Did you learn anything?

I'm counting on another shield. Crappy space victory 1934 AD with ridiculously low score.
I think key to victory on this map was how to handle your neighbour. I stole a worker from him, he sued for peace later. I decided to expand and finish him with Maces, but he attacked around 1AD. I got mad and after Construction went for full-scale war. It took around 1000 years with breaks to finish him off. Then I was a little behind other AIs and discorauged. Any type of victory would be late. I almost blowed it when Cathy was elected as leader after I built UN. But she destroyed her chances for diplo vic when she decided to settle her quarrel with Chinese (he voted for her, not me).

What I learned? Well, forum was some time off and I didn't wanted to wait, altough I remember vaguely something about anarchy and GAs in Vanilla. So I started GA and adopted 3xFree. Guess what? 3 turns of anarchy during GA...

 Trust me, I've been there and done that, several times.

Yeah, when you play vanilla, you soon start to miss the improvements made in BTS.

Anyway, very late (1952) space victory (don't be so sure about the shield, Greeder). After settling my side of the continent, I wiped out Louis with knights. Started meeting other civs about the time he was dead. I probably should have teched to Cavalry and romped everyone else, but I opted for the spaceship.

I made a mistake somewhere along the line and got a declaration from Huayna. Fortunately, the stack he sent over was ridiculously small and I was able to emergency-draft enough infantry to stop him. I even took a couple of cities from him in retaliation. Also, I was first to astro (libbed it), so I managed to claim the unsettled island in the west - except for the SW corner, where Cathy sneaked a settler.

Speaking of Cathy, she was a monster in my game. She had given Monty a beating before I had even met them and later she killed Mansa.

A 1948 space victory for me after a frustrating miss at a diplo victory in the early 1800s. I was looking great for diplo, I'd killed off France in 2 stages between 100 bc and 1000 ad (in retrospect I should have just finished them off with the first war but I settled for peace for techs) and had great relations with all.

Around 1750 with UN under contstruction I was attacked by the "pleased" Chinese. No idea why. The war was a waste of a diplo victory chance and they never accepted peace. I didn't bother to go and actually attack them thinking if I just left them alone and sank any of their transports they would eventually give me peace but no, even 200 years later they wanted 1000 gold for peace. I guess in the future if someone DOWs me without warning or reason I have to actually go take a couple cities before they will give me peace.

For a while it looked like I was going to lose to a diplo victory as Cathy took control of the UN after I finally adopted a religion (once I gave up on a diplo victory) and I never did see a war between any of the other civs.

Anyway the game itself was very fun, thanks to all who put it together!

1942 Space Victory for me. I'm beginning to discern a pattern here....

Raw score 4861, final score 22487. Cathy was a monster in my game as well, so I made sure to stay on her good side. In the end, we even had a defensive pact (with her having about 4x the army of me from what I could tell).

This seemed like a typical cIV victory for me.... take over the island, build a spaceship. I am curious to learn what the top players ended up doing with their games....

Slow and crappy game, nothing much to tell about. 1630AD domination with cats and cavalry. Cathy was a monster (leader in score and even tech) for a long time until she got hit by my armies.

Map was nice and I found it more challenging than most monarch games I've played, probably due to very sloppy start.

Yes, I have been trying to find the right balance.

I felt that I made the last few GOTM a bit too easy, and not reflecting the advertised difficulty, so maybe the pendulum swung back too far the other way.

Well had to stay up half the night to finish this and when I submitted it showed still 1 day 5 hrs to go so perhaps I needn't have missed out on my sleep.. :)

Not alot to say about the game I settled in place. Oracled CoL and played friendly with Loius for a long time whilst settling my half of the island. Idea was to go for Cavs and try for domination. Was a bit slow as ended up using tanks and bombers at the end. Domination in 1910.

Highlight was when I attacked Louis forgot to check for Defensive Pacts and ended up in a war with the Chinese which didn't help as I wanted to finish off Cathie first.

After 1 AD:

- I prepared a troop to conquer this island/continent. In exactly 1 AD I declared against Louis XIV and initiated the capture of cities :trouble:. Around 1000 AD the French Empire was dead! One more Barb city and another founded: 13 or 14 cities in this continent! :)
- After that I was very confused about what to do ! So I tried Diplo with mistakes. It took a long time to meet the others AI's and stay friends. In fact, I don't know how to maintain the right contact to have the votes... Just before the building of The United Nations, I made the worst mistake of this game: a contact with Mansa Musa. This affected the Diplo: -4 with all other Empires for traded with the worst enemy :shake:. In the first election all voted in Cathy...
- After that Diplo wouldn't be the way... So Space Race or time. Then Cathy initiated the travel to space and in 1888 AD all the members changed the votes to Huaina: It was the end of the game [pissed]...

- After conquering the continent in 1000 AD, I guessed that would be late to try a Domination. But the dates were different than normal in this game: Asterix in 1630 AD and Sleepless in 1910 AD. Maybe would be a better intencion than what I used (and I still lost )! Definitively I have much to learn!!!

If so, then not by too much. What exactly did you do?

Not much really.

The starting BFC makes such a big difference, so this game you had a not-so-good BFC.

Also, the locations of the AI. Starting on the same island as Louis, he isn't Monty, but he is a lot worse than Gandhi.

Just finished and uploaded my game...a few hours before deadline. Interesting setup. After a slow start, went for a labor-intensive Conquest with Cavalry and Cannons. With a lackluster 17th century finish, I'm hoping our expert warmongers (Jovan, Zamint, CP & co) went for Domination instead. ;)

Why is everybody mentioning Chinese? I never saw them..

1635 Dom...Asterix just beat me date wise. Actually though I was going for score and made the usual mistake I make near the end by settling some cities without checking the land %. I flipped Dom the turn before taking Mansa's last two cities, including a very large Tim. Scores seem smaller on Vanilla. I expected to finish later in the 17th with more pop. Ofc, I expect the usual suspects will somehow win 1AD Conquest or 600AD Domination.

Yep, Cathy was very large in my game. I waited until the usual Cav before attacking anyone. Cathy actually DOW'd on me after I took one of the last French cities near her borders. I knew she was in WHEOORN, but surprised she attack me really - my power was astronomically larger than hers despite how big her empire. I was just about to attack her anyway and ships were on the way, including the force already there. I bribed in Monty, what little good that did and then attack him not long after to kill a galley with a settler coming my way.

Basically just a slog through a very large Russia (didn't bother with siege). Cathy finally got Knights about midway through the war and they are actually a pain despite the Cav superiority, simply because they get behind you and make you worry about defending captured cities. Monty was a bit easier (left him with one heavily culture pressed city next to Capac, one of his flipped).

Healed a bit and set a large stack over to Mansa to take him out completely. Best he had was Muskets/Pikes. His cities fell easily and Frigs help bombard. OFc, I didn't finish him off due to stupidity.

Blew the AIs away in tech. Capac had Constitution near the end and DR, ofc, but otherwise I had a very strong tech lead.

Capac was darnn near useless. I really wanted to kill him. For some reason he's really stingy on vanilla and can't be bribed into wars unless Friendly. I always stayed 1 point from friendly with him, but hilariously the turn he actually got to +10 he begged Rep Parts which I declined.

Interestingly, it appears you can access all AIs with galleys. If I'd known that, I might have changed my strategy.

I did take 2 barb cities on the lone island and settled one city at the end. Another settler just arrived but did not get a chance. Barbs were pretty hairy on that island.

Fun game and pretty brutal for Monarch, although I always feel deficient when playing sub-BTS.

War weariness is just ridiculous on Vanilla.

Lymond, i am guessing from your report that chinese land was overtaken by Cathy. Otherwise chines were the 2nd AI accesible by Galleys. They were immideately SE of Louis. And I am going to doubt anyone got a domi before 13thCenury. Logistics.

I am reporting a unfinished game but managed to submit unlike last time.

I really liked this map and thought it was a perfectly balanced challenge. AI were still weak but not artificially. Poor mansa, for a change he was the backward AI in this game....likely due to all the Jungle. Of course I did bring him to more modern times...relatively speaking since I never left Renaisance. Thanks for the map neil.

I must report of my new found respect for Louis. First, He Dowed me when I was building cats and Elepahnts and he only had swords (may be it is madness). But that was no biggie. But what his Archers did to my chariots were impressive. I sent about 4 in pairs to pillage and he attacked with his archers and killed my poor horses. :D. I never pillaged. He had some good RNG. However, Louis never got to know LB's.

By the time I gave up on the game, my calvary units and cats were about to attack cathy from former Aztec lands to the south and from the remaining Chinese lands in the north. I took 4 chinese cities after killing off Luois earlier. Those cities got me Gems and 2 Dye's.

Sadly it was midnight and I had to stop. Fun game. This is two games in a row I ran out of time, oh well, next time.

In my game the chinese capital was Shangai. I learned from the replay feature that Beijing had been razed by the Aztec, in the BC's IIRC.

Yep, I see now that China died in 560AD, which is kinda  , as evidence to my poor scouting. I did send a WB that way once, but I think it died to a barb galley. At that point I was focused on setting up to eliminate Louis and I had met all the others AIs. The Chinese leader must have been pinned in with a long war, although it is odd he did not get a wb up my way.

ha..i was kinda exaggerating there htadus
