GOTM 90 - first spoiler, the Ancient Age

Reading Requirements:

  1. Must have contact with all AI civs remaining on your continent.
  2. Must be able to research a Middle Ages Technology.

Posting restrictions

  1. Feel free to discuss distant contacts and trades, but be discreet about locations or directions of any AI.
  2. No discussion of middle-ages (or later) including resource locations.
  3. AS ALWAYS, do not post Spoiler information for ANY other 'X'OTM contest.

The starting location is decent, but no immediate fresh water; what did you think about the area beyond the starting location, and where did you ultimately place your capital? Anything interesting about the AI contacts? Any problems you foresee, and any issues overcoming them? (This is Warlords after all!)

Near the Middle Ages something weird happens.

I want to drive Iroquois furious by making unreasonable demands. (This will increase the chance that they declare war when I ask them to leave our territory.) So I demand the core town of Tonawanda. Imagine my surprise when they actually give it to us.

This opens up new perspectives for me on morals in Civ3. If I should attack after this concession from the Iroquois I would absolutely behave less humanely and less human(!) than this AI, completely ignoring his human appeal for compassion. Arguably, declaring war after this will be even more inhuman than when you sign for peace to gain a few towns and then redeclare war right away, because when you do that it
can always be argued that the enemy leader is accepting peace because he is a panicky coward who will say yes to anything, then quickly sneak out the palace backdoor, supplant himself with a dopfelgänger and move to South America with what was left in the state coffers. This is not the case with the sober, upright attempt to protect yourself and your people from a ravenous neighbour: "We will agree to your demands for the moment - but don't push us too far..."

What did I do? Moved my horsemen a bit closer to Tonawanda before declaring making the Iroquois declare the next turn, to lessen the risk of losing the gift to some archer. Here's a picture of me (right) and the Iroquois: :assimilate:

Not a bug. I do this very often on lower levels. When AI feels meagre and doesn't value it's towns that much you can get few towns by doing this.

I think yes. I remember in Regent Aztec COTM got 5-7 towns this way in early MA when I had around 10 horsemen built.

Open, 20K

Well, I kept lousy notes.

I settled in place and hoped to find a decent 20K spot. I went 4 NE, which had the river, hills, and mountains, but a lot of jungle. Things seemed to take forever, and not much got built during the AA. The iron showing up in Veii was nice, though.
