I'm playing the GOTM V right now, and I could have ended it even 50 turns earlier, but still not only the normal score, but also the GOTM score itself keeps on rising.
eek.gif
Every turn I recalculate what my GOTM score would be and (ofcourse due to super growth) it just keeps on rising almost constantly with a almost half point every turn.

Anyway, concerning this GOTM, I started worthless. The Zulus kept bugging me and they were the ones who stopped my development most. But once I knocked them out, the rest followed easily. Now I got the whole world with a lot of big cities which are still growing, but I stopped my research, which means I don't even have industrialisation. Solely to be able to buy aqueducts, marketplaces, and sewer systems as fast as possible. The fact that I don't have farmland isn't that bad because I don't even have everything irrigated yet. So actually (I think) I don't really miss the technology.

Small reminder: it would be better not to reveal your exact score.

I got an archer and a chariot and took Zimbabwe about 3100 bc, so I never had any problem with the zulus, next I took Persopolis, then followed with triemme's taking carthage (which was aztec) and the 2 aztec cities with vet calvary, I took my vet calvary and took rome, cedar creek, and a couple of other cities. From there my vet calvary just marched fromm city to city bashing heads, leaving parsagrade for last.

Once I had parsagrade isolated I knew they would never be any threat since it was land looked with no good resources so I just built up the rest of the planet and I keep building and building, a few turns a day or so. I guess I will go for spaceship and see what kinda score I can end up with.

I can't say I am pleased with my performance in this game.

First of all, this is the first time I played on a small map. It's also the first time I played with 7 civs. Therefore, I feel really crowded and trapped on my continent that I share with the evil Zulus. I should have been aggressive and taken them out a long time ago.

But I chose to try being more peaceful than I usually am, and I am suffering for it. I am fighting a defensive war with just about everyone, and holding my ground rather well. I have switched to democracy, which is also not my style, in an attempt to boost my science and win by spaceship. Unless I get far ahead in science and money, then switch to fundamentalism, buy tons of units and do a blitzkrieg to take out the zulus.

Anyone else not doing so well? I guess I'm not quite as good as the hardcore civ2 players, but I am enjoying this game of the month idea and I will play in future games no matter how badly I score.

My game is going well.I might even go for a decent score....

Which makes me wonder:
What score will be needed for top spot?

Small map such as this I'm thinkin...80?..90?..100?..not really sure as I havn't really played for score in GoMs yet.....

any predictions?

Suppose someone can end the game in 500 AD and gets a score of 1500, then his GOTM score would be 80.

This is for comparison. I really can't predict or guess how people will preform this time.

I FINISHED!!!!
biggrin.gif

Yep that's right I finished a GOTM! In 2 days none the less. I first destroyed the Zulus and then built a road along the polar route to attack the Persians. The Romans, Souix and Persians extermination were all simulatanous. It was a 3 party war on 1 front with units coming from ships to the north and my polar road from the south. It was a great military victory!!!! Then from there I did a naval assault on the Aztecs and the Carthagians. I bought a few cities and then slowly took over the rest with my army of knights and crusaders!!!

MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
My second highest score!!!! 59 %!!!!!

Yeah

I'm finished too. And the easy thing is: I don't have to send it in.

But I really have to play further a long time while I could have ended much sooner. But the GOTM score kept rising.

I think this is my best GOTM so far (of the 3).

I am finished, too. It's my highest Gotm score, but I didn't enjoy playing ... as much as the other 2 Gotms

I'm finished i think my score was like 89% or something, i took care of the zulu's first, then i colonized the west tip of Persia, Romans and Soiux had been wiped out. I conquered all of Persia then set up a base city on the continent of carthage and moved troops from the German Continent to carthage and ravaged them very shortly with calvary and bombers and an excellent navy of AEGIS Cruisers and Destroyers, i conquered them then invaded Aztecs from sea using bombers and about 15 calvary. I'm the bomb

I have a feeling that my score is really going to suck compared to everyone elses. I was able to win easily enough with the 400 point spaceship. Even so I had one memorable campaign in the game where I took out the Aztec "Empire" with one diplomat by accident.

I had only sent the dip to explore (didn't know the Aztecs were there. The dip found some barbarian knights two of which he bribed. Soon after they upgraded to dragoons thanks to Leonardo. The dragoons ran down the Aztec phalanxes and warriors and took both Aztec cities.

This is my first GOTM. As I write this, my Spaceship is on the way, and I'm concentrating on making the cities grow. The SS will arrive before all my cities have maxed, however.

Early on, the Zulus and I had a few minor skirmishes, but my horseman flanked them and fortified on a mountain to help contain/distract their northward expansion. A lone warrior, later backed by diplomats, defended south of the Zulu civ.

After Monarchy in BC 1650, I went for Republic very early (for me)... revolution in 1000 BC and republic in 925 BC, and used WLTC days to zoom Berlin to size 7 by 825 bc, with Hamburg following. By 625 BC: 2 size 8 and one (irrigation-limited) size 3 cities.

AD 40 was a big year... both Pyramids (Berlin) and Colossus (Hamburg) were completed simultaneously.

By the Millennium, Hamburg (my science city) was size 18 (29 shields, 248 science), Berlin 12, Frankfurt & Leipzig 10, Konigsburg (and its 3 whales) 9, Munich 5, and Heidelburg 3. These were destined to form the core of the German empire. Arbela, a size 3 ex-persian city (bribed), is hopelessly mired at size 3, and a former Barbarian city (itself evidently a prior Roman city), Cumae, is Size 10. The Zulus were contained (but their existance blocked German northward expansion), and my embassy kept an eye on them. My seapower is a lone Trireme, bribed from a raiding barb... Its mission is to explore and roam the coastlines, looking for hapless victims to bribe (I like "none" units). Taxes are 0%, Science 70% (every 2 days), Luxuries at 30%.

1240 AD was a big year - Leonardos Workshop was done. All those cheap "none" units are now much more powerful, and most of my cites are now invulnerable. Explosives are one turn from completion, and my Ironclads are wreaking havok with all they see. Antium will be in German hands when my Ironclads arrive on station. Hamburg is still the big Gorilla at size 21 (29 Shields, 324 science), with a 17, two 16s, two 15s, 11, 10, and 5.
JS Bach followed in the year 1320.

1470 proved to be the beginning of the end, as it marked the discovery of Tactics. Normally, this discovery is insignificant in the development of my empire... but I have an army of NONE Cavalry now, and so far no gunpowder units to face them. Time to agitate my neighbors into war. Because the German empire is small and compact, and war is still desirable, the government is still Republic. By my count, the cost is 53 Trade Icons lost to corruption. However, my Destroyers would cripple my cities' growth under a Democracy... so it's Republic for now.

Finally in 1500 AD, a war with the Zulus... in 1505, my Cavalry takes their capital... in 1515, their empire is mine. Their Capital will be used to spew out engineers until it is destroyed (Stupid Zulus put Zimbabwe in a non-optimum location). In the far north, and steady war against the evil Carthegenians is progressing very well, Cavalry, Riflemen, and a vet Destroyer. Other destroyers are continuing to pummel any occupied coastal cities of the Sioux (whom I have not yet made contact with). The Senate will not let me attack the Romans or Persians, but I badger both empires continually in the hope they will start a war.

In 1520, needling the Persians finally resulted in War. A RR rushed from Antium to Persipolis using all my available engineers results the the eradication of all Persians by 1530. My Vet Cavalry reign supreme.

In 1525, I am researching Electronincs (need Hoover Dam!), and the Carthagenian Civilization fell by Subversion. My growth cycle (50% lux) ended as the need is now pressing for gold. 30% tax, 50% sci, 20% Lux gives me 560 gold per turn, with Sci giving advances every 2 years.

1530 was the year of big decision... and the decision is to kill everyone quickly. War has been impossible with the Romans... the senate refuses. My Destroyers are in place, and so will be my Cavalry, Spies, and riflemen.

In 1540, my engineers were laying RR track to Roman cities in preparation for a war which will come with a revolution.... when lo and behold, a Roman horseman attacks my engineers building a RR track on a hill near Rome. This welcome war results in the utter annhilation of the Roman Empire in the same year.

In 1545, my engineers lay RR towards Sioux cities, and declaring a revolution in 1550 allows me to start a war with the Sioux when I meet them for the first time. In 1555, all sioux cities are mine, except for Bear Paw, which I allow to live so I can build a spaceship.

I come out of revolution in Democracy, and use military units to help accelerate the development of my empire.

1560 begins the forced growth under Democracy, with 40% lux. 10% sci gives advances every 6 turns, and 50% tax yields 1128 gold. The objective now is to land a Spaceship before 1800.

Caravans are key to quick sciencs and gold to finance all the rush building and expansion. In 1610, a new record of 1110 gold is set for oil to Veii.

Spaceflight is discovered in 1690, and a new record of 1782 gold is set for oil from Hamburg to Texalcoco, both of which have airports and superhighways. If a city ain't got no Airport and Superhighway, it an't gettin' no freight!

In 1710, Stealth is completed, leaving only FT. In 1750, a rail link is completed via the southern polar route, which eliminates the need for the tedious Hamburg-Veii transports of Freight and engineers every year.

In 1756, The Apollo Program is completed and a full spaceship (39-8-8-4-4-4) is begun. Also, engineer population exceeds 200 for the first time.

In 1760, a Hamburg Oil Frieght to Tlateloco give a record 2184 gold. A later Hlobane-Bonn uranium freight gives 2176.

In 1770, the spaceship is completed, and launched in 1772... Growth will be encouraged throughout the empire, but it is now obvious that growth will not be finished by the time the spaceship lands.

So that's my German Empire at the moment. Conquered with Cavalry and Funded with Freight.

I just submitted my first GOTM -- good idea. Anyway, I could have finished way early (~1000AD, at least by my standards), but after seeing past GOTM scores, it seemed SS was the better way to go. So I whittled it down to one Persian city, and I filled the world with happy people, but I think I made some mistakes as usual, and took about 30-40 turns too many in doing so. Looking back, I should have just ended the game early, I think I might have had a better score -- maybe this is an effect of the relatively easy level and small map. I guess we'll see.

Anyway, I hope Civ3 fixes the tedium of the endgame when going for a higher score. It's just way too boring to micromanage hundreds of cities. I think I'll be in the camp of those of us who'll be shooting to finish fast in the future. And I'll be able to impress you all with my GOTM scores in the low-teens, if I'm lucky.
smile.gif
Ha ha.

I played this game without any real planning. My science was horrendous and I didn't build but one wonder. It was a new way of playing the game. Just whipping right through it. I think the whole thing took maybe 6 hours (tops).

I didn't bother to calculate my score, but I'm sure it sucked

This GotM has been a rather strange one for me - I was quite lucky in the beginning - the Zulu's thought that a warrior should try and kill my horseman - and so I got the Zulu capital very fast in the game and that ended that threat!!

I didn't really play this game all that much, I wasn't sure about how I wanted to play nor did I have any goals, like I usually have when I play GotM - SO I just tried to go the usual way and conquer all but one Civ very fast! This I managed to do by 200AD - but by then I was very tired of playing on a small map and didn't really want to play the long empire building games that I usually do. So I decided to try something new and begun the WLT_ growth just after that. Most of my cities where building caravans that I used to get money to rush buy the Aqueducts and later Sewer systems and also to help me build all the available wonders. I managed to build a few new cities while this was going on and take all but one of the Sioux cities. The I decided to research all the techs that game me wonders or that led to wonders so that I could get a bit extra that way - after this - which happened very quickly I took the last Sioux city and won the game by conquest!!!

I think that trying this out has made me learn a bit more about Civ and I think that I'll change my style a bit from now on - as I usually wait much longer with WLT_ I ended as a fun game and I'm pretty glad I finished it!!!

Hmm. Sounds much like my game, Shadowdale. Except I didn't control the board (except for one city) until 440AD, and I was a bit sloppy with my Love Days application I think.

Still it'll be my highest GOTM score yet.

Whew! Just finished the GOTM. It is amusing to read about how you all handled the game after finishing mine. I am brand new to the game, and learned a great deal the hard way. I had trouble with the Zulus early on, and managed to make peace and gain a few science advances from them, but I never completely conquered them. I was waging a successful war agaist them later, but accidentally left a city at the front undefended and it was gone....they immediately asked for a cease fire, and had the Great wall, so I was forced to make peace. They were so weak that no amount of harassment would induce them to war, so I turned my attention to the East where the Romans had eliminated the Persians. I really had trouble taking cities until I was able to use marines, armor and howitzers, so by the time I was effective it was already 1977! So I finished the game in 2020, having seen about half the map, having conquered the Romans, kicked the Sioux off the continent and established a rock-solid alliance with my buddies the Zulus. I learned a lot about effective war, and the importance of ALWAYS having a defender (when the Barbarians landed next to and sacked Hamburg... just 2 turns from completing Marco Polo's Embassy)...aaarrrGH!!

I really need to work on my start game. Getting wonders before the competition was always a challenge, even without the help of the barbs, and it sounds like I could be doing a lot better at the sciences earlier on. I really enjoy reading about everyone's games and strategies, and I look forward to seeing my score improve!
Thanks!

Well this if my first round in GOTM and I think it has been superb so far.
I took a different path for conquest than most people by fortfying the polar route, and focusing my efforts to wipe out the zulus. I had ships out to explore early on and launched and attack against the carthage empire.
They fell fast and soon moved on to the western coast of the Indian empire.
By this time my homeland was full of towns and growing fast in PDS mode. this was around 1 AD. By 1000 AD the Indian and Roman were falling apart as I attacked both at the same time, they will don't have much longer.
Now the year is 1520 AD and I will soon wipe out the aztec and leave them with one small town. I have the cure for cancer and just discovered flight I plan to win by SS and expect a score between 30-40.
Comparing to the old GOTM scoreboards this seems very well for a rookie, but I am not the only one who seems to be doing well.
I would like to see a harder level for GOTM 6.

Ahh, then you have much to learn, young Piranha... I hardly built any defensive units at all.

But what about barbarians? There's nothing more irritating than barbarians - or other civs too - landing on your land and taking over a city (or more), just because you didn't have defence.

And this GOTM has a lot of barbarians!

And this GOTM has a lot of barbarians!

Really? I didn't see them that much in my game early, and by the time they really came at me, I was strong enough to thwart them with just one defender in each city. Eventually, they stopped coming, probably because I settled just about every bit of land and they had no where to "start" except by sea. I guess I got lucky.
