Gotm 37 Final Spoiler - Game Submitted

Well I'm back after a LONG hiatus and the addiction is in full force. First thing, I really enjoyed this game. I don't think I played all that well, but I'm still in the process of relearning a few things.

I didn't take detailed notes, but a few things from memory.

It took me a bit to realize I was alone with Bismarck and that he was crippled by the poor start. I took territory early, but not nearly aggressively enough. I think I was concerned about taking on too many unproductive cities on his crappy land. I wasn't focused very well on the research side either and could have been a lot more efficient.

The remote AIs reached me pretty quickly and all three were very far ahead of me on the power graph and tech. Once I realized my military options were limited, I decided to make a beeline for space race. I built up my economy and spent a lot of effort spreading my religion around the world for the commerce. I ended up getting nearly every city on the planet under my religion by the end which was a nice boost with Wall Street in the shrine city. It also kept the more powerful AIs happy with me over the latter half of the game.

Once I figured out my plan for the end game, I got a lot more focused and managed to slowly tech, lightbulb, and trade my way into tech parity. During this time, I built a few modern units to take out Bismarck, but Cathy DOWed on him just prior. I had to jump in sooner than I planned to take my share of the spoils! This of couse slowed down my economy a bit dealing with some light war weariness.

I think Toku got Apollo first and both Napoleon and Cathy followed soon after. Toku had all 5 chassis built before I even finished Apollo. I did a nice job of timing my spaceship builds to tech completion and pulled a victory out from last place in score around 1952.

There was a ton I could have done better, so I'm glad I managed to eke out any victory condition. The lack of focus in the beginning nearly killed me. Pulling out the victory was that much sweeter because of it.

Thanks for the great map!

So here's a screenshot from my culture bomb on Tokyo :

A quick report.

Wanted to get a conquest victory, soon discovered we're alone with Bismark, so researched myself. Settled on spot, worker, boat, couple of warriors for settler protection, settler for copper-gold-wheat city, 2 more cities SE (on rice) and SW (near pigs), 1 NW (crabs, sheep, furs). Never started the Oracle - built in 18th century BC. Built GLib, used castes to get GS in Madrid and rice-city, GS-bombed Optics and Astro (2 for the latter), benefitted from overseas trade and kicked them when they were weak. While researching Calendar declared on Bismark, kept 2 cities closer to me, razed the rest. The upkeep was dragging me behind, so the war was mostly with cats, swords and elephants, with an occasional xbow; later maces, and near finish - conquistadors entered the stage.

Meanwhile Napoleon wiped out Cathy with her 5-cities empire. Impressive. Still, much unsettled space by AI.

Finished Toku and Napoleon island cities simultaneously at 1450 AD. Not the best date, sad to say, espscially against 3 AI, however I was disinterested with the old well-trodden Cavalry-by-Liber route. Never built a university, didn't finish the Liber.

Domination somewere in 1800s with no so impresive score result as i would like.

But as i said on the previous spoiler this game was quite chaotic and fast played for me. My pure play time was less then 8 hours. At 500 AD i have already overexpand(-25 gpt at 0% sci) after my first war with Bismark and on a way to get out of the whole tanks to Currency and coastal gold. My "research" strategy was based on poping up enough GS to blub up to Astro. Just when i got out of the econimic whole i make some 100 gold in the bank and unleashed the second and last war with Bismark(the only reson i didn't finish him in the first war was that my economy was very near to bankrupt and i can afford to spend money for units outside my culture borders ). In this second war i fase lb but they wasn't any problem for my cats/phants combo. I already had 4 accurate cat + some for suicide so the campaign went very smooth. The big reward was the GLH in Berlin. As most of the time i kept almost all Bismark's cities which combined with GLH bring me to top tech rate soon after.

Because i had 1 GA on low chances my first Caravel (around 1000 AD) was build just when Cathy arrived but i managed to get curcum navigation. Madrid give my 2nd GA before another GS which cost me the ability to trade Astro. Thats why i got Paper first then lblubed Edu (Lib was gone before 1000 AD) and follow the chemistry route.

The diplo situation was quite stable and peacefull and Napy was the only real thread for my because his power was x4 of mine. I lblubed once Astro too and build a grenadiers/expirienced phants/canons combo and invade Toku.

Conquistadors? Pfu i forgot for them - but even if i dont i wont use then at all for sea ivasions.

@DS :
Liberalism is not so important on Imm and Diety level IMO. THe key situation is when all the AI go for rifling while chemistry is quite nearer. Then even if you are backwards in overall techs you gain a great military advantage on The AI. This is not valid for BtS.

From there on the last 300 year were quite straight forward. Becuse i have capture all of my continent and use the peace period of building army and infra between 1000 AD and 1500AD i got a production supreority. So i build overwhelming army. I killed Toku with ease (i faced rifles only in few numbers), then i jump over Cathy and just when Napy turn have come the domination victory apear.

Well the result is not vey impresive compaired to some others but i like that i had the control of the game all the time. Some bad luck only prevent me to be quite faster - the two GA came just in time to not allow me to get the tech lead. With some better luck with this issue i could get some 200 years better finish date.

jesusin - you are a freekin genious! I knew you had it in you - to create the perfect war-map! At least for me it was one of the most entertaining war game so far in this series. There was one other Immortal game (Mehmed?) which was great fun, and WOTM3 was great as well with the disastrous starting area, and the Deity with Huayna Capac was excellent (grrr, I still remember Thorrez victory!), and GOTM8 (Huayna Capac, Continents, Emperor) which was THE game which totally humiliated me (space ship loss to Germany, my avatar is a screen shot where I nuke on of his towns in despair). This game reminds me of that - constant struggle from start to moder age. By the gods - give me more of these maps! :goodjob:

The truth is however that myself was the major contributor to the fun  I don't know what happened really, but I screw up the early game massively! My performance between 500 BC and 500 AD reminds me of my early CivFanatics game when I didn't have a clue what I was doing! How is it possible to play that bad? And it reminds me of when I read spoilers of Gosha, Lexad, Balbes, Obormot, and the other Kings of Speed, and I become embarrassing aware of my ineptitude.

My first spoiler ends where I am in a pitiful situation, and I know I've played bad. So, could it get worse? Yes of course. After meeting the others, I manage to trade me to almost parity, and was chasing Liberalism. Then disaster strikes 1210 AD:
Cathy-the-stinkeen-b1tch invades and razed Toledo, which is a size 17 city :faint: on the rice to the south.
What had I done to her? Plotting her downfall? Of course, but she could not know that, could she? :mischief: I was very close to smashing my computer with a sledge hammer, but then I realized I've never lost an Immortal GOTM month before, and this was not going to be the first. So I strike back and grab two of her cities, and make peace. Build up more units, redeclare and march on. Then I notice the French guy marching units to the frontier and:
Nappy-the-stinkeen-ba5tard declares!
No real problem, since I've got plenty of units in that area, and I capture a French city. Fighting two wars forced me to run 50% culture, since I had up to 25 War Weariness  This is more than 100%, so my research stopped, which let Toku race ahead of me.

To make a long story slightly shorter, I beat down Cathy, and Nappy, and Bismarck too. And then I attacked Toku from the sea (1900 AD) and razed all his coastal cities (artillery from galleons are OVERPOWERED, I'm glad they removed it in BtS). Once Toku was broken, I knew I had won the game, and the rest was just cruising to the end. I was limited by real time, else I would have captured Bismarck cities too.

And now the end part: When reading about this game, I decided to go for the cow, since the map setting was excellent for that. I did not imaging such a struggle though! And as it turns out, Harok made the FATAL decision to NOT go for domination in the 18th century  Why, Harok, why did you go for Cow too? At least you played a better game than me :goodjob:

After Action Analysis:

So, what went wrong? Perhaps playing Challenger was one part of it? Did the initial penalty really matter that much? I don't think so, although it would be a comfort :D I have compared the event log from Cactus Pete to see where we deviate. CP manages to churn out the first cities faster than me. This is probably due to the challenger penalty, but the main difference is obvious once the research rate is compared. I've extracted the techs from our event logs and we're pretty even up to turn 85. Then something happens: CP's research continues to grow, while my grows very slowly. Take a look at the data below:

I targeted GLib, while CP went for Calender/Currency, which gives a quicker boost. Also, CP decided to attack Bismarck at once, which was probably a good idea. CP's quicker research between 500 BC and 500 AD appears to be enough for having the upper hand once Catherine and Napoleon entered the scene. See attached screen shot.

Cactus Pete, can you please tell me how you managed to keep up the research between 500 BC and 500 AD (i.e before tech trading started)? Did you run a lot of cottages? Or did you run scientists in a lot of cities? I imaging that you managed to grow you cities once you had calender. Would it be possible for you to check your beakers-per-turn, city sizes, number of cottages and number of scientist you were running as of 1AD? :please:

jesusin - thanks for the map :goodjob:

The main reason is because an eptathalon requires a cow and not 2 domination victories.
