Yesterday i started a new scenario "Mesopotamia" after finishing the victory over the european invaders in the scenario about the new world. As i looked up the tech tree i am still not sure which gov. is the better choice and would like to get your input on it. What do you think does it better: Oligarchy or Monarchy? (As i think Tribal Council is no option at all!)

I am playing as Egypt on Regent level.

I've only played that scenario as Egypt so far. My first priority was irrigation, then I shoot for a better government as fast as possible.
Monarchy comes to late, its in the next age. So the choice is really only between Oligarchy and Tribal Council. I went for Oligarchy myself, more commerce meant faster research.
The big problem with Oligarchy is that it has no rush method. So the only thing you can spend that commerce on is research.

Tribal Council is not really an option, it´s nearly the same to despotism. I now have the choice between oligarchy and monarchy, because i waited that long, and monarchy will become avaible in a few turns.

I am just not sure about the big topic corruption, because in the description of the govs Monarchy seems to have heavy corruption, and Oligarchy not. What is your expierence with corruption under Oligarchy?

P.S.: I went for Mining first! ;)

Corruption under Oligarchy made a big difference with Despotism. It made my core a lot bigger. I could use the entire Nile region, from the Mediterranean sea to the edge of the map. And the same distance in the width. (using CxxC placement) I placed my capital on the spot where the middle of the 3 starting settlers started.

I don't know how it compares with Monarchy, because I haven't used that yet.

I settled the southern settler in place as well, the northern stepped one tile to the north. In the Nile Region i use CxxC as well.

You wrote it made your core bigger, from the Mediterranean sea to the edge of the map. Do you mean north/south oder east/west? I founded three towns in the area west of the nile, and under despotism these towns are highly corrupt. It would be real cool if these towns are getting somehow productive, because it´s good ground there and there is much more room!

I also founded my second town on the eastern coast (Red Sea), these are not that corrupt, and I cleaned Sinea from Phoenicia to claim the two luxes.

Tribal Council: same tile penalty as despotism, ergo not worth the anarchy
Oligarchy: can't rush, and Monarchy is almost in your grasp. But no tile penalty, at least.
Monarchy: Worth waiting for in this scenario.
Republic: You'll probably have won before you can even get this researched. Never touched it in this scenario, myself.

I'd only bother with Oligarchy as Medes and Babylon, the religious civs in this scenario. And then only briefly, until Monarchy is researched. Just like in the regular game, you want to switch governments as few times as possible.

Thx for your input! :)

I decided to switch to monarchy, because i had some gold and expected a big treasure in the future. And what shall i say, my expectations became true! ;) My treasury grew and grew and grew, and then as the Golden Age started it became even better! Easy victory as i build the last great wonder in a few turns!

I agree to you that Republic is not reachable before winning (or loosing) the scenario!
