GOTM 44 Final Free-For-All

Guess the start was like most others. I built a warrior to scout and then a granary and settlers. My warrior quickly discovers that we are alone on a small barren island. My people need lebensraum to expand and prosper. We will not be able to build a world conquering force from this rock.

So my strategy quickly becomes to research mapmaking as soon as possible and from there to Republic. I get to mapmaking around 1250BC and immediately finish 2 galleys and send two settlers out to find more hospitable lands. I meet the greeks and americans. I am able to trade Mapmaking for all basic techs and gold. When I reach Philosophy around 850BC I am able to trade Code of Laws from Greece and Poly from US of A. By then I also meet Korea, France and India. Spain curiously hides up in their corner and despite being only 2 squares from Korea they have not made contact and I get to trade their contact around around, avoiding to spend any cash on Code of Laws and Poly.

QSC stats:
8 towns
14 population
2 workers
7 warriors (vets but 1)
3 galleys
1 granary
1 barracks

With time I settle 6 cities on the continent and rush build temples in a few of these. To get iron, amongst other things. This has a nice side effect by causing two-wheat-Sparta to join me in 590BC.

I discover Republic in 270BC. I need to save some more money for swords upgrades, and then I will be ready to attack Athens (TGL) and Paris (Pyramids!).

I declare on Greece in 190BC after establishing embassy and seeing that they only had two defenders in Athens. Unfortunately for me I see next turn that they had switched settler to hoplite and effectively they had 3 hoplites on that hilltop. Nevertheless I take the city loosing only 1 Swordsman. I intend to move capital to Athens during the next few turns. Free palace jump in 10AD after moving all my military into Athens.

After that I made good progress against remaining Greece, then France, India and the others. However the map was such that I was not going to reach my goal of early Conquest. I shut off research after Republic, and without the Lighthouse there was no way I could find the Iroquois. I got to see the borders towards the end of the game. Had I only built the Lighthouse early on...
So while suiciding off the coast to find the lost civ, I rush built temples using cash and my units to see if I could trigger domination on home continent. And I got to DOMINATION limit in 540AD. Not great. Had I had the Lighthouse to be able to attack Iroquois early on I think I could have gotten Conquest quite soon after.

I was going for 20k.

Captured Paris and most of France in the AA spoiler. I had all my hopes on one little elite bowman to get a MGL for a palace rush, but he couldn't do it. My 20k attempt was pretty much over at this point, so I jumped the Palace to Paris. I got Feudalism as my free tech and gifted Korea into the MA. They got Monotheism, so I was able to trade and start on Chivalry, which is discovered in 340AD.

I was in wars with Korea, America, and India, but never finished them of until later. When I got Cavalry, I upgraded about 16 knights and attacked Greece, bringing them down to one city. With Cavalry I conquered everyone except for Greece and Korea, keeping them alive for their free IA and MA techs.

Made the switch to Democracy and set the cows on the fields. Histograph win in 2050. :p

Just thought i'd submit this image. 8-)

Tiny Civilization?

One question, How do you buy an enemy city? I've never been able to do it.
Or selling a city, even conquering an enemy city it cannot be sold back. Not even for 1 gp or a world map.

The AI won't buy or sell cities, ever, at any price.

If you thoroughly trample an AI civ in war you might be able to force it to ceed you a city or two in return for peace.

If you capture a city from a hostile civ halfway around the world and don't want it, the only way to give it to another civ is to outright gift it to them. They'll refuse to make an offer on it no matter how little you'll accept.

The beginning went smooth compared to the conditions.
Build Colossus in Babylon and The Great Lighthouse in the second town.
Then came a time where I build some cities close to Greece, which gave me 2 culture flips but I was not focused enough.
Then took out India to get iron and horses.
I attacked Greece but those hoplites were really strong.
After Greece had gone, I had Military Tradition and the rest was easy then.
Domination in 1585 AD after I had the total continent.
Jason 6581
If I had focused on military earlier and had a MGL earlier (at about 1450 I got the first one) to rush FP, it would have been better, but I took it as a fun, sloppy game in between.

I think I'll set the record for latest Domination -- after 1830 :crazyeye:

DaveMcW -- 26 minutes?! Talk about fastest finish!

In the early 13th century, the dominance of Babylon had been established over the primary continent of this planet. Under Hammurabi’s supervision, new cities were being established at an increasing pace. The completion of Copernicus’ Observatory and JS Bach’s Cathedral pushed the science pace and happiness levels to new heights, but trouble was on the horizon. “We are running out of places to settle new cities” the advisor cautioned to Hammurabi and with that warning, the Babylonian military was again called to the front to provide new lands for the settlers. The technology deprived Spain was the target of the troops and following a proper declaration of war, Spanish pike-men began dieing to the onslaught of Babylonian knights. One by one, five Spanish cities fell until Hammurabi recognized a weakness in the defensive structure of Babylon. Many of the culturally critical cities of the continent were without defenders and the appearance of three Spanish galleys, hastened the signing of peace with Spain. New lands had been acquired and settlers hurried to fill in the gaps during the temporary window of peace.

With the discovery of Military Tradition in 1425 AD, the knight troops handed in their armor and lances and were equipped with rifles and in a blitzkrieg that would make Alexander proud, the entire American holdings on the continent were seize in successive days, including the capital, Washington, with it’s Great Lighthouse & Leonardo’s Workshop. Peace was then signed with America for two cities on the northern island as the troops headed for Spain to arrive in time to capitalize on the end of the peace treaty. Spain had advanced little since the last war and her few muskets fell quickly to the Babylonian Cavalry including the capital of Madrid with the Hanging Gardens, until in 1525 AD, Spain was but a memory. Isabella was relegated to the room next to Joan in Hammurabi’s private wing of the palace.

The completion of Magellan’s Voyage, Newton’s University and Smith’s Trading Post in successive years cemented Babylon’s power in research and economics. Peace and prosperity were now the ways of the future. With Babylon holding nearly 60% of the land on the map (and over 70% of the population), Hammurabi gave orders to feed the world and all of the existing mines were converted to farms and railroads were added everywhere. The completion of Shakespeare’s Theater and Universal Suffrage were window dressing on Babylon’s march to victory. During the 1700’s a pair of foreign cities (Bangalore & Thermopylae) with over 80,000 citizens revolt from the oppressors and join the Democratic People of Babylon. About that time the culture mark hits 75K and science is shut off in favor of spending cash on improvements. Even the military is sacrificed as infantrymen are drafted in the larger cities and sent to speed cultural improvements in remote cities. Having established a solid defensive front with Infantrymen in all border cities and a dozen veteran cavalrymen ready to speed by rail to any flashpoint, Hammurabi sat in relative peace waiting for his nation’s cultural dominance to be recognized. The completion of the Theory of Evolution led to the discovery of the Radio and Combustion, so that in the year 1820 AD, Hammurabi was able to announce to the world that his nation’s culture had convinced world that the Babylon way of life was the only way to happiness and with a flash of light Hammurabi was transported to a shuttle to return him to Alpha Centauri.

Industrial Period (PTW 1.27 Open - Class)

I entered the Industrial in 1605. I was at war for virtually the entire middle ages. There are only 2 of the remaining civilizations, India & Iroquois. I control the main continent and all surrounding small islands. I’m at war with India. They have been reduced to a few distant islands in the northwest quadrant of the map. I am currently engaged in battle in that area. Meanwhile, I have been building Cavalry & have been ferrying them towards the Iroquois mainland, but have not yet landed.

1630 – Troops land on the Iroquois mainland. They are comprised of 13 Cavalry & an elite Knight army.
1635 – Take the first Iroquois city (There only luxuries I think).
1640 – Achieve domination victory!

I had been aiming for a conquest victory, so I was a little surprised when that message popped up. I had checked a few turns back, and didn’t think I was that close to domination. Oh well, it was still a fun game. I was fairly pleased to achieve this basically at the start of the Industrial Age.

Final Stats:
10 hours 34 minutes & 9 seconds
Score – 1504, Hammurabi the Fair
Jason Score - 6334
55 cities, 1,062 tiles controlled, 11, 406 total culture, 144 units
India only had 2 island cities left & the Iroquois had 8 cities left

France had been my best friend all game. After taking out America, I had to sign RoP with them so I could get to Korea (pathetically weak), and Spain. By the time I was ready to tackle Spain, the Iroquois decided they wanted a piece of me. They didn't do a whole lot, just shelled my coast and took out some roads.

By this time I had switched from monarchy to republic at last. I resisted switching for a long time due to WW, but with the infrastructure in place I could now afford it, and the tech just poured in. I picked up Suffrage, Darwin and Hoover, wiping out the Spanish. I then took the war to the 'quois, picking up their second island. By this time I was around 60% domination.

Thus the French betrayed me and seized a couple cities. There were several turns of pretty much a stalemate, while I did get the cities back, I couldn't make progress...until I got tanks. With those, I was able to shred the French infantry and go over the domination. I had just picked up flight when the game ended in 1818.

1330 Firaxis, 5153 Jason. Meh.

edit: Got 4 leaders all game. The first was against the Greeks and was used to rush the FP in Eridu on the mainland. The second was against the quois and was sunk trying to get back home. The third and fourth were against the French. The last two were virtually at game end. The third built a tank army and the fourth moved the capital to Washington.

juballs, how the heck did you get a PTW save to load under Conquests? That shoulda been impossible.

Azzaman, very impressive culture win with 1 city! Did it really take you little over an hour to play? I can't even do the QSC that quick.

i played the whole thing in one shot, and much of the game was just hitting enter. i was very lazy as well, most of the time that i wasnt building wonders i was building wealth. if i bothered to micromanage my game probably would've reach two hours.

It took 35 hours of play for this game, I guess it will be one of the longest game in this GOTM.
That may be so, but not the longest by far: :p

Some of that is bogus, leaving civ running while doing something else, but not so much as to make a large difference. I'm really pleased with my result, but let's just say I hope I never have to play 100k again. :crazyeye: Not even the cow could be this bad...

Complete spoiler to follow.

Yours isn't the highest for this game either. By a long way ;)

For the record, the highest playing time we've ever recorded was for GOTM 18. Over 580 hours, or 24 days.

By the time I got off the island the Greeks had already settled the nearby peninsula. I started a war but managed to capture only one or two Greek cities. It takes alot of bowmen to finish off a hoplite. Settled a city or two up the coast. Attacked France and took Dijon only to have it flip later on! Spent ages staying out of wars and trying to get a tech edge. Could only manage parity with the Greeks but the Spaniards fell way behind. :satan: It took a couple wars to conquer Spain and I had to press on because of flips, finally marooning Isabella on some far off northern isle.

Met Hiawatha kinda late and his people were even more backward than the Spanish! So I took pity on them and gave them many techs. Wouldn't you know it, the Iroquois soon came to rival the Greeks in technology! :crazyeye:

Figured I'd play it out till the bitter end (2050 AD) but eventually realized I'd end up with a histographic LOSS if I didn't build a space ship. Managed to complete the get away ship just in time to win with less points than another civ! :p Do I get some kind of ambulance for that? :mischief:

You're in good company here:
For example: it's hardly imaginable that the AI didn't beat the next score.

Is there a chance that i could have the lowest winnig score ever?
Yes. The 20K victories in this game have all come in with very low Firaxis scores, of course. There's only one Jason score lower than yours as well - Zwingli in GOTM 18

Now my Firaxis 775 seems positively mediocre! I'm not sure if that's better than actually hoping for a shield or an ambulance...
