Where did you settle?
ANy problems so far?

My situation at 1 AD: 5 cities and two settlers out there to found cities 6 and 7. Louis has respected our border (we have the continent/island nicely divided in half), so there has been no need for aggression - yet. Either of us hasn't met a third civ, which means that he won't trade techs with me. After I found the last two cities, I'll have settled pretty much all of the land on my side, so I'll probably enter war mode at some point.

I settled 1N, on the wine. By 1 AD, Louis and I have divided the continent between us and are coexisting peacefully enough. I have five cities, with an Academy in Athens helping me to build a tech league over him. I still have no idea who else is out there.

Bah! Peacemongers! Settled plains hill west of cow. Now XIV is history -- 8 cities, three with French heritage -- and the Greeks are preparing to rule the world.

Good show, Z. Nice of the barbs to settle in the desert for you. [BTW, you're needed briefly at X-team.]

XIV spammed units like it was BtS when I attacked him. Did you have same experience?

He did have a lot of archers and my chariots attacked at horrible low odds (I lost around 15 against France  ), but he kept moving them out of the cities towards my undefended cities and workers, so apart from Paris he only had 2 archers in each town when I attacked. ;)

Hope to take out China with HAs soon. :mischief:

Challenger Saved Game

The Wonder that I wanted went early, so I grabbed 2 other decent Wonders instead and am working on a 3rd one. I've mostly filled up my area and am building Phalanx to go after Louis next. He does have Monarchy, so it will be a touch-and-go game to see whether or not he gets Feudalism before I can get my warring going.

I'll have to put the game on pause due to other commitments, so I might not finish it, but it has been a fun game so far, challenging enough with the Barbs and some close calls where I had to sacrifice some units just to keep my Cities, thus I'd like to finish the game off if I can squeeze in the time.

I do share a State Religion with Louis, so I hope to be able to trade peacefully with him before having to declare war. I think that he has built me an Academy so far, too, thus I really need to get my war game going.

Warmongers :)

Going by memory.

Can not remember if I got CS sling or not. But SIP and did the typical worker first start. Second city went south by the gold, corn and flood plains. Third to east to discourage Luise but he founded a coastal city to south west of his capital. Then I messed up and settled a city to west that messed up my city plan. I was making so many mistakes, I finally decided to stop the game and that same turn Luise completed the Mids. Ok may be I will play untill 0AD and ended up settling two more so so cities to south along the coast while building up the Army. I believe I had currency, Alpha, MC at the point of stopping. Capital had an academy. Another GS is waiting (I think) and can build WE.

I am not sure how I want to finish this game. War or Peace? I guess it is time to open the save again.

The beginning and cities:
- Scout SE (hills) / Settler SIP
#1- Athens SIP (4000 BC) – Worker / Warrior / Warrior / Settler
#2- Sparta SE (2080 BC) – 1 corn, 1 cow, 2 gold :)
#3- Thermopylae (1160 BC) – 1 corn, 1 sheep, 1 elephant

Technologies, Wonders and Great Persons:
- The Wheel / Pottery / AH / Minig / BW / Myst / Agric / Writing / Meditation / Priesthood / Mathematics / Masonry / Construction / Sailing...
- No Wonders and no Great Persons

The game:
- The barbarians: a few archs and warriors, 1 galley
- Only Louis XIV was contacted
- I did some tests with this kind of map and in all of them came the STRIKE! So I decided build few cities and prepare slowly a troop to conquer this continent. I waited the coming of catapults to start the war. Arrived late, but finally I'm ready and I'll start right now: exactly in 1AD :trouble:
- My Army: 6 cats, 4 phalanxs, 9 axes and 9 chariots...
- The intencion is to conquer all the cities from Louis and after try a Diplo!!!

1 AD:
- 3 cities (all founded)
- Pop 7 / treasury 2 / 4gpt at 0% (here comes the STRIKE!)
- Sailing (61 turns)

1 AD:
- 3 cities (all founded)
- Pop 7 / treasury 2 / 4gpt at 0% (here comes the STRIKE!)
This sounds very bad. Very, very bad...

I think I'm playing my crappiest game in a long time. If I remember, I only had 4 cities (+2 settlers on the way) in 1AD. At least the capital is around 15 pop with plenty of mature cottages (bure + HR) but it's not helpful enough to compensate all that bad playing.

- I did some tests with this kind of map and in all of them came the STRIKE! So I decided build few cities and prepare slowly a troop to conquer this continent. This was a mistake. Each city/pop allows you more units. had you done more cities and fewer/needed units for peace time duties would have given you a bigger empire with the ability to build a sizable army fast

- My Army: 6 cats, 4 phalanxs, 9 axes and 9 chariots...
So the way it look like, you slowly started paying unit maintanance untill you were down to 0% science and 4 gpt. You are probaby paying about 18 gpt for unit maintanance and will start to pay unit supply for units above 4 outside the culture border. That is going to be ugly very fast.

- The intencion is to conquer all the cities from Louis and after try a Diplo!!!
You really need to explore to make friends as early as possible for diplo BTW in vanilla you actually do not need AI to vote for you to win the UN. Just need the vote via domination.

Good luck and blitz. You way out fast.

Excellent hints, Htadus. You have every reason!!!

- Before reading this post, I finished the game and wrote in the Final Spoiler. It could be better, but I made several mistakes... :(

- Reading now and thinking about what you told, it seems to me that you forecasted exactly what occurred ! And you're right in all hints. Now I understand some mistakes: I have paid a very high price to maintain units well before my real intencion of waging war. Instead, building more cities and preparing them would be the better way to wait the Cats and prepare my army. About Diplo I need to understand how works the positive votes...

- It's true Asterix: it was a very, very bad beggining :(

Thank you guys, I'll pay more attencion in this details!!! :goodjob:
