GOTM145 China Regent Domination

In game number 145 of the classic game of the month series you will rule as Mao Zedong over the Chinese, who are militaristic and wonderfully industrious and start the game with the knowledge of Masonry and Warrior Code.

This is a Regent-level game, and this month we sponsor the domination victory condition. This means that you must reach 2/3 domination in terms of absolute territory as well as relative population. The Chinese unique unit is the Rider, a faster version of the Knight. You might need it, because the map is a large pangaea.

This game continues to use a modified form of the standard PTW scenario, and although no bugs have been reported in some time, it is possible that play testing has not been exhaustive. Any in-game event or behaviour that a player feels is unintended should be reported to the GOTM staff immediately.

Here is your start position, which is located rather centrally on the map:

Game files are uploaded and the release page will be available on October 21.

Please check & fix info on the release page. It seems totally messed.

Apologies. I created the new release page, by editing the previous one, but failed to save it back to the server. I have done so now!

I migrated to Windows 10, and have been unsuccessful as yet in obtaining a working V1.27F version of CIV III PTW. Hope I'll get one soon!

Having not played PtW in a long time, I have a few questions:

(2) Does the Phil-Repub still work? Is it better to go for Monarchy in a domination game? My plan is to really get out of my comfort zone here and abandon as much as I can of my build everything tendencies and by everything I mean barracks, marketplaces, and libraries. With WC its a 4 tech research to republic and a 5 tech research to Repub.

I'm thinking a core of cities with a ring placement of 3, followed by a second ring at about 6. All this is of course affected by terrain and water issues. Fast conquest using horse-riders, maybe a quick intro war using archers to leader fish.

(2) In PtW with leaders able to rush wonders, which are critical to domination?

(3) when does research get turned off and focus go to pop growth? I'm assuming it when you hit the land area limit.

(4) anything else I need to know?

Republic must be researched by hand since we don't have the philosophy slingshot. As for the government, I think it's better to stick to Republic since a lot of cash will be needed to upgrade horses to riders and Republic can supply that quicker than monarchy. For early wars, I'm unsure as to what is the best to do, but I'd play the first 2 (maybe 3, depending on the tech pace) wars using archers and horses to get leaders for the Pyramids (also for colossus or forbidden Palace if I'm lucky with leaders) and then later, a leader for Sun Tzu.

Does the Phil-Repub still work?

No, Philosophy doesn't give a free Tech in PtW.

I'm thinking a core of cities with a ring placement of 3, followed by a second ring at about 6. All this is of course affected by terrain and water issues.

The ring placement should be strict, at least in the first ring. Only then can you fully take advantage of the corruption model of PtW. All cities on the same distance enjoy exactly the same low corruption as if there had been only one city at this distance. For the second ring, of course the number of cities in the inner ring will affect corruption. There you might let terrain and other considerations matter, or keep to RCP, depending on your play style and general strategy.

You could also consider making plans for creating a second core around the Forbidden Palace. Either the Palace or the Forbidden Palace can be created in a new location, leaving the other in the old. The rules say that the new Palace/FP must be surrounded by the optimal city count of cities at the time of the removal. It is not allowed to place the Palace alone in a far-off location, thus reducing corruption on a large portion of the map.

In PtW with leaders able to rush wonders, which are critical to domination?

Yes and no. Leaders can rush Great Wonders, but there's no Temple of Artemis. You'll need to ICS or to rush cultural buildings.

when does research get turned off and focus go to pop growth?

When you know enough to finish. It depends on what units and buildings you'd like to be able to use.
