I hate the Aztecs. Scumbags keep sneak-attacking me even though I have the UN. :mad: The Aztecs are officially ON NOTICE.

I was doing OK for a while, especially for my first time playing King, but the Vikings have a 39/7/7/0/0/0 spaceship already and there's no way I can get to Trondheim before they build, launch, and land. Time to throw in the towel on this one.

I think I'll just crank up Cheat mode and rain nuclear holocaust down on the Aztecs.

One has been to Rome and it is on its way back. The other is on its way back from its second trip to Aztec land. I definitely need more and that is a priority. I need to get my settlers off my homeland and into the adjacent islands and I need to make more deliveries.

Having said that I usually work with a small navy and that is probably one of my weaknessses.

I always had trouble managing a navy too. Don't know if it's an actual weak spot in my game or if I'm just impatient--it takes a long time to build the caravans/freights and settlers/engineers, then load them onto a boat, then move across the water to another continent...

I'd guess he left out a number of the early preliminaries. I usually try the same, avoiding the "military" techs until I can trade someone for Tac.
 
I'm pressed for time this month, so finished last night before being away from a keyboard for the rest of the month. Only way to play was conquest in those circumstances, so I adopted the usual crusader spree. A LOT of slogging east and west but finally managed to subdue them all. Persians were the hardest to get to given their large continent with messy terrain, but bought a few cities and built some boats on their inland sea. Made peace with them finally allowing me to find their last city. Not a particularly early finish (after 1000AD) given the distances but didn't have time to finish any other way. Would have been nice to get some of those huge trade bonuses I'm sure were about with a big ship chain, but might replay it if I get the chance.

Well consider that in GotM 66 on Diety Level I finished 1778 on King level finishing in 1863 has to be bad. Things did seem to go according to plan. So what went wrong?

I'd say not enough settlers/new cities early. I was only 3rd in population when I got Marco Polo(150BC)

I'd say I got caught up building wonders when I should have been building vans for trade, those wonders are so tempting. Also in the wonder building stage should have been spending all my money accelerating development

Then towards the later stages I had my luxury too high at the expense of science. More science & the earliear mentioned more trade, would have speeded up the tech and the space race.
 
LV: Criticizing your games is a great way to improve. I agree with your conclusions. Though I'm no landing expert, IMO early growth and lots of overseas trade are the keys. Not sure you played worse in GOTM 67 than before - sometimes the map, hut luck, etc can affect your results. I also took longer in 67 than 66.

1. Mining the wheat as the first act of the none settler you kept was a bad idea. At the begining you should mostly be just building roads. Irrigating the wheat does actually provide an extra food and is justified in this case but roads come first. Mining it into silk should have been left for mid game.
2. You built your second city in -2950. That is quite late for this set up.
3. You built the last city in your home island in +1750. Why not sooner?

1. Mining the Wheat is a bit extravagant I'll admit. I thought of it as a mini-Colosus getting an extra 2 trade arrows.
2. I built 2 warriors first(before settler), was that wrong? didnt really have the money to rush a settler, maybe rush a warrior as a first step
3. Yeah its just seemed like bad territory, but then that whats engineers are for, to fix the bad territory. When I did build it quickly grew, eventually reaching size 13. edit:I just calculated my GOTM score, very low :cry: I think the lack of building on the home island is just a symptom of my lack of building cities in general, just too few engineers/settlers built for this purpose :nuke:

It's a good start for me with 22 cities in 1 AD and I'm searching Democracy. I don't have a big army and I consacrated my production in devolopping. I hope that I'm going to realize an earlier landing. The map is impressive and when I exchanged my map with Persian it was like if it was an other world because it was very far.

Silk is very valuable indeed but at the begining your primary, if not the only, concern should be rapid expansion. Silk only gets you one food and slows your growth down. If I get a Silk, I do occasionally use it at the begining. But spending time creating one is certainly not warranted till later.

One would have been sufficient. Producing a settler takes long enough to give your warrior a chance to explore the vicinity of your first city. Your primary goal for the warrior should be to locate the site of your next city. Meanwhile, if you are keeping a second None settler you should build a road towards that site allowing your settler to get there more quickly.

LV - Much better ! IMO you should also notice your stats earlier, say at 1AD. I bet you can make 20 cities by then [doubling every 20 turns or sooner, until about 1AD], maybe with a few overseas delivieries, too. Then, meeting your other goals, such as Wonders and techs, will probably be easier.
 
I played till +1250 over the weekend. Space race just got started. In terms of the number of turns, this is the earliest ever for me. It came at the price of further expansion though; I added only 10 cities in 25 turns.
