Gotm22 Results and Congratulations

I am happy that I got as high as I did. I got off to a very slow start waiting for Berserks. Most of my other games had at least one or two wars before I started my first this game.

One thing I am curious to know is if all those 100K losses to England.

QwertySoft, your analysis of how you could play better is also an excellent primer for the many players who are on the cusp of winning consistently. Good luck sticking to it in GOTM23!

[PTW] 1.21f - Open Class

QwertySoft - been there, still doing that.

I used to play the '20 tile - no overlap' game myself and it wasn't until GOTM#22, and after having read numerous posts in the War Academy that I realised what was needed.

I never used RCP in any of my games - I didn't even know that it existed as a gameplan until joining CivFanatics. I used to think that it was poor city management when other CIVs did it.

But despite it looking 'ugly,' it has got to be done. I understand, now, why people do it - for corruption reduction in the 'shade' of the capital (or Forbidden Palace) - and I'm now one of them, but I don't like it. I do it but I don't do it out of choice. You have to do it to keep up with other scores that will be posted, and to try and get one up on the other CIVs in your game.

As for #138th position - I'd trade you for mine. 154th.

I too lacked conviction for a large battle against the Celts, English or Chinese. And when the Celts had wound me up too much, and I felt able to respond, I sent 8 galleys (no upgrade to transports) with 16 cavalry units - only to see most of them blitzed before reaching land.

As for the Histograph score, I can't say anything much about GOTM#23 (as I've already landed myself in hot water with Cracker - of which I was embarrassed about) but suffice it to say, that I went for that type of win when events panned out a certain way. You'll have to look for a post from me on that thread.

I think your analysis of your own failings is very commendable. I hope you crack it in time for the next few GOTMs.

Best wishes

Congrats on the game Lee! Noticed the move up in the ranks. Maybe some day I will get around to playing GOTM again.

On that note I have to say I am getting a bit dissappointed that QSC 21 and 22 haven't been released yet. Some of us only have time to play the QSC and for the month of September I didn't even complete that but I would like to see the QSC continue but I fear that without some kind of reassurance that it will be continuing in the future I may not continue to play that either :(. The discussion assoiciated with QSC was what drew me into the Gotm and to watch it slowly fall by the wayside make the entire GOTM experience less enjoyable for me overall.

I am sure I am not alone in saying that sometimes time to play an entire game may not be possible, particularly when playing 3 or 4 Sg's like I and a few others often do. QSC still gives us an opportunity to play, discuss and contribute. Now that Greece has been over for 2 months and Vikes for 1 I can't even really remember what my QSC period was like for either.

I understand time and RL constraints very well and don't expect miracles but if QSC is no longer going to be supported I fear that I may lose interest completely and others may be in the same boat.

Congrats to all ... especially the top runners. I am still in awe of how consistently good you are.

Personally I am chuffed with my result! Highest result ever for me (37th) and I get a little ICON! (Cow - "Highest Base Score")

The game itself I found an immense challenge. Never played a 20K victory before, knew the concepts and ideas from the discussions threads... but got off to what I though was a TERRIBLE start missing pretty much all ancient age wonders. But then through a series of domination like wars I just kept russing pretty much every possible wonder from then on.

Thanks to Sir Plebs calculator I at first thought I was going to JUST scrap under the 2050 date... but wonder after wonder through the middle ages the date finally came in at 1965. NOT a wonderful 20K date... but I am chuffed none the less.

Good work Cracker and staff (as usual)... your hard work is greatly appreciated by us all.

I feel quite the same. I do have time available for full GOTM for the moment ... but who knows. Plus I truely thinks that first move can really make the difference when you have limited units / city and you need to do careful planning.
Experience from others using QSC can make you understand move per move what is better / less effective.
Later in the game , with units / territory being very different it is much more complicated to evaluate the differences.

Be curious no more on my part!! I lost my 100K to America.

It was a great game. I’d like to congratulate the winners, the GOTM team but also people that managed to hang in there and get that 20K victory.

Special congratulations to gerdy, civ_steve, and Bebek, playing predator class and hanging on till they got the elusive 20K victory. I tried to do that but just couldn’t.

Lowest rank ever for me (it’s 141 if you’re not into scrolling all the way down) but at least I had a good time.

Yndy's score was a surprise to be sure, particularly as I found this to my easiest GOTM win to date (and a surprising jump in score performance--took 52nd spot, which is about 80-100 places higher than I seem to find myself normally). I'm either starting to play better or the all-war-all-the-time strategy works better for me than other schemes.

Or maybe it's just that I had the Vikings to help me in this endeavor...

It seems that the few times I was at peace and didn't have at least one war going on, my citizens would get miffed and stop the WLTKD! So I would increase the happiness for a turn or two and then start another war, after which I could lower the luxury slider again. I guess my citizens were lazy and liked having all those slaves I kept bringing back to do their work. Typical.

It was amusing to have every single civ "furious" with me, and yet have no choice but to cower at *most* of my demands. Everyone except the damn Chinese. Even though terribly outmatched (my military was nearly 3-times their size) they would constantly try to sneak attack me.

Anyway, it was one of the more enjoyable GOTMs for me.

I am surprised i did as well as i did given i thought I played a poor game. I guess the fact that many of you went for a cultural 20k is what helped my ranking?

Congratulations to all the top players....and also those of you who had the guts to go for a 20k. I've never won using such a condition.

I have all saves by Assura and IMHO she has 20K victory, istead 100 K. If you can - pls test it. Why? Culture more then 100 K (aroun 120K), but in capital - 20K and message about victory.
Sorry bad English

I'm curious, why is the time played blank for everyone? I realize it would only apply to PTW, but I'm still curious.

At #89 I'm still firmly in conquest land. One of these days maybe I'll get better... but I'm having lots of fun playing these great maps, and that is the point!

How often does the Global Player Ranking get updated? I'm anxious to know if my recent GOTMs have elevated me at all.

As always, I am in 100% agreement with HotRod. I have been playing almost exclusively the QSC. I usually only have time for the QSC and was a real fan of the analysis that was done and the comparisons that could be made.

GOTM22 was my first full game submission in a while and that was only because I could shift enter the last five thousand years to get my 20K. I'm actually disappointed that I did submit because the beginning of the game felt like my best one yet. I was in a position to eliminate all the civs on my side of the world but I was forced to shift enter to complete the game on time, taking 117th position because I failed to grab all the extra territory/happy citizens that I could have.

If the QSC is no longer supported (understandable due to the effort it takes to evaluate) I will probably be dropping from the GOTM ranks entirely.:(

Sailorstick, they had updated almost immediatly in the past, however, I think the QSC results for 21 and 22 is what is slowing down the global ranking updates.

Congratulations to all players and especially to Qitai!
My own GOTM22 submission sunk in the sea of Internet:( and I lost the potential 4th place in the list.

When I saw that you scored much lower than normal, I assumed that meant you had a new girlfriend and were distracted.

So you guys still notice. I don’t really consider myself a top class player now when so many good civers showed up.

My excuse was not what cracker thought (I’m still happily married) but the fact that the game slowed significantly starting 250AD, when I had dozens of units and ships to coordinate a mass invasion of several islands in the same time. I did not feel that I had less time to play but suddenly the month ended and I just managed to gift my cities and let the Americans conquer me.

IIRC SirPleb’s 20K calculator predicted a 20K win in 1856 at the time I hit the industrial age. I’m not sure if I would have managed to cut that to 1750, which was my target date.

I expect to be back in the top 20 this month though.

Special congratilations to my old buddy GogoK for finishing his first GOTM :goodjob: and moreover, with a cultural win

Me personnaly, I haven't yet managed to finish a single GOTM, only a couple of QSCs...:o

(is it soup now ?!)

And of course, congratulations to the top scorers and to Cracker and Co for bringing us this great game.

As seems to be noted quite a bit here, many of us miss out on finishing the GOTM due to real life. QSC is / was a valued method of learning while still competing to a limited extent. With QSC 21 and QSC 22 now seemingly departed, and with so many new players, I fear that it will fade into myth, and many of us may have to leave off participating in the GOTM.

Certainly, we appreciate the GOTM staff and all that they do, but I'd like to humbly suggest that we dispense with 21 and 22, but resume the ratings with QSC, and cut our losses, rather than lose out completely due to frustration on either the moderators' or players' parts.

Thank you for listening...
