Gotm22-Vikings PreGame Discussion

What happens if there is a barbarian camp near the mountain (N -> NW) and it kills the scout that everyone is going to send to the mountain as their first move??

That would be a killer.

I'm still thinking on what I'm gonna do. But probably I'll do 40-turn research (GLb, Lighthouse and some galleys), Ancient Age wonders and pray for huts in my island, which may be bigger than expected.

I'll bet in caravel-berserk conquest, but also going for 20k victory if the wars prove to be slow and tough. I'll try lighthouse and Magellan. Pyramids don't seem to be a very useful wonder in this game. Happiness wonders also would help from Sistine Chapel onwards.

The reason why the links aren't published up front is so that players will take the steps necessary so that they can successfully play their game before having access to the saves. - Aeson

For those unused to the tactical details of the scandavian special units, there is something critical to keep in mind when attempting caravel-berserk conquest.

When the ship has creaked and rolled and lumbered into position, and the men are up on the gunwales and ready to charge, and your hand is poised over the key to give the final order, you must always, always, remember to lunge forward, adopt the fiercest, most bloodthirsty expressions of which your physiognomy is capable, and scream BERSERKKKK! at full volume as your finger hits the button. This will ensure success.

bug 1:

That is probably not the best way of getting the game out to the other players. Cracker sets up the download so that you have to have the add-on files before you get the game. At the end of the add-on install you are directed to select the game you want to play. By posting the games the way you have, some players are going to get the game without the files that are necessary to play the game.

May I suggest that you edit your post to delete the links to the zip files.

Opps, already edited by Aeson.

I just reinstalled Civ III (Mac OS X) and reinstalled all the files from Gotm16 on but I got the following messages when I went to start playing:

Load Error
Not A Valid save Game
"Macintosh HD\Users\boydpype\desktop\civilzation III\gotm22 start v129 open.sav"

I think the problem may be with my loading of the resources from Gotm 20 and 21.

Gotm20 was simple, but with 21 which resources (there were extras it appeared) do I use and which ones for 22?

Help!

Do I need to reinstall all the add-ons?

Oh my GAWD!

:rotfl:

Puzzlinon, rest assured that I *will* do that.
Then, of course, you too will be able to hear my neighbours screaming while they attack my fortified bedroom... :D

Skol. skol, skol, skol, skol, skol...

Just getting in the mood. One final note - I think it's a given that iron will be close to the start territory (has been for all the Gotms) I've played. The point about getting Iron Working early is that you can work out how best to use your swordsman - and it saves linking up the iron too early (and maybe having it exhaust before you've built anything with it!).

Oh well, I'm going a Viking now - Good luck folks!

To get back at an earlier discussion, IMHO it is to the player himself if he wants to play at Conquest or Open class.

As some players point out they have ('terrible') difficulties at playing at higher levels, so they rather play Conquest, although they have already won games and finished at the higher 50% of the total scoring (or are 'afraid' they might have last month).

The player themselves has to think about if it is worth to try the extra challenge of the Open class with the chance of losing quickly or get the extra bonuses of the Conquest class with the chance of having not much of a challenge.

Off course Cracker always has some nice tricks (or so I have heard only having played GOTM 21 :D). And he will most surely have made the game in a way that it will be doable for most of the players, either at Open or Conquest class and even at Predator.

The only way to find out if you made the right choice at the class is by playing the game. I think only when you are codnfident AND have qon a game in the upper 50% play Open. If you have finished more then once in the upper 50% or in the top 25% then I think you should be confident enough. :p

Hey all,

With a spaceship launch I am proud of in GOTM 21 OPEN ptw 1.21(monarch is still a challenge for me, thoughrecent SG's have helped significantly), I will sign my life away to a OPEN PTW 1.21 again.

I will say right now that I really don't see it happening, but I will try for the 20K win, with back plans of conquest. HTat being said, I have never won at emperor, so I don't foresee a win coming up, though I will plan and play for one.

Having read the thread, I will make the assumption that we will meet at least 1 other civ on the island. I can't see cracker making us military, expansionist, then nixing both of our abilities, while making it a 20K game (which we aren't suited for) for TOurnament. Of course, if I guess correctly at Cracker's machination's, then I' better go and play the lotto as well *grin*

With the number of units, I think I will try West first, probably the scout, then go south to the Mt with the 1 move warrior. After that, if it looks bleak, the worker goes east, and then I decide on capital, tho I strongly suspect I'll be moving.

CB first, and then, if it's an island, probably head for MM. otherwise, I might try for Bronze. I fear trying to get Wonder's against AI at this lelev, but we'll just have to see ...

Wish us luck, as I do all of you.

After having failed miserably as the head of the Greeks in GOTM#21, there I was hoping to do better in the next GOTM.

Lo and behold, it's the Vikings (which I'm not familiar playing as), it's 66% water and an archipelago (which I'm not familiar playing on) and a target of a 20k victory (at which I've never achieved).

Oh my God! This should be an interesting GOTM.

(OK, that's my excuses out of the way)

I'm now gonna download the last of the files and kick some butt!! (you gotta be confident! Right?)

I also wish you all luck!

(how can we ever tire of playing the game when Cracker and the team make 'em so interesting?)

This is my first GOTM, and I've noticed that it ran extremely slow on my computer. I tried a random map and some of my scenarios and they ran fine. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it normal for GOTM scenarios to run slower than regular games?

Yes, they usually run slower because of all the "goodies" cracker and co. put in the game. The longer you play this month's game the faster it gets, unlike last month's game.

Yes, sometimes at the beginning, and then it speeds up.
