How has the great person mechanic changed in BNW? IIRC, Gods and Kings/Vanilla worked like this: you ran specialists or built wonders, got the GPP, and when you got to 100, you got a GP of that specified type, and then, the next GP requires 200 points], and it all continued from there. And, I'm pretty sure the costs of ALL great persons (well, prophets, generals, and admirals are different, so ignoring those) went up, so I remember sometimes having to prevent merchants from popping in favor of scientists, especially when going for a science victory. This pretty much prevents the Mayans from ever producing natural GP, since their UA increases Great Person costs.

Well, what's different for Brave New world? Whenever an artist or other cultural person appears, I don't notice the costs of any other great person increasing. Have they changed the way this works? Does this mean the Mayans now have a chance to create natural great persons? And, when you get "free" Great Persons, is it still like before, where some of them still increase the cost of natural great persons? Like, the Globe Theatre: does the free great writer increase the cost of the next one?

Also looking for answers to this after having noticed this in Maddjinn's LP Venice game where he popped a Great Writer then a couple of turns later a Great Merchant (while still in the early game). It appears some great people have a separate gpp cost?

How it works is that Great Writers, Great Artists and Great Musicians all have their own counter which is only incremented by getting one of that type.

The rest of the great people share a counter.

Well, most gps do have their own counter, such as GS counter, GE counter and GM counter, etc. etc. When each of these counters fill up completely, the GP is born and the counter is restarted for the next GP of the same category. There are individual counters for each different GP.

By "counter" I meant the limit that had to be reached.

Nope, Great Merchants, Scientists and Engineers still share the same counter. So if you get a Great Merchant, the price for Merchants, Scientists and Engineers will go up. This isn't true for Writers, Artists and Musicians (spawning one of these increases the cost of only the spawned type of GP) or Prophets, Admirals and Generals who follow their own spawning rules.

An odd thing I noticed is that writers and musicians do not get +1 :c5production: from the statue of liberty. Are they just lazy compared to artists or is that an oversight?

Probably an oversight if artists get that +1. It's hard to tell what is intentional and what is not, with Civ V's documentation being the way it is - terrible.
