GOTM 31 Results and Congratulations

Ok, no rush, but we'd all wait for the non-conquest GOTM32, right? :joke:

I'm trying to make excel generate the charts now. I may resort to a real statistical software package, though.

Darn. Not a good first outing, but I thought I had a shot at the little green truck.

Congratulations to apdaj.

I shouldn't have sabotaged Germany's spaceship parts production!

Very tough competition indeed!

I thought I had done better than usual, but everyone has, so actually my Jason score is very much the same as usual.

Whoot! I got an award on only my second GOTM! :crazyeye:

Sorry dvandenberg, maybe next time. :)

Congratulations to all those who, er, WON this month's game. Cya next month...

Wow!! I was just joking about getting results on the 2nd; that may happen soon! The staff is really on their game!!

The person most responsible for getting the results out so early is AlanH. He has spent a lot of time and effort to automate the system. Others on the staff helped him, most notably ainwood and space oddity, but the bulk of the work was done by AlanH.

Many rounds of applause are in order

Congrats to all the winners and maybe next to all of us trailing the leaders.

I had my worst ever finish and it just goes to show what happens when you pick the same victory condition that DaveMcW does, then decide to launch the spaceship. I could have launched in 1850 AD, won the vote in 1780 AD or won via domination in 1730 AD, but was playing for a Histographic win and probably would have been around 6500 if I'd have played it out. I did have a base score that would have put me in the top 40, but thanks to Jason, a spaceship launch in 2013 AD is quite devalued.

Like DaveMcW I also milked my game this month, although not for nearly as long.

I have checked and found that if I had taken domination at 810ad I would have scored 10768, but instead by milking all the way to 910 ad for conquest I scored 10803. Two hours well spent. I increased my final position by exactly the same amount as DaveMcW by this milking.

What made you stop milking? Did you get an unexpected cultural expansion? I haven't dl'd your game but it seems to me if you'd stuck with it you might have broken 11k. As yet, I can only dream of breaking 10k.

Ignorance, pure ignorance.

I don't know. If I were in your position - I would have bailed and took the points as well. I would be afraid of screwing my game up by milking badly and destroying what was a good game.

Here are some sample summary graphs to help understand the data. This shows how the scores and times varied across all players. The graphics are the standard icons, except for the smilie, which represents my score and time.

What do you think?

Would yuo really want these on a per-game basis? Note that the data in graph #3 is represented in the statistics graphs currently, covering all games to date. Graph #1 info is also represented as min/average/max jason scores, but I guess you are interested in being able to see where your ranking is as a percentage of all the players in the game? I could add that as a plain number for each player in the score tables.

Yeah, I want to see where I fall relative to other players.

I just found the GOTM statistics page - the victory condition histogram looks good!

I do data analysis all the time, so I like to see different summaries. I'm probably in the minority here.

The score distribution is interesting because it shows that there are packs of players, as opposed to the expected smooth normal shape.

Here is another interesting graph - score vs time. Time does not always translate into score!

I think it would be interesting to look at victory condition vs hours played. I generally assume that Domination/Conquest is quicker in real time, but I wonder how much that is actually true.

Of course for some (like myself) the hours is not really accurate as the computer is left on while not playing, but I think the averages would tell us something.

I was thinking about that just after seeing the results. It would be interesting to see. Maybe it would burn it into my thick skull, that if I didn't rush my playing the way I do, I might just score a little better.

@bigchief: For that you need to see Jason score vs time per turn.
