Gotm 97 - Spoiler

An interesting GOTM. At the start it was hard to know what units would be needed to capture AI cities, with no robotics or advanced flight, the alternative, stealth bombers were expensive and tanks are not much good against city walled defender (which I assumed the AI would build).

I formulated an island hopping plan involving stealth bombers and paratroopers for the attack and capture, and to build cities 6-8 squares from each other to allow both the troops and bombers to jump along finding AI cities on the way. I hadn't fully appreciated how big the map was, and although this took time, it worked in the end.

The only Wonder that seemed to help was magellans, and I built that very late, for a higher score cure for cancer and early pyramids helped. UN was not much help as the AI wouldn't swap maps.

I'm almost finished and played totally different. I went first for Apollo Program and got the complete map. Then I launced six ships with an engineer and freight on it. When landing near the capitol cities (they all had one city and not build more). I build first a spy to see what was in the city. A few cities are down with combination of cruise misile and a paratrooper. Only one city is on a river tile and did resist me. I now have to build more units to get it down......

I finished my game. My strategy is descriped in the post above this one. The last city had more defenders and realizing that with the Darwin wonder you get two free techs I did got my howitzers it's was an easy victory. Here is my log....

Hi Guys and any Gals out there conquesting these new worlds.
I finished in June of 69. I guess about 120 turns after Gorter. I still dont have this speed play down that you fellas thrive and conquest by.
I wanted the Pyramids first to quickly accelerate city growth. Then realized Darwin would provide Howtzers to blast the cities so aquired it early on, after base infrastructure was established ( which im pretty keen on before pushing too far ). What i should have gone for sooner was Apollo, to see clearly that vast east west map, that i had not expected.

The first military units i built were Stealth Fighters which were great for warding off the Barbarians and capturing their Leaders for early needed cash. A few defensive Tanks to run the rails or Alpine Troops to hop mountains to defend cities if the barbs got to close. I quickly built the Hoover Dam for increased production and to offset pollution and Adam Smith's to line my pockets. Spys on Transports were sent to tediously scout for cities and i found it odd that the other civs were generally just a capital and maybe 1 or 2 small satelite cities. I was expecting much more. However those none capitals, when bribed, made for good off continent unit production. If i had been wise enough and built Apollo early on i would have realized the futility of extended and time consuming exploration and directly bee-lined for other civs w/ howtzers and spys. Perhaps Charlie Woodchuck's Paratroopers and Stealth Bombers would have been faster but Spys let me know what is near, in and bribable. Magellan's Voyage helped a bit for quicker ocean passage as did placing chains of transports. That Bomber / Paratrooper technique might have been pretty effective. However if i remember right the cities were far, far apart. Engineers founding cities, transports and aircraft carriers would have been needed i presume to make for hopping along.

Pretty cool.

It was a fun, unique game and i appreciate the opportunity to play and share strategies with fellow posters.

Wow, I never thought about Darwin's to get techs. Also, should have gone for Apollo once I realized no one was anywhere nearby. Maybe next GOTM I will perform better. (Well, finish, for that matter, without causing a crash).

If you want to submit your game you must send me a PM so I can give my mail adress. Otherwise I won't be able to get the save files because they go to Duke of M. (the original GOTM organizer).

Quick conquest is nothing more then good planning and having a good strategy. In almost all cases it's wise to get a map (via Marco Polo, United Nations, Apollo Program or just diplomats or spies). Getting a map with help of a wonder will speed things up really fast.

After playing this GOTM I know what can be improved to speed things up even more. I made some mistakes with capturing the Mongol capitol which cost extra money. If I didn't made those mistakes I probably could have finished end 2058.....

But perhaps there are a few player who can do even better.
