Gotm16 Results and Congratulations

Sorry about the calculator, I have GOTM15's max score (15485)being used for the calculations instead of 20441. I will get that changed. You can multiply the score by 15485/20441 in the meantime to get the proper score.

First of all, I want to thank Cracker :goodjob: for an outstanding job on GOTM XVI, but also in all aspects related to the GOTM, which has risen to new levels and made it possible for newbies, vets and everyone inbetween to engage in these fantastic monthly challenges and forum discussions. Without you, GOTM would not resemble anything close to what it currently represents.
Oh my gosh! I am shocked at the results. I knew my effort was much improved but "fastest win by domination" comes with absolute amazement, especially since I have only won by domination once in all other games. What is amazing about the close finish with Kukish is that I honestly was just trying to finish the game the last 10 turns, ofter pressing the spacebar because the turns were taking so long conquering the "New World". I knew dominiation victory was coming in a matter of turns via cultural expansion so I didn't try to attack anymore cities which may or may not have sped up the process.
Thank you Cracker for the praise but I want to congratulate Moonsinger, Bremp and SirPleb on those excellent games . It amazes me how any of you players can play a game out until 2050 and still pay close attention to all the aspects that require such a high score. I, myself, always try to get the game over as soon as possible, because, quite honestly I will definately make a mistake the more I hang aroung and I probably wouldn't finish the game by the end of the month due to my over-analysis of the game in the early stages.
Congrats Ribannah on the fantastic space finish by 1200ad. I cannot conprehend how that could be done so quickly considering the Emperor level and lack of contact with all but 2 civ's until quite a ways into the game, let alone the wherewithall too commit to a scientific victory without this knowledge. Great job everyone!!!
Now, if only I could learn HTML so I could post neater looking messages in these threads

Aeson,

Why don't we have the GOTM 17 calculator now and second, are the benchmark dates for victory types going to be the same over all types of games? This doesn't seem right.

Additionally, we should have the calculator before the game starts in my opinion. Why not, if the modification factors are going to be the same, some of the math heads will simply do their own version and that puts the non math heads at an unfair position, unless your modification factors include actually game scores.

I have read the information available on the calculator. Please explain this more fully. I have little interest in spending another 100 hours playing another GOTM until I can have some reasonable understanding of the scoring.

Thanks in advance.

The calculator will be out shortly. The problem with releasing it with the game is that it factors in the map to get the dates from (hope that answers the second part of your question). Someone who understands the modifiers would be able to know if there was a galley crossing or if they needed to wait for navigation to contact the last civs based off the dates, and it would be a spoiler for them. Because of this spoiler type info, we are probably going to release the calculator in conjunction with the 'full map' or 'end game' spoiler threads.

If you have any specific questions as to how the formula works, feel free to start up a thread. I'm afraid 'explain it better' doesn't help me know how to respond. The explaination on the web site is rather indepth, and taken with the modifiers posted contain everything you need to know about the formula. I can answer specific questions, but I can't explain the formula as a whole any better than is already posted. (read: the explaination will be the same as the posted one in such a case, so I'm not going to waste time duplicating it)

Very simply though: Play the GOTM the way you feel will lead to the most enjoyment from the game. The skill level shown in obtaining victory will be as equally rewarded as possible regardless of what victory type you choose to pursue. Milking, fastest finish, or a combination thereof are all viable ways of playing and obtaining top scores.

Rather than start another thread Aeson, I will just ask one simple question. The benchmark date for space race and diplomatic wins were the same for GOTM 15 and 16, while the other benchmark dates changed. Coincidence or are these dates fixed?

Please take no offense as I am not trying to be critical in any way. I think every aspect of the GOTM is swell.

Also, perhaps I am missing some important discussion of the formula. It is very hard to find all the relevant facts about the GOTM without a comprehensive index of links.

Thanks

I'm not sure where to post this, but congratulations to Moonsinger for her 20,000 points plus victory in GOTM 16!

Thanks Aeson. You guys are doing a great job with GOTM. I can't tell you how much I admire all the folks involved for your efforts.

Hurray to me !!! I came in 114th !!!
Hey I just got C3 for christmas (played C2 for a long time), and I knew that I had a lot to learn. But it was fun, and I learned a lot from reading all the posts.

Thanks to everyone who takes the time to post their timelines. I had to laugh at how pathetic my game was compared to the top scores, but we are all just here for the fun.

Started at 114, next month I hope to make the top 100, and up from there.

Congratulations to the real winners and the folks who put this together.

I'm beginning to further dislike the Jason score...I dropped 500 points in the Jason compared to the regular score. In the other game it was only 200 points. It might be more fair, but argh...with a conquest loss this time instead of diplomatic loss (in gotm15), it's harder to compare. And the conquest loss happened about a century after the diplomatic one in gotm15.

I near the end again...though I wasn't too surprised. I had gotten a better score than before, but I knew that a lot of people would get much higher.

The profiles are interesting...where is the index page to all of them? I'd like to read it - I know little about all the best players of the gotm.

Hey Creepster,

First off, I echo everyone else's sentiments about the excellent work you've done for all here. As a first timer, paying 2 levels higher than my usual Regent, I had a great (but oh so difficult) time!

To the winner's, I am in awe. I knew I was a babe in the wood's - but it is simply scary how far behind I am/ ahead most of you are. In 1700's, you're winning ? WOW. Ribannah - INCREDIBLE (to me at least) I thought I was trying to do as well as possible for space race , and you did it in 1200 AD?! I'm not worthy!!

Creepster - my final game that I submitted - not the first failed attempt (where I listed my points as 2991) was a score of 3212. Could you check, and if that's correct, please update the ladder ? It would be cool to be in the top 100, which I think I just about should do then (98, ahead of RetainSoftware, who has a space Race win !).

Thanx

I was pleasantly surprised by my relatively good result, considering a fairly indifferent start and middle game. This was my first attempt at milking a game and probably my last. I think that the new scoring system is a definite improvement and would appropriately reduce the value of milking attempts such as mine when the early game doesn't merit a very high score. Ribannah's space ship in 1200ad is a particularly amazing result.

I presume the new scoring system is called Jason as it is the child of Aeson.

Congratulations to everyone who has made an effort in this game, be it designing it or playing it. :)

I was quite surprised to see myself this high up in my first GOTM ever. And 3'rd best Diplomatic victory as far as i could see. And in the Jason score i did even better. Tough i doubt i will be submitting GOTM17, if i do it will only be the QSC if time permits.

Good luck in the next game everyone :D

I want to echo congratulations to all the top games, some incredible scores and also Ribannah's game for that early launch, that is flying through the tech tree. I think it tends to valdiate teh Jason scoring model, that it is so close in score to Moonsingers, i.e. both long and short games will be valid, and comparable, and excellence in either will be reflected in the scores.

Thank you everyone who congratulated me.:) It did help when the world top dairy farmers (Bamspeedy, CB, Aeson, Eman, ...) were on vacation. Also a big thank to Bremp and SirPleb for taking it easy this time. And Ribannah for the early space launch; around 1200 AD, Ribannah did have a huge lead of over 1000 points ahead of me. If it wasn't for the fast space launch, she would have easily made the 21K.:worshp:

Concerning the Impi puzzle : I used a couple of galleys to cruise along the shore, looking at all the Impi names from a safe distance (except for the occasional squid, but it helped that my galleys were veterans). When I laned troops I tried to always land them on mountain tops, and near to barbarian villages. Taking those villages out was top priority for me in order to prevent new barbs being spawned.

But I still don't really understand the dangerous trade-route concept : why was the trade passage through the rif so dangerous ? Would it be cut off if a barbarian moved to one of the mountains that formed the bottleneck ?

I'm {upset}, I tried so hard i got {only} 1/2 of {what the high scorers got}. Anyways, I have not been playing civ for the past 3 weeks or so... duno why

P.S. Look at it someone!

- I had marketplace in all cities
- Luxury Spending was at 100% for most of the period 1560-2050

Great Work by the GOTM staff, in setting up GOTM16 and in displaying the results! And congratulations to the players who submitted those awesome top scores and early finishes (Moonsinger and Ribannah)! I thought I was doing pretty good in my space race, but Ribannah beat me by almost 400 years!!

A side comment: I'm listed as only having 1 GOTM submitted and 0 QSCs. I believe the number should be 6/3. Perhaps this is because my name is listed as civ-stev, not civ_steve?
