GOTM 62 - first spoiler

Spoiler 1 for GOTM62 - Germany, is now open! How did your Germans do? Did they find themselves short on Lebensraum early on? :) Rather cramped island, but I'm sure the AI doesn't have a chance ... right?

Reading Requirements:

  1. Must be able to research a Middle Ages Technology.

Posting restrictions

  1. No maps showing resources from middle-ages (or later).
  2. No discussion of middle-ages (or later).
  3. Please be discreet with any map images; I suspect there will be varying amounts and types of contacts. Feel free to mention any contacts or negotiations that you performed.

Predator - going for conquest

Pretty slow start. Worker moved to BG and saw other BGs.
So settler move to south to make more space will not cost much. Settler sees whale and moves another tile to get it for the commerce.
Build warrior-granary-settler. Research pottery.
Soon we know we are alone on a small island so the research goal is set.

Cities:
3900BC Berlin
2630BC Leipzig immediately started Colossus as GLight prebuild
2230BC Hamburg
1790BC Konigsberg
1600BC Frankfurt

"Empire" at 1000BC:
klarius_g62_0.jpg

And that's it for the home island and the QSC. There would have been space to squeeze in 2 more towns, but initially I didn't want to increase corruption in Leipzig, later (after aqueducts) we will anyway work all land tiles.
GLight completed 1050 BC so now we are in business for contacts.
I settled a few more cities in the following to grab resources and populate a few islands, but nothing to write home about.

875BC meet Spain
825BC meet Russians
800BC meet Carthage
750BC meet French and buy contact with England. First phony war with French and alliance with England. This netted us war happiness from England and a village from France by 430BC.
30BC we start the first real war with Carthage and captured Theveste 10BC.

Science:
3250BC pottery
2430BC alphabet
1700BC writing
1275BC MM
800BC literature researched; trade masonry, TW, WC, CB, IW
630BC mathematics researched; trade mysticism, HBR
510BC philosophy researched; trade CoL
170BC republic researched - 4 turns anarchy
50BC trade currency.
10AD polytheism researched; trade construction -> MA

Predator class, going for the
cow.gif
.

Settled on the spot, research to Pottery at maximum. Worker roads and mines 2 BG. Build 1 warrior, then a granary (using Colossus as prebuild), settler, warrior, warrior, settler (chopped).

I built my whopping 3 other cities at RCP 3 and started the Colossus (prebuild for Great Lighthouse) in the capital.

1275 completed Map Making and flipped to the Great Lighthouse, start Literature at minimum.

1025 meet Carthage when I ran into their galley, but they lack Map Making . I sell them Map Making for contact with the French, their territory map, and 20 gold. I pick up France’s territory map and 10 gold for Pottery, then Iron Working, Ceremonial Burial, their World Map and 7 gold for Map Making.

“Q”SC:

5 towns
22 citizens
7 workers
8 warriors
5 galleys

1000 BC - complete the Great Lighthouse.

925 BC - Introduce myself to the English. Sell Liz Map Making and contact with Cathage for the Wheel, Warrior Code, a World Map, and 58 gold.

900 BC - Declare on France. Renegotiate peace with England with a military alliance vs. France.

690 BC – Meet Russia. Pick up their World Map and Horseback Riding for Iron Working.

670 BC – Meet Spain. Send Map Making to Russia for Mysticism, Masonry, and 34 gold. Get Spain’s World Map and 47 gold for Masonry.

570 BC – England and France sign peace so England declares on me giving me much needed happiness.

550 BC – France gives me Mathematics for peace.

510 BC – Carthage refuses to give me Philosophy, so I declare.

270 BC – Carthage down to nothing but size 1 towns without culture so I sign peace for Philosophy, 35 gold, and an alliance against the English.

Spain and Russia still don’t know each other, so I introduce them and force them to fight each other for my entertainment.

300 AD – Finally buy Republic.

320 AD – France eliminated, and I get a Great Leader who builds the Forbidden Palace on the Franco-English island.

340 AD – England gone.

370 AD – Complete Polytheism and enter the Middle Ages, drawing Feudalism – Russia gets Monotheism.

1025 meet Carthage when I ran into their galley, but they lack Map Making .

They started with that thing. Not sure why. It was renamed "Elephant Transport". We'll have to ask civ_steve what the thinking was... or was it a free unit left over from some time we played Carthage? Anyway, it certainly didn't help them meet us any/much earlier did it? Early contact with some other civ perhaps...

:) Being a Regent level AI, I felt sorry for them and their starting position! I felt they needed a little help so I gave them a starting Galley.

Predator, Conquest

Settled in place after moving Worker east to Bonus Grassland. Worker
roaded and mined and then chopped the Game Forest. It went on to road
this tile and four more before mining any more. Berlin built a Warrior
(3800 BC) and then used The Colossus as pre-build for a Granary (3100
BC). Research path Pottery - Alphabet - Writing - Map Making. Like
Klarius I immediately started building The Great Lighthouse in Leipzig
using The Colossus as pre-build.

Quick Start Challenge Results:

5 Cities
23 Citizens
3 Contacts
4 Workers
3 Galleys
9 Warriors

Iron Working, Literature and Map Making, researching Code of Laws

No resources

QSC Score: 2009

The cities on the home island are in RCP3. All land tiles plus the
Whale tile and one more Coast tile are worked when the cities all
reach size six. Two of the cities then produce 10 shields per turn
net.

1150 BC 74 Found Frankfurt /Delta/

I soon met with Carthage, France and England, which I allied against
France. In the peace deal I won two cities from France, but the
Hundred-year War on Beta continent raged still when I entered the
Middle Ages many years later. Perhaps only the advent of Longbows will
settle that conflict? My lighthouse-powered Galleys eventually
discovered Spain and Russia and counting the three luxuries there my
first invasion target was set. The first real war started in 310 BC
against Russia. The Russian wars were fought with Swordsmen only.

1125 BC 75 Meet France
1125 BC 75 Meet England
1125 BC 75 Meet Carthage
1125 BC 75 War France
1125 BC 75 Embassy England
1125 BC 75 Right of Passage England
1125 BC 75 Alliance England vs. France
925 BC 83 Peace France

310 BC 112 War Russia
190 BC 118 Peace Russia
190 BC 118 War Russia
50 BC 125 Peace Russia for gold, rush Harbor for luxuries
30 AD 129 War Russia

Research went to The Republic over Map Making and Literature and was
then turned off. I could trade for Mathematics without a monopoly
through arbitration between the AI tribes. The Great Library, captured
from Russia, gave me Currency and at the same time I popped
Construction from a hut! So the Middle Ages were reached in 90
AD.

I've had a lot of luck in this game. Not only did Russia build me the
Great Library and a primitive tribe teach me Construction, I also got
a Great Military Leader on the second or third attempt, with which I
could rush a Forbidden Palace in the middle of the juicy northern part
of Alpha continent. My economy is getting into gear.

1050 BC 78 Build The Great Lighthouse
530 BC 101 Establish Anarchy
470 BC 104 Establish Republic
170 BC 119 Emerge Military Great Leader Barbarossa
70 AD 131 Build Forbidden Palace
90 AD 132 Enter Middle Ages

Some mistakes:

Roading the Forest close to Berlin too late. I should know that it was
going to be worked every turn with 4 fpt surplus and a Granary.

Building too many Warriors for upgrade. I had no money for it and had
to disband all Regulars. Veterans were waiting for upgrade for ages.
