Great Person free tech issue?

Twice yesterday I tried the "Discover new tech option" after producing a Great Person. I just wanted to try it out. It did not give me the tech in either case.

I've also been getting quite a few crashes to blank screen that requires a hard reset.

The leaders don't give you a "full tech" all the time. In the later game the help you to discover new techs by giving you X exp in Xtech. So you have discoverd already half of the tech for example.

if you read the toolbox it will tell you exactly how many science points you will get from using the Great Person. Not always (I'd say never in the late stages) these are enough for the completion of the research.
