Gotm 24

(a weakness in the scenario, the AI's should be the Communism or Monarchy tech and we should get the fundimenalism tech to be fair, but then we would have fanatics at start which would be grossly unfair)

That's why I made some Monacrhy and some Communist. I didn't want to give the fundy tech because of what you already pointed out. Plus, I didn't want the AI to have their techs because some players would steal them and benefit unduely from them. :)

Shucks - I was just hoping to steal Monarchy so I could get to Feudalism quicker...

I've been dying to try to combine ICS and Early Conquest anyway...

This will be my first GOTM and it looks like I picked a challenging one to start with. I've lurked in the forums for the last couple of months but was unable to join in those games due to time constraints. I hope I learned enough from the posts I've read so that I don't embarress myself too much!

Actually, not only is this my first GOTM game, but also my first fundy AND diety. I have perused the GOTM #18 Spoiler thread for hints and tips so hopefully that will help. I've already seen some things that have changed my initial advancement plan.

I look forward to this and will post a log in the spoiler thread after I reach 1AD. That way everyone can point out my glaring errors. :D

Welcome, Big_Al! That's how we all learned! Keeping a log has three benefits: others can read what you did and learn from it, you get tips, criticisms and suggestions from others, and you keep better track of what you are doing over time. Looking back at some of my first logs, I cannot believe how much better I am playing. Also, there is no easy way to micro-manage your research beakers without a log or one of those external "cracker" utilities. When you are playing OneCityChallenge this becomes critical.

I think you will find that starting in Fundy cancels out the worst part of Deity: citizen unhappiness. It also gives you full use of special resources and makes irrigating worthwhile from the beginning (unlike Despotism). You do need to change your research strategies to emphasize trade rather than city research. The value of a SuperScienceCity is also diminished. The loss of huts for early techs is the biggest problem in this one.

Pay special attention to the Spoiler thread from GOTM18. The difference between that one and this is that the other civs were all stuck in Despotism at the start. It was easy beating them. Just time consuming on such a big map.

Civ On!

Thank you, ElephantU for the warm welcome and soound advice. I've reviewed the Spoiler thread for GOTM #18 and printed out many of Starlifters posts. I've also reviewed a couple of the trade posts on Apolyton, so I think I am ready to begin. I do have a couple of questions, though, and would like feedback on them.

LOL, I'm a LONG way from being ready for a OOC, but I'm not 100% sure of what aspects of research I would be micro managing with a log. Are you referring to keeping track of accumulated beakers vs. the number generated per turn and adjusting tax setting so as not to waste beakers? If so I do that without a log, unless you count scratch paper and pencil as a log ;) . Am I missing something else I should be keeping track of?

Two:
After further review of the GOTM #18 Spoiler thread and posts on trading I've decided on the following priorities for advancement research:
1) Mas for PYR. I make it #1 only because it is quick to get to and the AI always seems to make PYR a priority.
2) Trade for the obvious MPE and Caravans

Hopefully at that point I can trade for other vital advances (like MM). Comments anyone?

Your scratch paper is a START on a log...
Aside from tracking accumulated beakers (which you log at the beginning of the new turn, not at the end of the previous), the number of beakers required can change from turn to turn as the program compares your Power Rating to other civs and compares your TechNumber (minus starting techs) to your KeyCiv. So I also make it a habit to check both the "number of turns for tech" on the F5/F6 screen as well as the PowerRating on the F3 screen. Changes in one or both will require recalculating any plans to hit a particular tech on a particular turn. Course, that's usually government changes, and thats ruled out for GOTM24... But anyway, read some threads on Power Ratings and KeyCivs.

Your #1 is mine too. Especially since our city research is halved.

Other ways to get tech:
- Stealing it, requiring Diplomats or Spies (Alp:Wri).
- Trading other civs for it, requiring contact and preferably embassies or Marco Polo (another reason for Trade).
- Capturing cities, requiring powerful attackers (Hor:Whe for Chariots or Hor:Cer:PT for Elephants, plus Barracks for vets).
- Build GreatLibrary (Alp:Wri:CoL:Lit).

Something you may not be aware of is that the other civs tend to follow your lead in setting research levels, so if you set it to 10% they will TEND to do so as well. Then get most of your beakers from caravans and you will do well. The other civs are less aggressive if you play Classic/2.42 than the MultiPlayerGold Edition.

Looking forward to reading your logs!

I'm sorry to disappoint the scenario maker but you CAN
change governments just build or capture the Statue of
Liberty.
