So how did your Korea game end? And I do have a confession; the original Korean "island" was pretty isolated. I added Barb Island to give you a chance to obtain trade goods, if you desired. Hope it helped.

SPACESHIP ATTEMPT
In the Industrial age I spent a total of 3 extra turns on research except the obligatory 4 turns, IIRC. The 5 turn techs were Steam Power (before the GA,) Electricity (started just before the GA) and Atomic Theory (after the GA.) The reason I didn't research AT during the GA was that I wanted to bee-line for combustion, gift Persia and make them research Flight for me. Unfortunately they didn't get around to it, possibly because of their wars with Japan and India but also of course because of their urge to research old scrap techs and optinals before getting around to the progressive ones. A third reason might be that I decided to get Replaceable Parts before bee-lining for Combustion.

The only useful tech I traded from Persia in last two eras was Communism. (Nationalism came from Japan.) When we entered the Modern Age both Persia and us got Computers. The chance of trading techs in the Modern Age was limited by the fact that Persia declared war on us. They were the only surviving AI by then and so we couldn't deflect their attention onto someone else.

In the MA we did 4 turn research all the time. The old Chinese area with the FP was far more productive than the home island.

We slowed down the race towards the domination limit in the 900s AD, as Japan and India were chewed up by us and Persia. As The Internet came in 1120 AD we had to give 4 towns to Persia.

An interesting thing I noticed was that Japan did not start with Nationalism when they entered the Industrial Age. Instead they went Steam Power-Industrialization. This is the first time I have observed this in an AI.

My milking was dedicated when it came to happiness: hurrying marketplaces, disbanding obsolete troops for shields (mainly cavalries) and irrigating. It was half hearted when it came to founding new towns: I founded 4-5 towns that would not expand beyond our territory. I stayed 8-21 tiles from the domination limit. The score was OK but not 10K.

Barb Island
This was an interesting touch. You had to be swift in claiming the island before the first uprising. I wasn't. But when infantries came along I finally claimed it, getting quite a few elites in the bargain. This had little importance since I traded ivory from Japan up until the day when I declared war on them and after that I took their ivory. But it was comfortable to park boats in the little lake in the middle of the island, where boats could not be attacked except with bombardment. This meant that the ship chaining was 100% secure.

There were 69 barb horsemen on the island when I landed on it, and the odd barb warrior.

Timeline

460 - Traded Magnetism(3) from Persia. Enter Industrial age. We get Medicine, they get Nationalism.
At one point near the end of the era we had some boats with cavalries ready to land on the ivory island, but the barbs wouldn't leave one the tiles free to land on before the troops had to move on to the continent.
470 - Newton's.
520 - Steam Power.
590 - Leader ###3 gives us Universal Suffrage and a long awaited GA.
600 - America declares war with some very obsolete units. We are forced to spend some money on hurrying cavalries, but the Americans are likely to provide nice war happiness.

610 - Zululand eliminated.
580 - Industrialization.
630 - Electricity.
640 - Captured New York - Leo's WS.
670 - Corporation.
730 - Noticed something interesting. When Japan reached the Industrial age they did NOT choose Nationalism but Steam Power as their first tech. Japan is known for its otherness but I wonder if this has been observed before. It may work to my advantage since I am planning to capture the towns closest to Beijing.
750 - Refining.
770 - Mongols eliminated.
780 - America eliminated.
790 - Landed 11 infantries and a settler on Ivory Island! They are to face 69 barb horsemen.
800 - Two more elites. It's an odd feeling hoping that the vet infantries will lose a hit point.
IT: Only 12 barb horsemen attacked. Two elites. 48 barbs left.
810 - 23 barbs left.
830 - We have 20 cavs and 13 infantries for defense. Japan acquires Nationalism (traded by us) on the same day as our attack. This is no big deal since we are mainly after the towns closest to Beijing. We gain 5 towns and lose 7 cavalries, meeting no riflemen.
We sign MPP with Persia, or Japan might do it. First attack renders Leader ###3.
870 - Combustion. We gift Persia up so they can research flight for us.
880 - Captured Kyoto and Tokyo.
910 - IT - India declared pathetic war.
920 - Atomic Theory. Japan eliminated.
960 - Electronics.
970 - India eliminated. Enter Milking Age.
1000 - Mass Prod.
1080 - Radio.
1120 - Modern Age. Give Persia about 8 techs - we haven't been able to trade any. A mistake was probably not to bee-line for Combustion, so that at least Persia could have researched Flight for us. But without Replaceable Parts and the fast workers development would have been slower, on the other hand. Unluckily, Persia and us both get Computers as free techs. From ToE we get Miniaturization and Fission.
1160 - Rocketry.
1190 - Gave 4 towns to Persia to avoid domination. We were 21 tiles from the limit before gifting, and 21 turns from the limit after the expansion, in 1200 AD.
1200 - Space Flight.
1255 - 2400 beakers per turn is virtually achieved. Excess cash can be used for marketplaces.
1305 - Persia declares war. It will be mainly a defensive war.
1325 - Game crash. Razed some town.
1350 - Razed Arbela (Hoover Dam.)
1355 - Peace with Persia. No more war happiness anyway.
1370 - Spaceship launched. c 7000 firaxis points. I got a bit more than the usual 8000 jason points.

Well, I finished just before the deadline.

20K in 1938, hitting exactly 20,000 cp.

I saw something I'd never seen before in this game. The Zulu refused to accept my towns that tried to culture flip to them, many times. I was a little amused since they declared war on me shortly thereafter and spent some effort on taking these same towns.

sounds great, Megalou!

i did not find the time to finish after i had already conquered China and Mongolia and everything was going fine.

i am moving to a new flat currently, and changed computers as well. i reinstalled civ3 already but could not get ca2 running again yet. i only moved the worker in the new france game and now only realize how much i got addicted to this utility tool! ainwood and his friend (i think his name was thomas) really did an awesome job there, to such an extent that the game became unthinkable to me without it. let me say THANK YOU for your effort you put into this again.

back to my game, as i said, unfortunately no templar game this time. and maybe no submissions in the nearer future either. we´ll see if i can fit one in.

but: i´ll be back [austrian saying :-) ]

I trigger a domination win in 1878 AD. I am dusting my trophy case for another shield. But it was my first Emperor win, so I am happy. I never managed to trigger my GA. I spent most of the time struggling against Persia. 3376 Firaxis, 4086 Jason.

They really love those island starts, don't they? I was cursing the world at first, but I feel like a better player for having survived. Around 500 AD I thought I would be submitting a defeat.

You'd better stick around, T_x. Or will it take a Jurassic Park to get you back? Thanks for the praise although I would have liked to reach 10K. It's my new goal - 10K without conquest or domnination. As leader of the GPR this should suit you just fine.... PS. Could you please find some other Austrian to quote? Or should I do a Dolph Lundgren? "Uhhh! Uhhh! I-will-break-you." There we go.

@Raliuven, Aren't those virtual trophies nice, though? They look just as shiny as they did yesteryear.

I second that - without T_x there will be no one around to correct all my errors! Then I will really be lost! When I came on the forums, he was the first person to really challenge me - and continues to do so. I feel I am a far better player for it - not the least of which is that I now understand how to run a truly efficient settler factory.

Well, I just got my first trophies and at first I thought I was being mocked with a cow. It appears as if that is actually a good thing, though I am not sure I deserved it in GOTM104. The shield I can completely believe!

@ Raliuven - you rely on me correcting your errors??? your´re doomed, my friend, you´re doomed. ;-)

sounds interesting. i´d love to join you in that enterprise, but 10k without condom surely is a lot of work, and my playing time is very restricted (say, nearly not existing) at the moment.

surely i could quote another austrian, but no one would know him :-)

here´s my hattrick... with only a few details of my shadow game that just ended in the dark...

as i said, i had really bad luck against the barb galleys and only saw foreign borders in 800bc.
in 330 i connect the gems, starting my war against china. in 30bc i take Beijing with the HG and rush the FP in it with a leader i saved from 310bc (with 2nd e win). leaving china with only one town, i start war against the mongols. then in 70ad my FP town FLIPS, go figure! relatively big mongolia falters quickly. in 150ad chivalry is in and in 190 i rush the FP again, this time in karakorum. i had gained another MGL in 130ad with my 7th e victory.

no time to finish. in 190, i controlled the southern half of the pangaea except the quite strong Persia. my next wars were to be against them and the Zulus. next time, Shaka!

Is that so?
