Every fourth turn -- therefore <revolt> the turn before for best results.

If you revolt one turn before, your cities are unhappy for all one turn (the'oedo' turn).
The best revolt is 'instant revolution', where unhappiness of some or of all cities in oedo turn may be cleared. For more info search for 'instant revolution'in the Great Library Index.

I don't like the anarchy between turns, but I cannot be bothered to look up the date. I just revolt when I'm good and ready. It is nice knowing that anarchy won't last forever.

It is nice to know that Anarchy won't last forever.... I used to have a theory (a while ago) that your government wouldnt pull out of the chaos until each of your cities was no longer in civil disorder.

BTW - Maybe it would be nice if anarchy could last forever because taking a fleet of spies and destroying all of some other Democracy's Cathedrals and Colosseums would be a nifty strategy

I use Despotism -> Monarchy -> Communism -> Fundamentalism and it works rather well.
