Gotm 121

I got home earlier then expected and had enough time to make a new map.

The level of difficulty is changed to King and the mapsize to 250x40. I've tested the new map quickly and it looks like there are no problems anymore. The new game can be downloaded with the link profided in the first post.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but at least we can start again.

Sounds great Magic; thanks.

May I suggest:
1. The map be known. We already know much about it.
2. Small Oceans at both ends.
3. Emperor level.
4. Put grassland and plains at both ends of the land and put 3 rivals each at those ends.
5. One end should have all peaceful rivals (Babylonians, Aztecs, Indians, and Americans) with great city sites (3-4 specials possibly with rivers).
6. The other end should have at least one, possibly more, war monger. Best choices are Mongols, Vikings, and Russians. (Greeks too, but I am assuming we will be playing English.) Again, give them great city sites.
7. Allow both kinds of victory.
8. For an added advantage you can give the rivals a few starting techs too and a second settler as well.

I am part way through on the new map, probably not far enough for a spoiler yet, but just to say I have not used map editor to review the map and I have enjoyed doing the necessary discovery. If you are "in two minds" as we say, as to whether to look at the map in advance, I suggest you don't.

Given that Magic has given us the permission to look, and some of us have already looked, I suggest that you do look so as not to give yourself a disadvantage.

I usually enjoy the game more by exploring the map rather than peeking, and am undecided here. I'm glad I took Ali's advice and peeked at The Maze - exploring that would've been too big a handicap and probably not fun.

Haven't started 121, but it reminds me of the Grand Canyon gotm. This one should go a little faster, since we start near the middle and forest is better for growth than mts. Hoping for some rivers and oceans to speed travel.

This one is far more straight forward than the maze. Not peeking would not handicap you much, just a little at the beginning. You will figure out the pattern soon enough.

Just wondering, should the AI be expanding at all by the year 1000 AD? All of them still seem to have just one city and I'm way ahead in terms of population, tech, etc.

Psycrpotic, you are playing on the new map, right?

Magic gave them room to expand in this map. They should all build several cities. Do you have embassies to make certain they have only one city? Or are you speculating based on top 5 cities?

I was on the impression that using an automated settler to get irrigation without access to water is not allowed. I just checked the GOTM rules and it is indeed allowed. That makes a big difference in this game. I have played to year +1 and not used it. Another player mentioned in the spoiler thread that they have not used it either. Have others used it? I would suggest that if no one has used it yet, then disallow its use for this game (perhaps all games). If others have used it, then we have no choice but to allow it. But at least all players know it is allowed.

Actually, I did use it to let some of the core cities grow a little, when there was not much else to do (past 1000 AD) . I'm not sure if it was worth it, probably not since it takes quite some time to turn 1-food forest to 2-food-irrigated plain.

I have used the automated settlers quite extensively in my version of the game. Virtually every city has some irrigated plains. It was necessary to irrigate some forest into plains to get even a few trade arrows, so it made sense to then spend 5 more settler turns to do so automated irrigation.

Thanks Major Advantage and haleewud for the update. I was planning on turning forest into roaded plains for a couple of my cities. Now I have added irrigation to that plan as well.

I did not use settler automation and don't plan to, but changed city centers to plains and spent those settler turns on a long road. It should become apparent which plan is better as we post more logs, and that makes this GOTM an interesting experiment again.

Same here.
