My approach will be to pop many huts and see what develops. I will not found a city so that a large NON army is created.

I note the wider valley starts one third up map - about 80 spaces up the river, and there are 166 beyond. At the start I will pop the adjacent hut. I plan to move up the valley with the settler, and then branch off to the potential 4-special settlement area to the side. The archer will head off into the mountains to start the hut pops.

As we go I have the map editor open and the tracks of my troops are marked by ocean.

I got 10 techs in the last batch of pops, many more than expected. Anyway, we have a decision coming up.

Army (not very well placed, being largely away from the valley): 20 archers, 1 legion, 8 horse, 5 chariot, 1 ele.

I also decided that I would pop a lot of huts.
But one thing I noticed is that the original site was very close to the date line. A city in the mountains at 78,248 could share the Oasis and the Ivory with a city at the initial starting point.
So after popping a couple of huts, I devoted the settler to improving the terrain around the site.
I roaded and irrigated the Oasis, two other plains (that could also be shared), one of the shield grass and put a road in the silk and 1 other plains.

It took me 5 tries to get the Archer.

At this point, I had reached the slightly wider river valley and was beginning to see some huts on grassland. I was worried about getting an advanced tribe.
My settler was almost done terraforming and Moscow was finally founded in 1800BC. In 1750 (the next turn), I got my first "horde of barbarians" and my first Nomads.

I probably should have given up on science production by this time. The scroll for Invention has not been discovered yet. The tech cost is currently 1369. At 70% science, I am producing 5 beakers per year (274 turns).

This isn't going as well as I had hoped. It all seems to be slowing, and the map means moving takes a lot of time and trade is low value. Maybe I've misplayed this, or maybe I was too optimistic having not really thought the situation through. Whatever I don't think I can finish this quickly as I had hoped, as the Carthaginians are big and right in the way to delay progress further north. I'm going to put this game to one side for a while.
 
I started playing last night and took a different approach.

I decided I want to do conquest. The major decision is when to start popping huts and when to build Moscow. One strategy is to delay the building of capital to collect an army of none units. The other is to build Moscow right away. I choose the latter because:
1. While None units are great, I do not think the shield support is worth delaying the building of the capital. Surely I would have to disband a few units away from home but I think overall it would be worthwhile.
2. With almost all cities on river, full conquest with hut units is unlikely.
3. With cities I have a chance of controlling my tech.

Thus I decided to build Moscow right away. Produce a warrior. Wait till I can produce/rush 10 shields. Pop the first hut and get an Archer. Disband the archer getting me to 25 shields (putting the settler a mere 5 turns away). Go hut hunting with the warrior. By this time I also get the first cheap tech researched. If I get lucky and get money from the second hut I may even get the second tech taken care of. A second size 1 settler may also be possible.

I put the above in to motion and all went according to plan till I started popping other huts. My hut luck was next to awful for quite some time. In fact, I got so few units that unit support was hardly a concern let alone having to disband units because you cannot support them. This also meant that I have popped far fewer huts than expected. After the first (mandatory) archer, I got 2 off path techs and 3 empty huts in a row before another archer appeared.

At -1000 my number of cities is right in between those of Inkerman and haleewud but my techs, units, and money is off by a factor of 5-10.

My only advantage is systematic placement of cities. Moscow is in its original position and my other cities are covering every single tile of fertile land. I am hoping that would help with respawns.

My situation was pretty bad with only 2 Archers in -1000. Hut hunting was slow not to mention the poor outcomes. It went from bad to worse when both tipped huts yielding barbarians. The one on ice was killed. The one on the mountain survived.

At this point I started producing more warriors for hut hunting despite the fact that all the huts close to my cities were already popped. But my hut luck changed as well and the next 5 huts yielded units. This gave me the critical mass I needed for the first time.
This was around -500. The stats clearly show the huge difference this made. Between -1000 and -500 only 12 huts were tipped. Between -500 and +1 (same number of turns) 48 huts were tipped.

Unfortunately Feudalism and Invention both arrived too quickly (in -475 and -175 respectively).

So eventually we had one city (conquered Ulundi), skyrocketing tech costs, a huge but weak army and german respawns in our starting location (plan was to let the settler circle the south pole once while popping huts and then found a city at the starting location).

Well none of us have finished yet, so your situation may not be as bleak as you think it is. But with 152 around the corner (it will be posted by Monday morning) there is more than enough to keep you busy playing civ.

I have just started the conquest phase of my game and Zulu are my first target simply because of their proximity. They are down to 1-2 cities. This happened just in time as they are researching gunpowder and my best unit is a vet knight which does not have a good chance against a musketeer fortified on river. I built the Great Wall to keep it away from my rivals and have created an abundant number of diplomats to take city walls down. Sioux are researching gunpowder too and they will in all likelihood have it by the time I reach them. By then I should have enough cities to overwhelm them with numbers. With trade having low returns I have little hope of out teching my opponents.

Well none of us have finished yet, so your situation may not be as bleak as you think it is. But with 152 around the corner (it will be posted by Monday morning) there is more than enough to keep you busy playing civ.
Actually, I finished this game during the first week of January. It only took me a couple of days for this one. I have also finished GOTM 151. That one also only took a few days. I am anxiously awaiting GOTM 152.
 
Obviously I judge by log entries here and your last one ends in -500 and at that time your game is far from over.

Next game will be a normal game on a game generated map.
 
I started a replay of the entire game (not submittable of course), this time as OCC. Things went pretty smoothly, the long distance to the AI made trade difficult, however prevented the AI from being hostile. Furthermore, the limited space prevented the AI from growing, thus being no competition in the space race. I just launched a 25-6-6-2-2-2-ship in 1900.
