GOTM #3: Ideas

How about an emperor level game for April and a deity level game for May? We have to try a deity game sometime... it will be a good experience for all of us. Some players have the potential to win on deity level; they just don't realize that. A GOTM on deity level could force them to see how good they really are...

One thing's for sure: we won't get lower than king. I think it's not arrogant to say that everyone can play at king (try it and you'll see). Besides, the real good players won't have the opportunity than to measure each others prestations.

And sure, next time we may have a deity game. If you think you're not up to it: doesn't matter if you try it anyway. If you don't play you'll loose anyway.

After that it should be random, but not the same levels next to each other, so May should be king or emperor.

I never have played on deity TOO much, (more of an emperor guy myself) but I think that most everybody can compete at deity if not dominate. But the fun is in not dominating, at least I think. I think it is more fun when you are getting "beat" and the game is just the tiniest bit in doubt. The greatest game of Civ I ever played was when I had to come back from nearly insurmountable odds to acheive a half baked victory (Whole lotta global warming, but no enemies ) Let's face it, does your heart pump more when you place that 158th city on the map, or when your treasury has 12 gold and the message "The ignorant empire of the Zulus has almost completed Mikes Chapel or Leo's Workshop." I think you have to play on the high levels to make everybody better. Especially me!!! HAHA

It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at THAT man.

I have to agree about what makes a great game. I will always remember my first game on Emperor level - The Russians launced their spaceship before I was even 1/2 way finished. However, it was due to take some time and I built a launchable one that (apparently) was very light and was due to take aobut 6 or 7 years. I figured mine would arrive 1 year before the Russians and spent the rest of the game defending my capital from attacks from nukes and other units.

I wonder how we would all fare if we were the "respawn" civilization (as if the Chinese or Persians were killed off early and we, the Americans, spawned anew. Insert whatever color you like in this scenario). Starting well behind like this would certainly require some interesting choices...

True. But you really shouldn't think everyone can play deity. There are differences in people's skills, you know.

In my opinion the most exciting part of the GOTM is finding out what it will be when it is unveiled at the beginning of the month. So I would vote against a poll to pick the next GOTM. As for the difficulty level I had never played as high as King before GOTM#2 and I was surprised at how well I think I did(we'll see). So I say play whatever level, just as long as you keep mixing things up so we have a surprise to look forward to at the beginning of every month.
Just my thoughts

I feel the same way. From now on there will be no previews of GOTMs. I do agree GOTM should be King level or higher, and I will try not to use any kind of accelerated startups...

I will upload GOTM #3 on March 31st, and Matrix will post about it on the main page and in this forum. Please submit your saved games to Matrix by March 31st.

Fantastic! I agree totally.

Hey, I don't anyway has ever made such a good 1st post.

Sorry Matrix - just using an example with the light blue colors. I tried to qualify by stating afterward that you could use whatever color ... Could there even be a custom civ?

As far as the poll - having the poll doesn't mean that you'd have to post the results. You could still ask for a vote and just set one up based on the response - though I understand that it could narrow the choices and provide extra work that may not be necessary. I also enjoy the fun of being suprised by what the game will be. To that end, perhaps you could leave out telling us the size of the map, the number of civs and the barbarian level and let us find out as we go. Would that be possible?

hehe, Newt doesn't sound like a newbie in his first post.

Wow! That could be very cool.

Imagine...You don't know what level you're playing until people start getting unhappy (although I guess it tells you when you open the saved game. Stupid me!-> ) You're not sure whether the Barbs are going to show up. No idea how big the land masses might be. Or what the climate is. You don't even know how many other civs to look for until you encounter them all (can you say "Marco Polo"!) or they're all gone and suddenly the game ends.

I certainly wouldn't want to do this every month, but every once in a while it could pose a very interesting challenge.

I like the idea of trying a game not knowing anything (like # of Civs, size of map), though some of those things are pretty easy to determine in other ways (can we say powergraph ) I also greatly enjoyed thinking through what I would do at the start of this game, based on Thunderfall's preview, so I think this type of accelerated start-up with a preview could be very interesting (not all the time, of course). I agree with others an accelerated start-up where we begin way BEHIND the others civs would be really challenging.

BTW, I don't recall seeing the level when I open a saved game. I've never looked for it, so maybe I'm just not seeing it. When/where/how does it do this?

When you load the game and it says "Archbishop Leowind of the Oregonians 1420 AD" I believe the title bar to that dialog box has the level in it.

Then again, I could be wrong.

No, you're right. When you load a game it says at what level you are. Also, when you look at your score (press F9), you can see the barbarians level by the bonus/penalty. And you can see the map size by...the map . And it's also a bit rare to keep these consealed. Only map type and # of civs can be kept a secret.

But I suggest only to make a random map, since you're so close to standard anyway...

After discussion with Thunderfall, we've decided that from now on the GOTM's will be 'blind': Map type and # of civs will not be revealed. The rest will, since that's that's easy to figure out anyway...

Since the number of other civs is not revealed, should we stipulate that saving and retiring to see the powergraph is officially considered cheating for GOTMs?

We'll also have to be very careful about spoilers within the updates that we give in the forum. I would think it would be OK to eventually discuss the civs you meet and the land that you are developing but only after a major league warning so those who are beginning or were NOT able to build Marco Polo's can still play on.

Yep, there it is, plain as day I've never had need to look for it before.

By map type, do you mean landmass type and climate type? You can't mean size, as that is fairly easy to determine from the reference map.

I would think we would have to agree not to retire and view the powergraph if we want # of Civs to be kept secret.

That's why I think starting a normal game, where only the map type (which indeed does not include size) is unknown, whould be the best choice. I've stated promptly that the next GOTM won't reveal the # of civs, but it's not fixed yet.

No, people want to retire when they play a game, just to see how they are doing. I don't think we can make this kind of rule. You can easily make a mistake as you retire automatically.
