This final spoiler will cover the period from the Middle Ages to the end of the game! Typically for Japan the period of the Samurai is an important era, but perhaps not so much in this Pangaea game (based on some of the comments in the first spoiler!) So, any and all discussion about your Japan game is welcome!

Samurai worked fine for a UU. I didn't plan on much war, but my efforts to keep costs low so I could hurry the tech pace meant a smaller army. This in turn inspired Persia and Babylon to declare on me several times. With the Samurai, however, defense against invading Civs was not an issue.

I didn't kick off my GA until 610AD when I attacked the Greek. Samurai waves conquered greece in 820AD. Could have been faster, but it worked for my purposes.

I only picked up 2 GL though the game. One I tried to use to rush my palace in the old Greek core, but this failed. I rushed the palace and then I took another city. I was leader fishing on the last of the Greek army with my elite samurai. Big mistake. I took more cities and suddenly I needed 100 more shields in the box for my palace. Those cities were the difference between a 900 shield palace and a 1000 shield palace. I've never seen that before. I could have disbanded a few cities to bring the total down again (I think?). I didn't bother. By the end of my game, the 'rushed' palace still hadn't built. I do wonder how it might have affected by end game and if I should have disbanded.

Went to democracy in 840AD. I was almost constantly at war with Babs after they declare in 1190AD. I make peace only at the very end to earn their vote in the UN. In 1315 Persia declares on me and I am at war with them until the end of the game. I did all of the research through the IA. Even gifting techs left and right, the AI did nothing useful. They were pretty useless for most of the MA too. I banked a GL from 1300AD and rush the UN in 1510AD. I kept Egypt alive by gifting them cities I took from the Babylonians.

In the end, Persia votes for Persia. Egypt and Babylon vote for me. Rome abstains. I win, 3 vs 1.

Spoiler :

30AD – trade babs Theo for Engineering. Everyone is making peace with Persia. Traitors. I am rated the happiness nation by Thucydides. I was given a nice plaque. I will hang it next to Xerxes’ head.
250AD – gain education, I’m the only one with it. Still down feudalism. Make peace with Xerxes. For now.
270AD – trade babs education for feudalism, 80gp & WM.
290AD – Persia declares on Egypt.
300AD – buy Egyptian worker for 107gp.
310AD – riot in Satsuma – not sure how I missed that.
320AD – buy temple (76gp) at Matsuyama to put culture pressure on newly founded bab city Uruk. Nagasaki is already exerting culture pressure.
340AD – I picked up Musical Theory so I can grab bach’s, since I’m in it for the long haul and I’m religious, I’m going to pick up Democracy for faster workers. Start PP – due in 6 turns. I’ve got 552gp in the bank.
370AD – culture from Mats pushes back boundary on Uruk. Barbs also appear at Uruk. Uruk is guarding with a spear? Erroneous mouse click sends a horseman across the boarder to invade Greece.
380AD - Egypt has invention but won’t trade, even for Musical Theory.
390AD – Persia has Invention now and will trade to catch up in Education + 50gp. It’s a deal and I keep monopoly on MusThe to boot. Babs willing to pay for MusThe but not enough to break monopoly. I want a lock on bach’s before I sell. Bach’s in Kyoto in 17t. PP in 1t. Push luxury to 20% to put everyone to work in size 12 cities. Cut bach’s to 16t.
400AD – Learn PP, banking in 8t. Egypt wiling to pay WM, 38gp & 11gpt for PP. Okay with me – that’s the best deal. Rome and Greece are hopeless behind. Persia and Bab don’t offer as much. Persia offers the next best deal at WM, 27gp, 7gpt. Babs offer WM, 28gp, 2gpt. Total gain is 493gp and 3 WM for PP. I still have MusThe for myself. I’ve got all the money in the world – 599gp.
420AD – change Mats to Courthouse build. Nagasaki also to build Courthouse.
430AD – Persia is winning the war against Egypt.
450AD – Pick up furs, knock lux back to 10%. Banking in 3t @ +35gpt. Bach’s in 10t.
460AD – I pick up banking. No one else is doing Chiv so I start it, do in 5t so I can start my golden age. Greece’s days are numbered. Persia has Egypt on the ropes.
490AD – Persia is willing to pay dearly for banking but I won’t sell. It’s been a while since the AI has come up with a new tech.
500AD – Rome has a worker. Buy it for WM, 15gp, PP.
530AD – pull in Chiv, set Democracy in 8t. Greece just built the GLH in a small city on my border. Thanks! I’ll come get it in a minute. Start upgrading horses to samurai. I finally ding Persia WM, 22gpt, 77gp for banking. Babs take banking for 110gp + WM. That’s 2 new samurai. Give banking to Egypt for 10gp. They are on their last leg anyway. Have 6 samurai by end of turn.
550AD – Bachs builds. Lux to 0%. Dem in 5t, +12gt. Treasure emptied to make 11 Samurai. Almost ready to take out Greece.
570AD – Hurry temple in Sapparo for 60gp. Back off tech on Dem to 4t, +89gpt to convert horse to samurai.
610AD – Declare on Greece. Gold Age begins.
620AD – Delphi falls, capture 2 settlers stacked in city. Pharsalos falls. Get GLH in the mix. Best offensive unit that Greece can offer is the archer or horseman. Archer does kill one posted warrior in the hills. Saves me money in the long run.
630AD – position Samurai for attack on Athens.
650AD – switch Leo prebuild to Copernicus. Set to gunpowder in 4t.
660AD – Egypt and Persia sign peace. Then Rome declares on Persia. What?
670AD – Athens falls at the cost of 2 samurai dead, 2 wounded. Greece is done for. Drop of a horseman by boat at my undefended capital, but nearby samurai kills him with ease and promotes to boot. Nice try.
Babs and Rome are willing to pay an arm and a leg for Chiv. Surprised no one researched it. Decide to sell. Babs have the best deal at WM, 29gpt, 63gp. Rome will offer 18gpt, 20gp. Egypt will give 10gp, WM & worker. Persia only offers 20gp +WM. Don’t sell. Hope no one else will and Rome can school Persia for a while.
680AD – Mycenae falls, capture 2 workers and a settler. Lose 1 samurai, 1 wounded.
690AD – pull in Gunpowder, Chem in 4t. Stage Samurai for next attacks. Greece has 5 cities left.
700AD – Hoplites on hills are proving to e difficult for Samurai. Attack stalls. Need more Samurai to push home the final blow.
710AD – Sparta falls, first leader born. Will use to move palace into Greek lands. Rome is losing cities to Persia.
730AD – pick up Chem, go for physics.
740AD – Greece is so underdeveloped I can’t believe it. Barbs must have just killed them. I thought I had it bad.
750AD – stage for assault. 10 Samurai to take greek stronghold of Knossos. Elite Hop on hill has killed 2 samurai and wounded 6 others. Time for payback.
770AD - Knossos falls at the cost of 1 samurai and 2 wounded. Much better. Kill hop is toast. Greek have 3 cities left. Moving settler for new capital towards selected location. People unhappy with war. Lux to 10%.
780AD – Greece asks for peace. Nope. Thermoplyae falls. Greek have 2 cities left. Cap builds in Osaka, let Leo for prebuild for newton’s .
810AD – build Ise in former greek territory. Use leader to rush palace. Will use greek cities as new core. Capture another settler for 2 slaves. Argos falls. Greek have 1 city left.
820AD – Hmmm. Seem to have hit a glitch. Rushed palace but now it still says I have to wait 99 turns. It didn’t fill the entire production box. What happened? Greek are destroyed.
830AD – revolt.
840AD – we are a democracy. Persia offers Dyes, WM, 19gpt, 8 gp for Democracy. Make trade. Also trade Demo + 50gp for ivory to babs. I want fast research pace to push through industrial age and get to UN.
890AD – Trade chemistry – babs give Ivory, WM, 6gp, 17gp. Rome gives WM, 25gpt, 60gp. Persia gives 1gpt, 20gp. Egypt gives WM+17gp.
900AD – Receive award for Most Advanced Nation of the World. Alex probably wouldn’t agree. Move to IA. Set to steam at max, 5t @ -84gpt. I have 2415gp in the bank and nothing to spend it on.
960AD – Steam discovered but no coal. Will Steal Coal from babs with a new city and culture push.
970AD – Oops. Found coal in former greek lands. Will still try to steal from babs, but now not so urgent.
1020AD – Coal hooked up. RRing.
1030AD – Trade Physics. Babs – Free Artistry, WM, 38gpt, 40gp. Persians – Dyes, WM, 5gpt. Egypt – WM, 40gp. Rome – WM, 40gp.
1090AD – Persia – trade metallurgy for Nav & Econ. I have a prebuild for Smiths. Give Babs Metal & Econ for Ivory & WM. Rome gives WM, 18gpt, 50gp for Metal. Rome gives 14gpt & 5gp & WM for Econ.
1100AD – Egyptian city of Asyut flips to me. Welcome to Japan! RR backbone is in place. Building will accelerate now that workers are together.
1180AD – Gain Replaceable Parts. Looks like Babs might be staging a war against me. What? Babs and Persians in IA now.
1190AD Yep. Babs declare on me. Punks. That will be their last mistake. I lose Ivory but gain WW. Evens out. Take Uruk with ease. Stage against Eridu with 6 samurai. Buy Roman in against Babs for ToG.
1200AD – Eridu falls to the sword. Kill invading stack of archers outside Roman city. No casualties as of yet. Several elite samurai promotions.
1240AD – trade industrialization for dyes & MT. Sell MT to Rome for WM, 3gpt, 20gp.
1250AD- Sidon falls. No casualties yet.
1260AD – ToE in 4 turns. Stop research to bank money. Plan to 4 turn it to UN.
1280AD – Gift everyone into IA and into near tech equality. Hoping the AI will come up with one or two techs to trade. Go for Radio and hope someone does steel or refining.
1295AD – Smith’s.
1300AD – 2nd leader born. I will hold him the rest of the game waiting for the UN. Insta-build! I will max research to the end. Have 4261gp in the bank to carry through to the end. Spend it all!
1315AD Persia picked up nationalism. Slug. I’m locked into about another 30 rounds at this rate!
1320AD – seems clear that Persia is now going to try to declare on me. Idiots.
1325AD – Yep, Persia is invading. Knights and immortals vs. infantry fortified in hills & mountains. That’s smart. Persia will also be my UN rival, so I’m all for beating on him. Tell Persia to leave, they say they will, but it doesn’t force them to declare or leave.
1330AD – Persia pushes deeper in. Computer says our armies are the same size. Whatever. Tell them to leave. Persia declares, of course. Didn’t see that coming. Order up some kickass and go to work.
1405AD – Been fighting a defensive war. Slaughtered many Persians. Took Akkad from Babs, give it to the Egyptians. Take Ellipi from the babs. Babs down to 4 cities. Rome is still my partner in war. Giving many luxuries/resources to Rome and Egypt for nothing to build good will.
1410AD – Gift Ellipi to Egypt.
1440AD – fend off last invading Persians. I think they are finally out of steam. Flight in 5t last IA tech.
1465AD – entered MA – set Fission to 9t – best I can afford.
1515D – Diplo Victory – 3 vs 1, 1 abstain. Persia votes for Persia, Japan, Egypt & Babylon vote for Japan. Rome abstains.

Domination victory in 410AD.
Good job, you beat me by a turn or two. I wish I had done what T_x and Memento did, go for an ancient age win. The game turned pretty dull in the Middle Ages, samurais predictably severing everything that came in their way but leaving all the decisive events behind in the Ancient Age. And the free tech lottery is not much fun either, at least not when three scientific civs can only give you one of those freebies.

Thanks for the message. I didn't keep good records, and those I did keep Mrs Scratcher "tidied up". :)

I gifted the scientific civs into the MA hoping to trade Republic for the free techs but no one would trade and I only left myself behind in techs. I took Greece on with my horseman and surpringly Greece folded quite easily. I got Fuedalism for the peace and then, once re-organised, declared again leaving Greece without a city but a settler on a boat. One MGL generated and a forbidden palace rushed in Athens.

I researched chivalry around 10ad, turned off reasearch and upgraded horsemen and built samurai to the end. Egypt was dispatched first with MA signed with Persia, Babs and Rome. As each Civ dropped out of the MA war was declared. Babs and eventually Greece were dispatched with Rome reduced to one city when domination triggered. A second MGL was generated and an army built but it was so late in the game the army never fought a battle.

Well, I complained about only earning one tech from the 3 scientific civs but it had one advantage: Once two of the civs had gotten Monotheism, it was not as valuable anymore. And so I could trade it for Republic
