech (Djenn is the holy city for Christianity). Moses was born in 425 BC. I learn Code of Laws in 400 BC (KS is the holy city) and Moses gives me 1066 beakers towards Civil Service; learned 3 turns later with a little more research in 300 BC.

Duh moment #2: you've got to Quarry the Marble to get Marble! Mining gets you shields but not marble. Well, I've rarely had access to Marble or Stone, and the space was pillaged by the French anyway, so it had to be reworked.

Alphabet was learned in 75 BC, and that is it up to 1 AD. I traded Code of Laws for Mathmatics, and Math for Sailing and Hunting. Don't have Archery yet. I'm up CS, Alphabet and Theology to everyone, CoL to most. Contacts with France, America and China, and a 4th civ that suddenly popped up with a trade table. I have no idea how that contact occurred; I didn't see any of their units near my units, nor have I seen any of their territory. Very strange.

So I was able to use the Great Prophet to help out with CS, with a bit of delay compared to some of the other games. Along the way I've founded 3 religions. Timbuktu has Stonehenge and Oracle and is well on the way to completing Parthenon. I can feel a Cultural game is in the works; all I have to do is get rid of those pesky French! I think their cities will make a fine addition to the Mali empire. :D

contender, going for a cultural victory (as usual)

I’m doing this write up from work, so I don’t have any dates at hand So, without dates this how it went in the first stage.

Settled in place and started building a worker and researching bronze working. The warrior went on exploring the neighbourhood. After the building the first worker, a second one was started. Building was aided with forest chopping. After the second worker a third worker and then a settler.

Research after bronze working was agriculture and animal husbandry. During the time of building the workers and the settler Timbuktu was of course at size 1 working the wooded spice. When AH was discovered I quickly pastured the pigs, irrigated a grassland and mined the gold hills. The first settler built Djenne on the desert hill NW of the marble. 2 workers accompanied him in order to chop a quick obelisk and then quickly improve the surroundings. Timbuktu started building a couple of warriors.

Research after AH was mysticism, masonry, polytheism and monotheism. Monotheism brought us Judaism. The Americans got Buddhism and the French Hinduism. Working the 2 gold hills meant research went fast. The pigs and irrigated grass also enabled Timbuktu to work another 2 mined grassland hills. Working a total of 4 hills made Timbuktu an excellent city for building the Pyramids after completing the 2 warriors.

Meanwhile Djenne concentrated on growth and commerce. Cottaging the floodplains and developing the wheat, the cows and the marble. Builds after the initial obelisk were barracks, 2 settlers and the Oracle. First settler founded Kumbi Saleh amongst the copper, corn, fish and banana, in the same place as Denniz. Second settler founded Goa, again in the same place as Denniz did. With the hills, corn and banana Goa was in a supreme location for the production of an army. Kumbi Saleh of course would become a GP city.

After building the Oracle (obtaining Civil Service) and the Pyramids, Timbuktu, Djenne and Goa started building some maces. Timbuktu and Djenna only build a few maces because these cities, along with Kumbi Saleh, would become the cultural cities. But Goa, working 5 mines after a while, was productive enough to carry the war effort on its own.

With 4 maces Reims, located on the river to the east of Djenne, was taken. After waiting for reinforments Paris was taken using 7 maces. Plans are to take another 2 French cities which will bring us iron, wine and incense. And finally settle our 9th city (Walata) halfway between Goa and Reims.

Wonder builds thus far (I think) are:
Pyramids Timbuktu
Oracle Djenne
Parthenon Djenne
Heroic Epic Djenne
Colossus Goa

First great person was a priest which I used as a specialist in Djenne.

Actually roads weren't needed, the gold would have been connected by the rivers.

Sorry to hear of your quarrel with the French, it's very harmful to a fast finish date.
