I started playing with a space ship victory in mind. I have played to about -1250.

One settler moved towards the visible hut and the other towards the 4 special site on grass. The hut gave Mapmaking. It could have been worse, though not by much, I could have gotten an even more worthless tech. Later hut luck was better. I got a supported chariot and an advanced tribe at the other end of the island.

I am in Monarchy now moving towards trade. Mapmaking allowed me to make a trireme faster than I would have otherwise. Using black clicking I found the one and only place where it could safely travel to the island on my west. I was going there for hut hunting, but I found Nishapur where a hut should have been!

Romans and Chinese have already started working on wonders which is unusally early for the AI.

I got 2 ruins of abandoned villages does that count as worse:rolleyes:

For the first one, no it does not. Mapmaking is not only useless that early in the game on a decent sized island but it also delays getting to Monarchy significantly especially in a deity game.

7 cities at 1000 BC and 18 cities at AD 1. To my surprise the 7th city did not trigger unhappiness as described in the Early Landing Games Strategy Guide, that kicked in with the 10th city and with 18 cities (still in monarchy) every initial citizen is unhappy. Maybe these thresholds depend on the map size?

A roman sneak attack reduced my ssc by 2 citizens in 100 BC (I turned them into allies afterwards), I'll have to see how fast the ssc can recover. I only dare to change to republic after michelangelo's chapel is built, probaly before shakepeare's theatre.
 
24 cities at AD 500 and in republic all of them are red, sucking up lot's of luxuries.

A nice little OCC game. I enjoy these Deity OCC games because the AI actually manages to research a few things along the way and grows a bit, and they tend to make things interesting at the end. All things considered, I am quite pleased with the result. No rivers, and the routes just never thrived - they stalled out at +18. There were a couple AI cities that got over size 8 but it wasn't worth trying to deliver to them by that time. Obviously no road or RR bonus (although the Romans did start some colonies on our island very late but at that point I wasn't in the mood to give their diplomats unfettered rail access to my city.

Ok, now that there are only Greeks and Vikings left, and the Chinese are nearly done, I will rush for Tactics to get Cavalry instead of dragoons, cancel the effect of their Great Wall and bribe some cities for faster conquest.

1794 - Destroyed walls in Trondheim! Bought Roskilde for 699G.
1796 - storm of Trondheim. With heavy casualties it was taken, Vikings fall. END OF THE GAME

Maybe I should have switched to Democracy in the end to make some score on celebrations, but was too laze to do that.
All in all, the game was fun while capturing Romans and then leading war on all fronts. However, in the end it got boring to move dozens of units around.
 
Slightly bad luck at huts and outposts - or maybe deity level is just harder than I remember it ? Conquest in 300 AD, without much effort at a big score. I heard the staff was working on the HOF, but that was months ago IIRC... some news would be appreciated. :mischief:

Deity is harder as it is supposed to be. Your result is as always impressive though. So far every one else (that has reported here) is beyond 1500.
I am at 1550 and in Fundamentalism battling Mongols, Japanese, Vikings, and Greeks. Romans and Chinese are my friends and big time trading partners.

There are no programs that I know of other than the game and the standard map editor that shipped with it. The technique is called Map Analysis.

Here is an oversimplified brief explanation:
Look up the coordinates of the starting position and paint what you see in the map editor on a map the same size as that of the game. Change resource seed till you find matches.
 
There are helper programs for specials. I think "hutfinder" by Scouse Gits does it. I never got that to work on my machine though, so I sometimes use "civ2admin" by SlowThinker. You can find them both at Apolyton's GL, if not at CFC.

These are not "must have" items, though. If you look at a revealed map, you'll see that specials occur in groups of 8, and nearby ones are a knight's move apart. Knowing that pattern, plus normal exploring, is usually enough. I rarely bother to plant a city in the "sweet spot" between 4 specials, though that is important for OCC or maybe a SSC.
 
Hutfinder is my map-helper of choice. You need to find a hut first for it to work. Games like this where there is one in the start position are a bonus. Once you find that first hut, it can effectively give you the location of all huts and specials based on the known hut/specials patterns. I really like it because it has a nice graphical interface.

Supposedly Slowthinker's app can tell you not only where the specials are, but whether they are whale or fish type, and I think it can start giving at least some information when you find the first special (instead of having to find a hut), but I never figured out how to use it right.

Both were made available on threads at the Apolyton forums.

You can do all that and more with just the map editor. For example, when the initial info is inconclusive, you can still know all the possibilities. I doubt if any application is flexible enough to give you that.
 
but to use the map editor, you have to remember which axis to divide by two, or is it multiply by two? Anyway, it's more work than typing in the coodinates of a hut and getting a nice pretty picture. ;)
