Banach - I can't play these days because of MacOSX issues, but I enjoyed your massive empire very much. I thought you did an excellent job building your civ, especially from the middle game on. I have a few suggestions for the early game, which was always my best part :D

It was pusillanimous of Duke to not give the Germans a military unit. And I think he was tempting us with the whale. Even so, I think you settled too soon. There are two river complexes and one of them could have used the whale also, plus the southern one looked large from the opening position. One of them could well have had a forest hex. The added arrow from the river tile is very noticeable in the early game, and the advantage of a forest hex is of course production, and in particular the ability to turn the size 1 settler trick which would have put you many moves ahead. I would have gone south to get started on the big river system - of course I have no idea how that would have turned out. IMHO there was no real need to worry about barbs on King level for a while.

Solo's guide is fascinating, but it was never revised after 6 months of comparison games. We learned a bunch of things from that. Prioritizing Trade and MPE emerged as the single fastest strategy - even before Map making - one of the AI will usually have MM and will be happy to trade it. I sometimes got MPE by 1400 BC, but it usually was too early - about 1100 BC seemed to maximize its utility.

Also, some months later Slow Thinker posted a heretical EL game in which he built Pyramids (!) and expanded like crazy only beginning serious moves towards trade and conquest in about 1AD. It's somewhere on Apolyton. For me that turned the lean, elegant Solo approach on its head.

The advantages of Monarchy are that you get there sooner and have better production. Early republic does not put you in position to take advantage of WLTCD, because your cities are too small to celebrate to size 7. And the production hit is murder. You get more efficient trade advantage out of more cities faster, especially on King.

So I think you would have gotten your core set up more efficiently by (1) moving to one of the river complexes, (2) using the size 1 settler trick if possible, (3) beelining Monarchy, then Trade, (4) Build MPE by about 1100BC, (5) spend no time building anything but Settlers and caravans before MPE, and avoid building roads until 1500BC unless you can see a clear turn-saving movement advantage, (6) Build HG instead of temples. I couldn't see whether you built it at all.

I wish I could play this one :( :( :(

Thanks Grigor! Don't see you posting on here very often, but I very much appreciate your praise and suggestions. I've always considered you to be an excellent EC player, which entails great early game skills. Since I know that's my weak point, I'll follow your advice closely next game, and hopefully land MUCH earlier. No, didn't build Hanging Gardens-will try next time. Sorry to hear about your MacOSX issues. Hopefully you can join back in at some point. I think I might play another game with these settings and try to apply your suggestions. I really need to focus and land before 1000 AD. I believe I've lost the EL challenge I issued for this GOTM, but there's always next month. :) Hopefully, with your input, I may be successful!

Well, I just finished and I must say that I am pleased with my final results.
While I wasnt competitive with Banach or Magic for landing date, I did land alot sooner than I have any other time! :D With a LOT more fine tuning I think I can make a good competitor for EL. Thanks Banach for the trading tips (and anything else I might have gleaned from you ;) )

I'm getting closer to landing, however I'm not going to beat your landing dates. I'm on about 1420 with about 9 techs left to learn. I'm getting a tech every turn through trading, and 40% science, but it's not going to be enough to launch at 1500ad. I think I lost my way a bit between 0-1000ad, I probably should have gone for magellans and democracy quicker, I always seem to struggle under Republic.

I've got quite a large civ so far, and I'll probably try and boost my score by building a bigger ship. I've had no conflict of any sort with other civs and only 1 or 2 barb incidents.

I'm humbled. I was playing for landing and got automobile around 1300 AD. You got it not much later with only once city. Quite amazing, Ali. Looks like I have a lot of improvement to do before I can be competitive with you. Fortunately, I got some input from Grigor and think I can do much better next time. Good job! :goodjob:

LANDED IN 1471

First of all, Good job! :goodjob: You landed earlier than me, so I'll have to try harder on the next GOTM. Second of all, wow. :crazyeye: 190 cities? You managed quite an enormous empire, Magic_gorter. I only had 15 cities. Hope you enjoyed this game of the month as much as I did. Next month I'm going to try to run hyper-expansion as perfectly as I can post-automobile. We'll see how it works out.

Thanks Banach. I play a little different lately when I play EL cause I also try to get a good GOTM score. This is the main reason to play with big empires. And after missing purple I had no other choise then a big empire (knowing that harder research only can give me 1-2 techs every turn). However I should improve my trading game...that way I could have landed more then 10 turn earlier. I started to late with masive trade (around 1000 ad) and had not much improvements like superhighways. I'm practising a new game where I try to play with more trade from the start to improve this. If it's going well I try it with some GOTM-games. Next GOTM I have not much time..so I probably play conquest or OCC.

Hope that you're hyper-expansion will work...it's a probably a good way to grow big in a short time.

I tried to get some early trade routes going, but I struggled to find a route to the Babs which slowed me down. In hindsight maybe setting up quick trade routes with the Carthags would have been a better idea. I also built colossus first over Marco's. This was probably a mistake as Early on colossus on gives a couple of extra arrows. I should have built settlers into munich to build it up, but I thought of it too late.

At this point I didn't seem too far behind the others who tried for an early landing. I probably should have gone for democracy earlier. I delayed it until magnetism because of caravels causing unhappiness, but looking back the cities had pretty much stopped celebrating by then and corruption was costing me quite a lot.

I probably could have traded more in the 1000-1200's, this cost me a few turns to complete it. I also could have built more cities, but there's a limit how many I can reasonably look after in a month!

After a very peaceful game, The americans just seemed to go on a stealing spree towards the end, so I end to take them out. This caused problems as most of my trade arrows were with the americans, so I missed out on a few celebrations towards the end.

Hopefully the purple Civ will be in for the next Spaceship game.

Hello old timers !!

I have not been able to submit my last two games ( 80 and 81 ) , by the dead line , so yesterday I signed on to see if game 83 was " On "...
Well, I found out that game 82 is in my favorite range...missing one civ.
I have become real good at bringing back to life a missing CIV.
Im not sure If I will have the time to end the game by this weekend....
So this will may be just a practice ....another exercise

I downloaded the game at 9 Am and I decided ( in he beguinning ....) to just do an " Excercise " on bringing Purple into the game.

By 11 AM playing non stop, and making a few saves ( I am not good at keeping a log, except based on saves), I manged to bring Purple back into the game by taking Rome and creating a civil War.

Now its about 600 AD and having a Science City, Purple in the game ....Im considering playing the game a few more hours, I know the dead line is on Saturday....so I may ask for some extra time to finish the game within the next week.

Duke ? If I dont finish the game by saturday can I submit my last save until then ....then finish the game early next week ??

Thanks

I didn't have time to play this GOTM when it came out. But when I saw everybody playing for landing, I thought it would offer a good chance to learn and compare. Now it seems we have the OK to (re)play this GOTM, so I took the chance, and it's been fun. I'm guessing that most GOTM 82 players have lost interest in it by now, so I won't write a super-detailed log unless someone is actually interested.

4000BC: Berlin (1) ... can't do the size one thing from this site AFAIK.
2250BC: Monarchy
2050BC: Frankfurt (5)
1250BC: Trade
1200BC: 11th city, no HG yet, time to make some vans and WoWs.
975BC: MPE (maps, misc tech trades over next few turns)
800BC: Pyr
700BC: Barbarians defeat Washington and the USA splits. Hello Sioux!. Also,
lit->phil, first boat, and first barracks RB'd.
525BC: LH, 17 cities ... not great growth.
325BC: Switch to Republic; maybe too soon. Some vans sent out.
225BC: Sioux defeat USA (and Persia is born). HG allows vertical growth.
125BC: 1st two vans, 200g+200g.
AD 1: Built Colossus in a budding SSC just offshore (away from the ICSness). Pleasant surprise #2.... The SSC supplies Hides!. I built a Hides van there almost every turn until the supply dried up in AD 800, by disbanding units there and IRBing. This was a huge drain on my civ until about AD 300, but once those vans arrived at Boston, the game played itself. In AD 1, I had 29 cities [low - I wanted about 50], 766g, 5 WoWs, 20 adv, 8 boats, 6 vans and the SSC was size 8 (no aqueduct/etc yet). IIRC I was at peace with all the AI except Carthage, which wasn't really a problem.

Not much happened for 200 years, while my SSC made Hides and I tried to make a decent ship chain to Boston. Not so easy in a Republic, with only one boat per port city.

AD 240 (approx): 1st two SSC vans pay 337g each, and SSC pauses for an aqueduct. Rome builds GL and several AI compete for CO/etc, so I have to rush for that. I've bribed Washington from the barbs to ease deliveries to Boston. I've had science at zero (to pay for Hides/etc) so I haven't gotten many new techs. Possibly, I stuck with the Hides strategy a bit too long, but it did pay off as planned (or better).

AD 300: CO
AD 440: Shakes, and SSC gets harbor. I can easily get 1 adv/turn now just from vans, so I often keep science at 0%. Some non-urgent vans form a waiting line near Boston.
AD 500: 51 cities, 15S, 29boats, 51vans, 30adv, 2000g, sanitation.
AD 560: INC, chivalry.
AD 580: Spain builds GW. Navigation - I always dread this phase, with the low van payoffs, but there are so many spare vans now, it is still easy to maintain 1 adv/turn.
SSC gets a library (it wasn't really an SSC til then, I guess). Science is raised from 0% to about 60%.
AD 620: Mike's. SSC gets Univ.
AD 680: Leo's. Industn, and next turn corpn (freights)
AD 740: Mags
AD 760: WS. Sioux build KRC (expired).
AD 780: Switch Republic to Democracy.
AD 800: SSC finally stops supplying Hides, but I've built about 30 and probably still have 10-15 of those, paying about 900g each at Madrid. It's approx size 20 now.
AD 860: CfC, which should finally allow celebrations and growth.
AD 900: The game goes on. Have 51 techs, and DV next turn. Hoping for 1 more per turn til done, or maybe 2 per, if I can increase science just a bit.

Well, this seemed to take forever, but I finally finished. The highlights:

920: DV
1000: 112 cities, machine tools, 34 eng, 79 freight, 36 transports. I was getting 2 advances per turn for approx 5 or 6 turns, before I realized it wasn't worth it, keeping the science bar so high.
1020: AS
1060: HDam
1070: Romans build SunTzu
1090: SETI
1130: JSB (couldn't decide whether Theo+JSB was worth it...)
1140: Sioux build Eiffel. I build Apollo. A few AI's started stealing techs, so I declared war on them (howies vs archers) and grabbed any city that wasn't a Hides destination.
1210: Launched a 33/16/3 ship
1211: UN
1212: I take Carthage and the Sioux capital (etc) including Eiffel and KRC.
1213: Oracle (expired); Sioux destroyed.
1214: MP + SoL; Cathaginians destroyed (and almost the Spanish).
1215: Landed.

I haven't counted my 1215AD cities yet, but I had about 170 about 5-10 turns ago. I had 26 WoWs and all the techs but 2. I only lost about 5 units, as the AI was pretty frriendly throughout the early/mid game, and I had the better units after that.

I haven't read the other logs yet, but am curious to compare. I felt I was lucky wrt the purple civ and Hides, but that the game moved a bit slowly, maybe from the lack of huts.
