Gotm #24 - Spoiler

Pardon my suprise - I did not know Civ was so widely played. My dad is just 66, I believe. Perhaps I'll get him a copy...

I've been following your interactions with Solo and Bloody Monk regarding Early Landings over on Apolyton. Very interesting.

Yes, indeed (and 64 is my age)
...but I guess my mental age is close to 4*4=16 :crazyeye:
(why should I play civ2 so much otherwise? :crazyeye: )
Wow! I am impressed that at age 64 you are so young at heart that you are playing Civ2. When I first read your hint I figured you must have finished in 340 and that you are 27, dimissing the other possibilities (8 for too young and 64 for too old). When did you first start playing Civ? When Civ1 came out you must have been about 50. It is an honor for Civ2 to have such a wide appeal. As ElephantU mentioned maybe we should get our dads into playing Civ. Mine will be 74 soon.

(very interesting hypothesis; I wouldn't say no to it; unfortunately it's wrong :( )
I never played civ1 (started playing computer games with UFO, which was great fun). Started playing civ2 in 1996.

Ok I finished in 1780 with a world conquest and thought I did OK until I read some of the post you folks have posted. I am in awe! !
Hats off to el_kalkylus, I will have to go and read your post 6 or 7 times and learn a few things.
I started my game at the beginning of the month but stopped around 1550 and didn't get back to it until this weekend. (Civ3 got my attention, much different game, by I degress) Don't know what I was thinking when I left it but I had to draw it to a quick end. I confess I rarely play deity and never use Fundy so this was new for me, but here is where I ended.

1780AD
pop 18,360,000
44 cities
37 techs
16 wonders

I'm not one for building caravans, but maybe I'll have to reconsider.

Thanks, but you should really look at Starlifters game. My game is alot worse than what he would do, because I pretty much copied much what he said and did it. Also, I cheated unknowingly, because food caravan trick is strangely disallowed. I didn't use it to full extent though, just in the capital and a little in other cities too.

I have just installed civilization 3 (again) too, but this time I have more fun. Maybe someday I will even play through the middle age and up to modern era. I really like to play the beginning of the game before the empire gets too big. (this is a reason why my score will be "low" in this civ2 gotm 24, because I only ended with 70 cities (20 small ones).)

Here is my log until the end in 1480 AD. I kept my reputation spotless, but even the built-in point system does not seem to reward such nice behaviour : I got the same 1240 `bonus points' for conquering the world I obtained for doing so atrociously in gotm23 in 1754 AD. I mainly invested in more ships (to still deliver caravans in one part of the world while `taking over responsibilities' elsewhere) and also doubled my mounted troups to 20+ --- with some additional catapults since I was (needlessly) afraid of enemy spearmen. Turning elephants and crusaders into (non-vet) dragoons with Leonardo turned out to be superfluous.

Some general thoughts about this game : it certainly is a good idea to read the relevant threads _before_ starting the game, for instance it took me a while to find out that putting science above 50% has no effect. I still have to get used to the idea to rehome all caravans to the same (super trade) city, although I do rehome all caravans to still have the choice of 3 different goods. I am still used to civ1 where the trade arrows resulting from caravans are much more important than the delivery bonus. I guess this is even more crucial in fundamentalism since caravan-beakers are not halved --- a bug of the game ? The `very angry citizens' are nothing to be afraid of as they are much easier seduced by luxuries : with 80% luxuries all cities up to size 7 had only happy citizens. This probably makes democracy on deity level easier than on emperor or even king level --- another bug of the game ?
