Great Artists

Interesting information about the changes to culture bombs through the expansions, thanks. One question, I think I have only been on the receiving end of a culture bomb one time, it really shocked me to be honest. What are your experiences with the AI in this regard? Do they ever bomb you?
Yes, I've often had the AI culture bomb me. I usually regard it as tantamount to a declaration of war. Then again, I usually don't need much of an excuse for a DoW. Most days I can give Monty a run for his money.

I've been bombed, repeatedly! My home is in tatters!... er wut

I suck at war, so after taking a major city and a capital I was forced to settle for a ceasefire without completing my conquest. In the interim the rival nation culture bombed an area near the cities I had taken, engulfing the tiles in rival culture and starving their former capital. Very clever indeed. :(

I often get bombed at, though the sites the AI bomb are often getting culturally crushed by me (to the point where I have culture blocking them in. Solution: Cancel open borders when the GA is approaching.

yeah, the ai is a bit misinformed about culture bombs. They think that if they are getting pressed, then they should culture bomb to help their borders... but as we've discussed here, settling the artists would help their borders much more.

Since that strategy would have worked in vanilla, I betcha the programmers forgot to change that part of the AI code when they decided to nerf the culture bomb.

In the situation I described, where eons of culture have accumulated and your city is a fresh capture, bombing is the right choice for the AI.

The +12:culture: from settling doesn't help for late game cultural borders, when tiles already have thousands of foreign culture embedded within them. At most, that settled GA gives you 3 free artist specialists, which will gradually give you control over your inner 2 rings.

Early bombs are great to push out borders over weak or empty enemy culture, early settles are great to gradually push when you're both evenly matched. Late game, GA bombs should be used to take control of your inner 2 rings, hopefully that gives you the food resources you need to build the culture buildings and hire the artists to really push back enemy borders.

Ultimately, the right choice is to push your war machine forward and take the rest of their empire so all their culture belongs to you.

The key with using culture to harass is to steal their food resources. Who cares if a city's missing half its BFC and the foreign borders are touching the city, it's not going to work them anyway. As long as they have some food, they have population and production that can hang on and make it a colossal pain to culture flip the city. I've culture pressed a foreign city with 2 creative cities for hundreds of turns, the city tile was up to 60% my culture, and it still wouldn't revolt because its rice tile was out of reach. I eventually gave and just took the damn thing when my rifles went online.

Just had a game last night that exemplifies what can be done with a culture bomb. I play BtS 3.19 where the culture bomb is reduced from what it had been in earlier patches. Even so, here is what happened; Settled two new cities, and allowed 20 or so turns to pass. A GA popped and, a few turns later, Music tech, so another popped up. Culture bombed both cities with the GAs. The effect on both borders was phenomenal. The resultant border pop extended WAY out past the BFCs of both cities, out to a 3, and in some cases, a 4 tile radius. In this way, several relatively distant resources were suddenly within my cultural borders. Rushed workers to the sites, built the mines/camps/plantations rapidly, and now had a number of valuable additions to the trade list, enabling some new trades which immediately provided health and happy bonuses. In addition to the resource and trade enhancements, these greatly extended borders effectively prevented any AIs from slipping in and settling in places I deemed undesirable.

Love this game.

In a city with little culture, a culture bomb is actually better to gain tiles. It will take a long time for the settled artist to overtake a culture bomb.

A second ring tile will get 760 culture from the bomb, and after the bomb it will get another 40 culture/turn. (because a city with 500-4999 culture will get an extra 60 culture on the first ring tile, 40 on the second ring, and 20 on the third ring)

If you settle an artist this tile will get nothing for one turm, 12 culture for 8 turns, 32 culture for 33 turns.
So after 42 turns, the bomb city tile has 2440 culture, and the settled artist city tile has 1152 culture, so it is behind by 1248. It will now catch up with 12 culture/turn, so this will take another 103 turns.
The settled artist will catch up faster if there are other sources of culture, but the bomb city will probably reach 5000 culture first, and then it will produce more tile culture again, until the settled artist city catches up.

i used 2 GA to bomb a city near ai's territory with the objective of steal 3 gold tile in mine external Fat cross...nothing appened...i usually prefer to use spy with "spread culture" mission and "sabotage" to whip out their happyness or food resources whne the time as come...it's working good for me

I had the same experience when I first started playing BTS. I was just trying to take some tiles from a reasonably old tiny AI city that had virtually no cultural output at all (3:culture:). Shocked, I promptly WBed myself a bunch of GAs, but it took five for anything to happen, and even then, it was very strange and not the desired effect. Gave up on bombs after that.

That seems to be a good use of a culture bomb. It doesn't help that much to steal tiles from established cities but it gives a tremendous boost to outlying areas the AI hasn't built up yet.
