Gotm #24 - Spoiler

I've run into another issue I thought I should bring out for discussion: the western end of the Japanese island crosses the dateline. There is a Whale to the left of it, and a Wheat to the right. If you put one city on the left side and another on the right, they can both use both specials without blocking each other. I did this by accident (I was ICSing until I got Trade, then shifted to massive caravans), but then figured it out about 200yrs later. Anyone else run into this? Is this still legal? And was this map hand-crafted, or did CIV2MAP actually generate this?

I have played till -700.

My strategy so far has been rapid expansion. I hope to follow with conquest at some point. I picked Masonry as the first tech and have recently finished Pyramids. I have another wonder in progress which is most likely going to be Great library. Several other civs have started wonders but no one has finished yet.

I have explored my island with 2 warriors. I have about a dozen cities and plan 6 more on my island. I have 3 triremes exploring the world but have so far only found Indians. They demanded ceremonial burial for peace and I complied since I have no offensive units or techs. After establishing an embassy with them I realized how bad I am doing in tech: they have +6 advantage over me.

I have only a barrack and a temple. No other infrastructure.

I was going to try power fundy (cities in celebration) but realized it is not possible at Deity level without Hanging Gardens and even then barely so. I have given up on that for now.

I have not seen a single barbarian so far!

It's legal. This map is just a randomly generated one. All I did was set the governments, wipe the huts and save it. I didn't preview it or anything. So much fun in one map, cool. :)

I stumbled into this as well, finding out that my `filler city' Shimonoseki had more resources than I had anticipated. Is there a way to know beforehand ?

Ali:

It is absolutely possible to have your cities in celebration without the gardens!

Just build a lot of cities so that double unhappy citizens start to show up. It only takes 2 goblets to make them happy compared to 4 goblets for red citizens.

About to found the last cities on the Japanese island, which I probably should have achieved by 1 AD already. Between BC 950 and 250 I simply `forgot' to found new cities, although I already had in mind where to place them.

It only happens when the cities radi passes over the (0,X) line. Just how the game has a problem moving units across this line using the goto command, it has problems tracking what cities are using which squares across it.

Thanx ! So when parsing for good city sites I might want to have a look at those grid numers as well...

Here is my log up to 1120 AD. With the Japanese island covered with (Japanese) cities I started visiting the neighbours, maybe knocking the door a bit too firmly (the settler to re-found Berlin is still only on its way). Since the Indians just ignored my demands for tribute (and I wanted to keep my reputation spotless this time) I sailed over to the Celts first, then back to the Indians and am now on my way `back' to the Cartaginians. That one will be tougher since they have feudalism for quite some time and Carthago is founded on a river. While my forces of 10+ crusaders seem to be sufficient I constantly have the feeling that I lack transport capacity, even with now 6 triremes and 8 caravels. Is there some good rule of thumb as to how many ships one should build ?

500AD here I come!

This is a short summary of what happened between 300AD and 500AD. Every turn takes a long time to play but the game will end soon. Only two enemies remain and they are surrounded. I have broken the 200 city limit and expansion is even faster now when I have Engineers. I will build 50 more cities, build the remaining wonders and take the enemy cities and then the game is finished!

I have spared the Chinese (trading partner) and the Indians (key civ). I have started to give cities numbers as names since I didn't want two cities with the name Kyoto etc.

Trade was a primary goal in this GOTM because of the limitations Fundamentalism imposes on research. Setting the Science Rate above 50% does not increase your research, and half of the city-generated beakers are lost. Every city founded needs to start with at least two trade arrows in order to generate one beaker, and will not generate a second beaker until there is eight or more trade arrows. But caravan delivery bonuses produce beakers equal to the gold, and those beakers are not halved.

The other benefit of discovering Trade is building the wonder called Marco Polo's Embassy. By itself it does not give you trade, techs, or maps, but it allows you to see everything on the Intel screen that you would discover in setting up an embassy with a Diplomat. Early in the game, when few other civs have explored much with ships, having an embassy with everyone allows you to trade techs and maps, even if you start with a disadvantage. This game was a classic case of Marco Polo Manipulation.

Upon finishing Marco Polo's Embassy (I wanted Pyramids first) I discovered there were 19 techs known among the seven civs, but I had only 7. In several cases I had only two techs that a particular civ did not, so trading would require careful planning. Also, I did not have Maps yet, so I did not know where each civ was in relation to the others. From the Intel screen I could see only one war in progress, but I knew that hostile contact could have happened without being listed. When one civ is hostile toward another their attitude drops toward you if you conclude a peace treaty with their enemy. I was going to have to watch the attitudes carefully and revisit some civs if things changed.

Here is a summary of the other civs before I started trading:
*Receptive Celts: Despotism, 216g, 2cities, 8techs, research: Wheel, war:Carthage
*Receptive Germans: Monarchy, 203g, 4cities, 11techs, research: Republic, no wars
*Uncoop Aztecs: Despotism, 112g, 2cities, 10techs, research: Currency, no wars
*Neutral Chinese: Despotism, 141g, 4cities, 7techs, research: Republic, no wars
*Icy Carthaginians: Despotism, 424g, 5cities, 11techs, research: Wheel, war:Celts
*Neutral Indians: Despotism, 265g, 4cities, 11techs, research: Astronomy, no wars

I gather the intent of the game was to give the AI civs a head start with Monarchy or Communism, but it looks to me like they all reverted to Despotism early on until they discovered better government on their own. There must be an error in the AI logic that it does not stick with any government "gifts" in a Scenario. The one civ in Monarchy had discovered it on their own, and two others were researching Republic.

Anyway, from each Intel screen I made a chart of "who had what":
Alph- JAP,India,Carthage,China,Aztec,German,Celt
Bro- JAP,India,Carthage,China,Aztec,German,Celt
CerB- India,Carthage,China,Aztec,German,Celt
CoL- JAP,Carthage,China,Aztec,German,Celt
Cons- German
Cur- JAP,Carthage,German,Celt
Hor- India,Carthage,Celt
Lit- India,China,German
Map- India,Carthage,German
Mas- JAP,India,Carthage,China,Aztec,German
Math- India,Aztec
MON- Aztec,German
Myst- India,Carthage,Aztec,Celt
Phil- India
Poly- Carthage
Pot- Carthage,Aztec,Celt
Tra- JAP
WarC- India
Wri- China,Aztec,German

I then rearranged this into the following (the capitalized ones I had):
Receptive Celts need Cons, Lit, Map, MAS, Math, Mon, Phil, Poly, TRA, WAR, Wri
Receptive Germans need Hor, Math, Myst, Phil, Poly, Pot, TRA, WAR
Uncooperative Aztecs need Cons, CUR, Hor, Lit, Map, Phil, Poly, TRA, WAR
Neutral Chinese need Cons, CUR, Hor, Map, Math, Mon, Myst, Phil, Poly, Pot, TRA, WAR
Icy Carthage need Cons, Lit, Math, Mon, Phil, TRA, WAR, Wri
Neutral Indians need COL, Cons, CUR, Mon, Poly, Pot, TRA, Wri

It may also help to bear in mind the "natures" of the AI civs, as that can prejudice them to "appreciate" certain tech gifts more than others:
Celt- Rational Expansionist
German- Aggressive Civilized Perfectionist
Aztec- Civilized Perfectionist
Chinese- Civilized
Carthage- Militaristic
Indian- Rational Perfectionist

One last thing before I started trading: I dumped my treasury into Partial Rush-Buying. Sometimes when you are above 50g the other civs will demand a gift of gold to continue with negotiations. So use your gold before you negotiate, unless you are planning to pay for a tech.

My priorities were: Maps for trading, Writing for Diplomats, Ceremonial Burial and Mysticism for Tithe-makers, and Philosophy and PolyTheism for starting on MonoTheism, which gives Crusaders and Michelangelo's Chapel.

I've tried this different ways, sometimes starting with the most friendly civs, sometimes the most hostile. This time I decided to try the most hostile for two reasons: they had two techs I really wanted, Maps and PolyTheism, and they were in a war so they would probably appreciate getting WarCode, one of the few I had that they did not. They were also the larger of the two civs, with 5 cities to the Celts 2. I figured the Celts would be more desperate and thus less likely to refuse when I approached them after making peace with Carthage.

I met the Icy Carthaginians and found they had 5 Spears on their Power Display, meaning they were Mighty. They made an immediate peace offer, which I accepted, whereupon they turned Receptive. I was suprised, but figured it might have something to do with the war. I asked to exchange techs, and they expressed interest in WarCode, as expected. When you do not know what they have they will choose two of yours that they are interested in, listing the most preferred first. Sometimes offering the alternative is acceptable, but sometimes they reject it. There is a chart of "tech valuations" somewhere in RULES.TXT that "rates" the techs versus the Civilized/Miilitaristic "nature" of the AI civ. If you are trying to improve their attitude toward you, you really want to give that primary tech when asked. Turning it down can move you down a notch in their attitudes. Anyway, once you agree to exchange you can pick any one of their techs, no matter what they "offered". I chose Maps, then asked for a second round of exchange, where they took Trade and I took PolyTheism. Their attitude had improved to Cordial, but I had run out of techs to trade, so I closed discussions.

Just to see how things went (I seemed to be on a roll...) I approached the Receptive Celts next. They had 3 Spears in their Power Display, which meant they were Moderate. We had a lively exchange: Maps for Pottery, WarCode for Mysticism, Trade for Horseback Riding, and Masonry for Ceremonial Burial. They then impudently demanded PolyTheism, but since I was in a good mood I let them have it (they would need it against Carthage), whereupon they offered peace. They were now Worshipful, so I asked for their map and got half of Carthage in the bargain.

Moving down the list, I next met with the Receptive Germans. They had 4 Spears, so they were Strong. Another lively exchange ensued: Trade for Construction, WarCode for Literacy, Mysticism for Monarchy, and Pottery for Writing. They offered peace, we shook hands, and their attitude said Worshipful. I asked to exchange maps, but they said they had "no need" for my useless maps, and they reverted back to Receptive. That usually happens when I've forgotten to make sure they have the MapMaking tech, but I rechecked the Intel screen and they did. I would have to come back to them later.

Next was the Uncooperative Aztecs, who turned out to have NO spears, so they were Pathetic. They demanded Literacy as a price of continuing negotiations, so I gave it to them and got a peace treaty. I then exchanged Trade for Mathematics so that I did not have to ask the Indians for it. They were Enthusiastic now, so I gifted them Construction to Worshipful, but I knew they did not have MapMaking yet so I offered another gift and Maps came up as the alternate. Then we amiably exchanged maps and I concluded.

There was only one tech left on my wish list, but I was still interested in maps, so I met the Neutral Chinese. They had 1 Spear, so they were Inadequate. They demanded Trade, which I gave them to get the peace treaty, which got them to Receptive. I then gifted them Construction and Pottery to Worshipful and asked for a map exchange: "no need for your useless maps". I had forgotten about MapMaking again. I gifted Maps and asked again and we exchanged maps and closed discussions.

On to the last civ, my KeyCiv, the Neutral Indians. They had 2 Spears, which meant they were Weak (which is better than Inadequate?). They immediately demanded Construction, which I gave them to get a peace treaty. I asked for an exchange and they wanted Trade, so I got Philosophy. They were now Cordial, so I gifted PolyTheism and Pottery to get to Worshipful and exchange maps. It was a wrap.

I had all the techs now, but not all the maps. I revisited the Receptive Carthaginians and gifted them Construction, Math, and Philosophy (little dangerous there: they might beat me to MonoTheism, but I could start right away and use caravans, so I felt safe), they turned Worshipful and exchanged maps. I then revisited the Germans, gifted Philosophy, PolyTheism and Math (all primary requests) to get them to Worshipful as well and got their map too. Now I had all the techs, all the maps, peace with everyone and all the attitudes were Enthusiastic.

A couple of final things. My research cost had gone way up, so it was time to play with my KeyCiv, the Indians. I gifted them every tech they did not have and got a 15% drop in research cost. I also noticed that the Aztecs were still researching Currency, which I already had, so I revisited them and had to give them WarCode and Horseback Riding before Currency came up as an alternate. Gifting them their current research forces them to change to a new tech, hopefully one that I wanted and could trade for in the future.

Before ending my turn I checked out the maps carefully, comparing city size, commodity demands, and developed terrain to pick the best trading partners for upcoming caravan deliveries. Since tech hiding was off I did not have to check to see if all my new techs would hide or enable MonoTheism as my next research (I had been working on Maps). I also looked at which AI cities were building wonders, trying to gauge their production rates so I could tell how many caravans to devote to wonders versus deliveries. Plug the laptop in to charge, turn off the alarm (it can't really be THAT late- or rather early...), and off to bed dreaming of more "1000 ways to know you've played too much CIV"!

Pyramids, then Lighthouse and Caravans

ElephantU, that is a marvelous tale. I have gotten some tech from the AI with my Marco Polo, but not all that you did! Again Smash is clobbering me because I kept the Settler from None.
I list the Status Snap Shot per Ali Ardavan below at 1000BC, 1AD, and 500AD. It was a bit of news going thru all of that data, but I doubt I will continue to do it at 1000AD and such. Sorry, too much work.

This was way more fun than the last fundy game, probably because of all the food specials.

First look: We start near the dateline. Let's see if there are double-use specials around. Looks like the 4-special site will be on forest. That would allow the size-1 settler at the cost of 10 turns of no science. That can't be good. Lets try a classic ICS trying to double every 13 turns until we get 12 cities. Tech Path: Maps, Poly, kick booty.

BC
4000 Found Kyoto, working fish.
3950* Research Alph. Move settler to mountain
3900 To found Osaka? pro: hill for defence. Con: no science for a while, which is annoying in the early stages. Pop grows slower. That's the kicker.
3850 Osaka founded on grass near wheat. Follow Dave V formula: no roads; maximize food until size 2, then maximize production

3750* Kyoto: PRB warrior, work forest for size 2.
3700 Kyoto size 2
3650 Osaka PRB Warrior.
3600 Osaka work forest for size 2
3550* Osaka size 2
3500 Alph=>Maps

3250 Osaka builds Settlers. 2nd Wheat found - this one maybe double use!
3150* Build road on Wheat for Osaka science. Build road for new city science. Kyoto PRB warrior
3100 both Osakas workers on wheat, Osaka PRB warrior.
3000 Edo founded. settler moves to other side of dateline to work wheat - Whale!. Goody.

2950* Maps=>HB (33) Satsuma founded working wheat. 4 cities by 2950 looks good.
2750* Kyoto builds Settlers. Starts Lighthouse
2700 Osaka builds Settlers. -will head toward plage to double Whale.
2550* HB=>CB. Kagoshima founded.
2400 Satsuma builds Settlers. Edo Builds Setttlers
2350 * running out of island - time for some triremes.
2300 Nara founded working Whale.

1950* Settlers in Satsuma - a roadbuilder and then on a trireme
1800 Happiest: Japanese. RB barracks in Osaka. First Trireme.
1750* Poly=>Writing. Unload settler to work whale on new continent? Nope it's still #20.
1700 Nagasaki founded. Naoya builds settlers.
1650 Nara builds settlers.. Pop 300,000
1400 Yokohama founded. Land Ho!
1350* Writing =>Masonry
1250 Aztec Capital moved to Teotichuan
1200 Nagasaki, Nagoya build Settlers. Shimoneseki founded on new continent (#13)
1000 Masonry=>Pots. Indians. give CB. No peace.

975* Kyoto builds Pyramids Germans: no peace. 50 gold tribute. Matsuyama founded
950 Pop 500,000. Bribe a German and an Indian warrior.
875* Germans: threat. Indians - sneak atack. Germans: 100g for peace. trade CB for Construction. They have CoL, Currency, Literacy. Bribe Indian Horse. Raze Madras.
850 Sapporo founded
825 Hakodate founded
800x Capture Bangalore. 46g. CoL. Indians: offer 200g for peace. FOOLS!. Subvert Bombay - Indians decry incident. Pottery. get 23g, settler, archer, vet phalanx, barracks. What a Deal!. Barbs soon will attack vet phalanx on river, giving leader.
775* Germans ask us to withdraw - we say OK. Barb dies on our phalanx. Research Currency. Kill Barb leader (100g)
750 Pop: 600K. Germans: War. Ise founded
725 Currency=>Trade
675*Indians destroyed.
650 Pop 800k. Leipzig captured. 24 gp, Literacy. Cease-fire.
575*pop 900k Germans: War. find Berlin. Find Canton.
525 Chinese: give Literacy. Ceasefire.
500 Berlin captured. 60gp. Trade. Germans destroyed.

475 *researching Seafaring Chinese start GL
450 Carthage starts HG
425 Seafaring=>IronW
350 Marco Polo finished in Kyoto. Aztecs start HG

MPE investigation:
Celts (despots) Myst, Wheel, 1 city
Aztecs (despots) Math, 3 cities
Carthaginians Myst, 6 cities - researching Engineering for us
Chinese 4 cities no tech
Japanese: 22 cities - only white tech is Poly.

take a break and figure out how to get the AI to research stuff for me. I can get to Leos faster than they, but it may not get that far - vet Elephantsrule! Plan: Build Lighthouse in 3 turns and then boogie. Take out Chinese in standard fashion (raze capital, bribe remaining cities for peanuts) - need 3 dips. A trade carvan is heading to China. Maybe take that stupid ship chain and move it ti Chinese coast. Somebody is east of me.

Celts: give Maps. Trade Constr and Lit for Wheel. Myst. Trade Maps!.
Aztecs: give Lit, Trade, Constr for Mathematics, peace. No maps, no tribute
Chinese: give trade, constr. peace. no tribute

325 Aztecs- give wheel, no joy. Chinese, no joy. Celts - give WC, elephant. No tribute.
275* find Aztec explorer
250 Osaka builds Lighthouse.
225 Carthage develop engineering. Carthage: trade Maps for Engineering. give Literacy; worshipful. ask for tribute - WAR. Feels like MGE
200 Izumo hides to Osksa (d, 40) (Osaka is size 8) Nagasaki Beads to Bombay (d, 96)
175* Aztecs: trade maps. Now we have found everybody.
150 Teotichuan builds HG. Next victim.
125 Carthage builds Colossus. Barbs kill a ship near China. Matsuyama Wool to Carthage (d, 56)
100 Beijing builds GL, Wealthuest: 1. Carthage 2, Chinese 3Aztecs 4Celts 5Japanese
Iron W=>Inv. Edo Silver to Canton (d, 190r)
75* Berlin Gems to Kyoto (d, 180). Subvert Nanking (99x2). Chinese: 75g tribute.
50 Kyoto Dye to Berlin (d,120) Chinese 25g
25 Yokohama Hides to Nanking (D, 88)
1AD Invention =>Bridge B (not Gunpowder yet.) Edo Dye to Leipzig (d, 60) Barb leader 100g
bought many white goods. Chinese 50g

Sun Tzu says 10=1 is good odds.
to conquer Chinese (3 cities) - need 2 dips (Ise, Shimoneseki). For Beijing I think 5 elephants should do it - I have 5 and an archer and a horse - we'll attack in 2 turns when I can get the Ellies there.
Carthage - need a bunch of Elephants and 5 dips. ( Kyoto, Nara, Carthage: 7 elephants: Izumo, Nagasaki, Satsuma, Nagiya, Omi (Osaka?) Attackin about 6 turns when Triremes get there.
Aztecs: 7 Ellies for Teotihuan (Echizen, Leipzig, Sapporo, Bombay +2 already there) and 2 dips. (Berlin, Ise, Toyama) attack when elephants arrive - 8 turns.
Celts - the last one - kill with ellies from Carthage.

set tax to 80% - Time for Total War!

20AD *
40 Chinese: war
60 Beijing taken (27g) (GL) need 285g for Canton.
80 Subvert Canton (112) (get 44g) after knocking it down a few turns. Sell granary.
100* Yokohama Beads to Canton (d,64) Yokohama copper to Canton (d, 64)
Subvert Shanghai (57 - getting 17 back) Chinese destroyed.

120 Carthage develops Alph., kills phalanx and caravan. Ship chain to carthage almost in place.
140 Ship chain to Aztecland almost in place.
160 Tenochtitlan captured (HG, 35g) Give Invention for cease-fire as we are exposed.
220 Tlateloco captured. Tenochtitlan bribed. Aztecs destroyed.

260* A desperate battle against Carthage begins. the 5th dip takes out city walls.
280 almost done.
300 Carthage captured (Colossus, 87gp) Malaca bribed.
320 Panormus bribed.
340* Utica captured
380 Kells subverted. Caralis conquered. Carthage destroyed.

400 closing in on cardiff

Yes and yes.A 2nd settler always builds ASAP in my games.Cept OCC of course.

There was a slight difference in the calculation of whether 2nd settler pays better to work or found a city in this game - usually Irrigation does not pay in Despotism starts, and Settlers eat only one food until Republic, but here we started in Fundy so Irrigation pays better (especially those Wheats and Silk->Wheats!), while a NONE Settler saves two food rather than one.

In OCC, wait until the city grows to 2 (do some roads & irrigation meanwhile, try to speed up the growth), then Join City to 3 and start Celebrations.

In this game, I thought that starting right away using of fish was going to be good, as it leads to size 2 in 5 turns. For the second city, I don't see irrigating the wheat before founding to be a help - the city would grow to size 2 in 4 turns rather than 5, but when the first settler was built it would knock the city back to size one thus obviating any prior gains. I got to 4 cities in 2950BC, which seemed pretty good. Later results were less elegant... :p

I think the issue in Despotism starts is always whether to use the Size One Settler strategy - it is interesting that in several of the last few GOTMs that strategy has been contra-indicated. In this one, for instance, because of getting the irrigation bonus right away, in combination with the uncertainty of finding huts, there is no way to delay the growth to size 2 unless you found the city on hills, plains (there aren't any good plains sites nearby) or forest, both of which set you too far back in getting your early cheap science advances. Of course if there were an Archer or something from a hut which could be disbanded, that would change the situation. :D
