Greece confirmed - one spot left for a civ

Considering that most of the other civs span several hundreds if not thousands of years into the past, I still don't see why the American civilization has to be in every version of Civilization - apart from the obvious influence on the game's market. The Americans have been on their continent for only a few hundred years and before that they were Europeans, well, or Africans, Asians, etc.

I always rationalized that, well, the American civilization must include the Native Americans too, but when the first Native American civ appeared in Civ that logic went through the window...

Sure, USA is the only superpower (until the Chinese and the Indians get their economy together at least) at the moment, but considering how ancient some of these civilizations are, a few hundred years of independence and a few decades of hegemony doesn't really create a "civ" in my eyes.

Mind you, I'm not anti-American or anything, but to me the Americans stand out like a cyborg in the midst of an army of spearmen. That's how I've always felt since Civ I, and I apologize if I upset anybody with my views.

Ok, I think it's time for me to duck from all the incinerators, because I can hear the flames a-brewing.

The Americans are just as worthy as other Civs. Just because they are modern doesn't mean they should get left out.

No, please, don't misunderstand me. I didn't mean they are not worthy, I just mean that they stick out a bit from the "basic" civs so to speak (i.e. not expansion civs). And the fact remains that there are many civilizations both in the game and left out of it, and they're all worthy to be included.

Hmm, I'm not entirely sure it was wise to write that post because it can be misinterpreted in so many ways. I'd remove it if I could but now that you've quoted it, it's no longer possible. :)

i think america's youth as a nation only adds to its legitimacy in civ games. many of the most famous empires in history are the ones that became powerful quickly.

In my mind the Americans are one of the top dozen or so "must be included" civs, because of their overwhelming worldwide influence over the last century.
In the setting of a separate continent, American society developed into something quite different than the European societ(ies) that spawned America. This uniqueness is an important part of why America is very worthy of being included.
And is it any stranger to have America thriving in 3000 BC in a game than it is to have the Egyptians or an ancient Mesopotamian Civ thriving in 2020?

Maybe we get Canada?

Yes Canada. We never got an empire but we don't care, we deserve a civ, we invented many things and we got so much influence and we're the second biggest country in tha world and everybody love us except maybe Afghans — but who cares they never got a civ and don't get broken thanks and subs like we do. And we got Bryan Adams.

i'd make sure to raze every single canadian city every single game if they ever became a separate civ, even to the point of using the world builder to build extra canadian cities to raze.

well, yeah, in the real world, but as neil patrick harris's character barney stinson from the show how i met your mother once said, "You poor thing. Having to grow up in Canada, with America right there."

Oh no, they've got it all wrong!

The US is cheap entertainment. It's like all genres rolled into one - comedy, horror, spoof, and even a bit of archaic period drama (mostly 1980s, but you can't look a gift horse in the mouth, I always say).

There is nothing quite like standing in nice, clean, safe Windsor, preferably somewhere around the draft dodger memorial or the underground railroad plaque, and looking across the river at the rotting, festering heart of long-suffering Detroit through the coin-operated binoculars installed all along the waterfront. Best 25 cent horror show ever. Touch of The Warriors, bit of The Hills Have Eyes, and even a dash of Deliverance, on a good day.

Good and bracing, like a stiff drink. Briefly painful, but then you feel all warm and tingly, knowing that you're here, not there.

I for one am quite happy with a little mix-up of the starting civs. I would love it if a dark horse candidate “won” inclusion – like the Native Americans or Polynesians. If it was always the same list of “deserving” civs it would be boring.

If the 'Native Americans' are in I am going to eat someone.

If it's really a question of marketing the game, I'd think a Korean civ (Goryeo) might be a good choice.

What about the Almoravids or other "Moorish" civs instead of Spain?

I am a couple of Civs behind, so I don't know if these have been included in expansion packs before.

How amusing to watch over our little colonies in their quarrels.

It's a joke.

Detroit might not be the best example...

Well, that's the front door, the main gate, the visible facade of the US, from a Canadian perspective. Most travelled crossing. There are lots of others, but none as travelled, and they are all rural. Nowhere else you can stand on the border and look at the downtown of a major American city.

As a neutral third party I have this to say: Canada is awesome. USA less so.
